I thoroughly work in saddle soap good and deep into my new leather. Then use a good old fashioned leather dressing. Let that dry, then soak the leather in water till very pliable. After a good soak, I fit the tack to the horse and go to work. After work, I re-soap and re-dress the leather. I repeat as needed for fitment.
Bill is not only cute and a good sport, he's a saint! Such a patient gentleman. I had to chuckle at Baron's trouble hitching up! He seemed to be trying so hard but not quite getting what Jim wanted. I guess that since he's only three there's still a bit of baby brain going on there, but I'm sure he'll catch on pretty quick! Jim seems to be a gentle and patient trainer, and I love how he warmed the bit in his hand before putting it in his mouth. That's just a kind thing to do on such a cold day.

Thank you for the explanations about the new collar and harness and adjusting it all. Boy, Baron has a lot of get up and go!!! I know nothing about all this but didn’t know if you could put the cart/shaves parallel with the truck body that you tie him to. That way you would have a wall, and then move him over to step over the shaves. And have him just stand there. Then slowly as time progresses, and Baron gains confidence; start moving the cart/shaves away from the “wall.” Of course I understand that I’ve no idea how wide the cart is in comparison to the truck body; but he is used to the walls of his stall, and that wall might help you some-it may not too! IDK!!! Baron is a beautiful Stallion. And your patience with him is wonderful to behold! God Bless

I have an idea how you could go about teaching Baron to walk into the shackles. Place the cart along the side of the trailer so Baron can't go over on that side. Turn the cart in different directions so that he learns to enter from both sides. When he gets the hang of it, angle the cart out more and more so that it will eventually be at an angle to the trailer. It is so exciting to follow Barons training and I am convinced he's gonna be a wonderful working horse.
He is doing really well🙌🏼, impressed how he is progressing👏He understands your words! Because I don’t hitch my boy up that much, he too steps outside or over the sheaves. He is getting better. Right now I have my cutter parked parellel to the fence, I walk him over the sheaves and position him so he backs in between them so If he steps outside the sheaves, I take him out and get him to do a few quick circles. He is realizing it is better to stand. He doesn’t like doing circles! Once he is standing, I tie him to the post. You might have more control over maneuvering him and lifting the sheaves by backing him in. I had to slow it right down. Slow,short, baby steps backwards. All the best. I tell you, that Baron is getting to be a big boy!❤ I would never have guessed he's longer body length than Billy Boy! Oh how beautiful he is! I dearly love how he has kind of slanted eyes, just beautiful🥰 Bless his heart, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. I see that he's really trying to do right. It isn't that he's just being stubborn. I think he just gets confused and hasn't quite "got it" yet on hitching, etc. I'm SO proud of how gently you work with him instead of how some people might get ill with him. And you also are so good to know when enough is enough rather than letting him get worried. Thank you for always being so kind and gentle with all of your horses.👌 On a different note, I've heard NY and New England areas would be getting ice and then heavy snow. Hope you guys all fair well in the coming winter storm. Down south, we are getting heavy rain, hail, strong wind, and tornadoes with storms moving across the lower 48 today. I'm right there with ya on warming the bit. I used to unzip my coat and get as close to sticking in my armpit as I could, depending on the bridle. Its easy with a saddle horse bridle, not so much with blinders. If the blinders are floppy enough, you can fold the bridle closed and still get the bit in there. My husband's uncle actually rode for Winston Churchill. You know, driving in this low light at this time of year, it might be worth it to get some reflective material and/or a bicycle light on that rig. It may be just the camera, but you are really hard to see along that tree line. I know you have a lot of Amish in the area, and folks are probably used to watching for horses, but still. A cheap battery powered bike light would make you much more visible. I used to wear one when I walked on the road at night, and it would really stop traffic. Those reflective stickers they put on semi trailers down the sides are really good too. He is getting really good at crossing his feet when he turns, without tripping himself. That is difficult for any horse. He is really smart. He's doing really great at backing too. I always hooked a cart that way, but my carts were a fair bit lighter. Most of the ones I've used were wooden with wooden wheels, one was metal with motorcycle wheels. Pretty much all of them could be pulled with one hand. For the uninitiated, I always hitched and unhitched in the same order too. The most basic, stripped-down racing harnesses sometimes only have shaft tugs. With a light enough vehicle, the horse can still pull, stop, and turn with nothing but shaft tugs and a tight false girth figure-eighted around those tugs. As long as those are still hooked, the horse still has control of the cart. This is crucially important if something goes wrong and the horse gets away from you. Take away the ability to pull first, it is least needed. Take away the holdbacks next, you don't want a horse dragging a cart by a holdback, particularly if there is a shaft dragging on the ground. Take away the shaft tugs last. Jim, I don't think Baron is being belligerent. He has tried so hard to figure things out and be obedient right from the beginning and he is clearly a very smart youngster. That said, he does seem to blow a circuit breaker when there is too much input at once. My best guess about what is going on is that he has gotten used to stepping over one pole with Kenny there to show him where to stand. Give him two poles and no Kenny and he has no clue what you want. He doesn't know whether he is supposed to step over both and get on the left side, where he is used to being, or stay on the right side, where Kenny usually is. The middle isn't even occuring to him. Even though you are putting him in the middle and working him there, he isn't getting the concept of stepping into the middle. One option might be to take Kenny along and tie him on the right side, to keep Baron from stepping back and forth. That eliminates one of the three possibilities, and once you make it clear that left isn't where you want him either, then middle might occur to him. Once he's hitched, you could put Kenny back in the barn, or let him stand there until you come back, if he isn't bad about standing alone. You could also maybe put a gate, or a gate with a piece of plywood on it to keep the shafts from getting hung in it, on one side of the shafts so he can't just step through. Using a corner of the barn as a place to hitch might be another option. A stack of hay bales would probably work. Something needs to be there to keep him from just swinging from one side to the other and back. Also, it doesn't seem like Baron is real comfortable with having that many poles under foot on the ground where he can't see them. It might not be possible for you to do this, as Baron is a pretty big colt, but when I started mine I always started them in an open bridle. I didn't want to have a situation happen in the future where a bridle broke or came off, and the horse saw the cart behind them for the first time. Breaking them in an open bridle means they can see all that stuff on the ground, and it is easier to figure out where to put their feet. But also, he is going to need to be comfortable with poles on the ground in the woods. Maybe it might help to take him out in the woods in a halter or open bridle, and let him practice getting through downed saplings, etc. Many people use cavaletti poles for something like this with a saddle horse or driving horse, but that is only because they have the money to buy such a thing. Getting out in the woods would serve the purpose.
@@sueupham2519 I think Jim is teaching all the horses to understand that "no" means the job is done, and on this whoa, don't stand ready to start again. No word works on any horse until you take the time and repetition to teach it to him.

Counter weight the back of the buggy so it just stands on it own. Walk him in for now until he gets really comfortable with those shafts. Then work some more on walking in with them down. I'm like you, the trouble will get worse if you push it.
Suffolks have a different conformation to Belgians thats why the harness sits differently. Does a brand new collar chafe the horse at all until it settles to shape. ? My grandad used to prop the shafts up on oil drums and back his horses in .
The snow starts making that crunchy sound at 5 degrees Fahrenheit. This might be a reason why his ears were facing backward and stress. Also, frost on the face hair is a learning experience.

As new teamsters, we are getting a lot of different viewpoints and advice. This channel is one of our most important training resources. Jim, today's video showed what a master teamster you really are. Your patience and commitment to both expecting Baron to perform but also allowing him space to learn is inspiring to us. Despite the challenges with hitching up, you appear to have had a great driving session with him. This tells me his respect and trust for you is well established and although Baron may be unsure about certain tasks/requests, the challenge/frustration doesn't phase him for later tasks. It's a testament to both the quality of the horse and the quality of the teamster!
Hope people are understanding how dangerous working these strong horses could be and how repetition, patience are the only way to get the good working horses Jim has👍
Here's what I would do if he was a saddle horse, as that has been what I have been working with over the years. I'd try to isolate the reason for Baron being antsy at the shafts. Is it the shafts themselves or the fact that he's away from the other horses. First I'd tie another horse next to the shafts so that Baron has some company when being hitched. If that worked I'd keep the other horse in place until such time as Baron gets more comfortable with the hitching process. If it seems to be the shafts themselves that are the issue, I would treat the problem the same as I would with a horse that doesn't want to cross water, a bridge or get in a trailer. I'd drive or lead him back and forth over them, maybe pausing when he had his front feet in the right place and again when his rear feet are in place, maybe even backing him out. I'm not even sure that when he was properly positioned for the first time or two, I would even try to lift he shafts up into place. My goal would be to make standing between the shafts the most comfortable place he could be. But you're an old horseman from way back (and a good one), you'll figure it out.

I'm not surprised that Bills collar is rather tight on Baron. The one thing that stood out to me, when Baron first came on the scene, was the size of his neck. Stallions generally have larger necks anyway, but especially, draft horses. Baron did great, once you got him hitched up.

Baron is coming along really nicely and it is fun to watch you work with him. I bought my first horse at age 57 and needed him to stand absolutely still while I mounted. Of course he did exactly what Baron was doing, stepping away. A trainer helped me solve that in only a couple of lessons. I would get up on the mounting block and Danny would move away so the trainer had me get off the block, hold the reins in my left hand and push Danny away from me, the same direction that he had stepped away. I would push him in a circle around a few times, then line him up at the mounting block. If he stepped away, I would repeat. Pretty soon (3 or 4 times) he got the idea. It is less work to stand than to step away. In your case you would unclip him from the trailer and push him far enough away from the trailer so you can circle without hitting the cart or trailer. If Brenda was helping you could hitch away from the trailer so you had more room to circle him. The same trick worked with my next horse, a 7 year old Arab. Baron is smart, he will pick it up quickly. Thanks for sharing your adventures on your farm!

I noticed right away that Baron does not listen to your commands. I think he needs to learn to stand when commanded. I bought two three year old Arab mares, not handled very much. I did get them to listen to voice commands, especially-Stand. Baron seems to move around where he wants to. Also I think he is confused about the rails, as he is used to being on one side or the other, not in the middle. You have great patience with these beautiful animals. Love your videos.

Baron might understand better if you can set up two poles on the ground as if they are shafts and teach him to park in between them without the blinders on. Years ago I had a pair of very expensive, large, and stiff logger boots which can be difficult to “break in”. After suffering for a couple of days I took the advice that was given me which was to fill them with warm water and put them on. Like Bill said, it sounded crazy but I did it, it made a big difference. It worked for me. Now I’m retired and no longer where those big heavy boots!
I was carefull with the collar on a young 3yo and would go upside down and flipping later. Saw the horse had some reserve. Tried presenting it in correct orientation and she was hell yeah ! and slipped in it herself. All horses are different, and if you encourage them to communicate they will tell you what they prefer . I find it very rewarding

Jim I can't believe how patient you have been with hooking barren up to the cart! That's impressive! As far as him moving when you pick up the lines, why don't you just leave him tied and pick the lines up and stand back there until he holds still. Then walk backup to his head, leave him tied to the lead rope, then walk back and pick up the lines . Do that over and over until he doesn't move when you walk back behind him with the lines.

Great video, I like watching you train Barron. General concept with horse training make the wrong thing difficult for him and make the right choice easier for him. Maybe try taking 2 poles on the ground and having him stand in between those poles. As soon as he tries to move than push him harder and make him work. Give him minutes in between sessions/your asks of him to let him think. He just seems like he's constantly reacting and not thinking...hes 3 so there's that. Alternatively, tie one of the other horses beside him during hitch him. Maybe that woukd calm him down and behave.

My inexperienced take was that Baron was trying to do right, but didn't understand yet what Jim wanted. That to me is better than being intentionally willful to disobey. Time and your good patience will do it.

We’d get them used to standing square on a raised rectangle box and then build in putting cart behind as they got better at standing there for longer. Kind of like teaching a dog stay. It takes time but might be worth a shot

Thank you. Coming from one of those who have no one to help at all, I have found lots of groundwork and long reining to help in these situations. Set up different sets of parallel poles (I use jump poles or deer posts) around the place and practice on the ground both leading and driving. Teach them the "natural horsemanship" methods of moving their hind end and shoulders individually from side to side...one single step at a time.... I use a dressage whip length whip or stick to begin with if standing in front, or the rope end. Repetition. Groom between poles. If they step out, Correct them every single time. The other thing to try is the "natural horsemanship" idea of making the behaviour you do not want to be hard work for them and where you want them to be, to be easy. Instead of correcting when he steps out over a shaft unasked for; unclip him, take him out and make him go in circles shifting his hind end away like a turn on the forehand (the western mob call it "disengaging the hind quarters") 6 or so times so he has to work hard, then let him "rest" when he stands quietly between the shafts. He will soon get the idea that is is really hard work when he steps out uninvited and it is much less effort just to stand quietly. I noted he did a 360 degree turn well both sides, but did not like the extra half circle you asked, and began backing. Interesting it was similar both sides.

I think Baron is getting spoiled he does not want to pull the cart alone and as soon as you unhitch him from he wants back in the stable. I think I would leave him tied up out side for a half hour or so just to let him know that just because he is unhitched he does go directly to the barn.

Jim is a model of gentle patience and persistence. Some thoughts based on driving my TWH saddle horses to single carts. Baron seems a bit sensitive to touching things with his hind legs. Maybe some work repeatedly touching those legs from higher up down to hooves until he sighs and stops fussing. I then made a little obstacle course from jump rails, you could use smaller logs. 4 or 5 logs to step over. Box to turn in and step out or back out. Spiral. Ect. Being a stallion, he has a mind of his own and will persist more than a gelding, lol. Just tie and let stand, before and after exercise, while harnessed, until relaxes and just stands quietly. A solid tie wall so pawing gains a horse nothing and keeps him safe from hanging a hoof is a thought. Repeated hitch and unhitch, without going anywhere, until shows patience. Even take a training shaft and repeatly bring it up and even over his back, touching until he relaxes. It will help when the weather allows outside time for him, in paddock, pasture, or hard work.

With the new collars (and maybe the old ones too), could you soak them in a leather conditioner or at least rub a leather conditioner on them? I am thinking back to my days of playing baseball and softball. When I got a new glove (and even the old ones), I would soak/rub a special leather conditioner on the gloves to soften and protect them. I would also put a baseball or softball in the glove, and tie it up to help the glove form to the baseball or softball.
Jim it looks to me like Baron has gotten sweet on the barn entrance where you take off his lines and bridle and that is contributing to him not wanting to stand after being unhitched from the cart. I would try making the unhitching point at the cart the sweet spot such as waiting for him to get quiet there and take off the lines and bridle in the same spot you unhooked from the cart and then lead him to the barn. If you try that for a while he might stop being sweet on the barn. I had a similar issue with my mares wanting to hurry back to the hitch rail after we were done mowing out in the field. I started unhitching out in the field, took the bridles and lines off, let them graze for a minute, and led them back for a few times and they learned to be sweet on whatever spot I stopped the mower. Just a thought you can try if you want. I always enjoy watching your videos and getting new ideas. Thanks for sharing.

I agree Baron needs some more training but he will get it eventually. He does learn quickly to voice commands and tries hard to please. I hope Baron will get his mane roached before spring (less pulling from collar). Bill is a kind gentleman! Glad Brenda videoed the difficulty Jim had with Baron in the shafts. I think Baron is having the normal horse problem of not liking things at his feet, so walking him between poles on the ground could help. He's young, so he still doesn't have full control of his body, and he has to be taught he can safely walk in a narrow space, and lift his feet over small obstacles on the ground. Also, touching his leg that needs to move may help, so he can make the brain connection to "that limb must take action." Finally, maybe take him out in harness, but no bridle or no blinders, so he can see how easily he can walk into the shafts? I felt your frustration but I was still smiling at how hard Baron was trying. Bill is the goodest boy!

I liked the comment about putting the cart alomgside the trailer so he can't exit as easily. Another thing to try might be to immediately move him off when he steps outside the shafts and then make him do some circling. After circling a bit lead him back in and see if he will stand. Make the standing still a reward and the movement a reason he has to "go to work."

great patience with Barron Jim, well done, when I've had a horse that wants to rush back to the barn after unhitching I have turned around and and long reigned them for half an hour, then when finally heading back to the stable I would stop at least half a dozen times before eventually getting there. ( this only works if you have time, and that is the key). Good luck, Barron is doing great, but there is always a little hiccup of one sort or another along the way, as I'm sure you know.
Yep, ah ha.😄 duck tape has fixed alot of issues on the fly over the years, that and bailer twine. I would sew it with good thread, once I have a good weave, I would press in liquid vynal (with a puddy knife) 2 or 3 coats, it flows out like glass and can be painted after it dries, but yes,, takes time time. :-) I have fixed many things,this way. Takes patience.

I thoroughly work in saddle soap good and deep into my new leather. Then use a good old fashioned leather dressing. Let that dry, then soak the leather in water till very pliable. After a good soak, I fit the tack to the horse and go to work. After work, I re-soap and re-dress the leather. I repeat as needed for fitment.

I had to chuckle at Baron's trouble hitching up! He seemed to be trying so hard but not quite getting what Jim wanted. I guess that since he's only three there's still a bit of baby brain going on there, but I'm sure he'll catch on pretty quick! Jim seems to be a gentle and patient trainer, and I love how he warmed the bit in his hand before putting it in his mouth. That's just a kind thing to do on such a cold day.

I know nothing about all this but didn’t know if you could put the cart/shaves parallel with the truck body that you tie him to. That way you would have a wall, and then move him over to step over the shaves. And have him just stand there. Then slowly as time progresses, and Baron gains confidence; start moving the cart/shaves away from the “wall.”
Of course I understand that I’ve no idea how wide the cart is in comparison to the truck body; but he is used to the walls of his stall, and that wall might help you some-it may not too! IDK!!!

I have an idea how you could go about teaching Baron to walk into the shackles.
Place the cart along the side of the trailer so Baron can't go over on that side. Turn the cart in different directions so that he learns to enter from both sides. When he gets the hang of it, angle the cart out more and more so that it will eventually be at an angle to the trailer.
It is so exciting to follow Barons training and I am convinced he's gonna be a wonderful working horse.
He is doing really well🙌🏼, impressed how he is progressing👏He understands your words! Because I don’t hitch my boy up that much, he too steps outside or over the sheaves. He is getting better. Right now I have my cutter parked parellel to the fence, I walk him over the sheaves and position him so he backs in between them so If he steps outside the sheaves, I take him out and get him to do a few quick circles. He is realizing it is better to stand. He doesn’t like doing circles! Once he is standing, I tie him to the post. You might have more control over maneuvering him and lifting the sheaves by backing him in. I had to slow it right down. Slow,short, baby steps backwards. All the best. I tell you, that Baron is getting to be a big boy!❤ I would never have guessed he's longer body length than Billy Boy! Oh how beautiful he is! I dearly love how he has kind of slanted eyes, just beautiful🥰 Bless his heart, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. I see that he's really trying to do right. It isn't that he's just being stubborn. I think he just gets confused and hasn't quite "got it" yet on hitching, etc. I'm SO proud of how gently you work with him instead of how some people might get ill with him. And you also are so good to know when enough is enough rather than letting him get worried. Thank you for always being so kind and gentle with all of your horses.👌 On a different note, I've heard NY and New England areas would be getting ice and then heavy snow. I'm right there with ya on warming the bit. I used to unzip my coat and get as close to sticking in my armpit as I could, depending on the bridle. Its easy with a saddle horse bridle, not so much with blinders. If the blinders are floppy enough, you can fold the bridle closed and still get the bit in there.
My husband's uncle actually rode for Winston Churchill.
You know, driving in this low light at this time of year, it might be worth it to get some reflective material and/or a bicycle light on that rig. It may be just the camera, but you are really hard to see along that tree line. I know you have a lot of Amish in the area, and folks are probably used to watching for horses, but still. A cheap battery powered bike light would make you much more visible. I used to wear one when I walked on the road at night, and it would really stop traffic. Those reflective stickers they put on semi trailers down the sides are really good too.
He is getting really good at crossing his feet when he turns, without tripping himself. That is difficult for any horse. He is really smart. He's doing really great at backing too. I always hooked a cart that way, but my carts were a fair bit lighter. Most of the ones I've used were wooden with wooden wheels, one was metal with motorcycle wheels. Pretty much all of them could be pulled with one hand.
For the uninitiated, I always hitched and unhitched in the same order too. The most basic, stripped-down racing harnesses sometimes only have shaft tugs. With a light enough vehicle, the horse can still pull, stop, and turn with nothing but shaft tugs and a tight false girth figure-eighted around those tugs. As long as those are still hooked, the horse still has control of the cart. This is crucially important if something goes wrong and the horse gets away from you. Take away the ability to pull first, it is least needed. Take away the holdbacks next, you don't want a horse dragging a cart by a holdback, particularly if there is a shaft dragging on the ground. Take away the shaft tugs last.
Jim, I don't think Baron is being belligerent. He has tried so hard to figure things out and be obedient right from the beginning and he is clearly a very smart youngster. That said, he does seem to blow a circuit breaker when there is too much input at once. My best guess about what is going on is that he has gotten used to stepping over one pole with Kenny there to show him where to stand. Give him two poles and no Kenny and he has no clue what you want. He doesn't know whether he is supposed to step over both and get on the left side, where he is used to being, or stay on the right side, where Kenny usually is. The middle isn't even occuring to him. Even though you are putting him in the middle and working him there, he isn't getting the concept of stepping into the middle. One option might be to take Kenny along and tie him on the right side, to keep Baron from stepping back and forth. That eliminates one of the three possibilities, and once you make it clear that left isn't where you want him either, then middle might occur to him. Once he's hitched, you could put Kenny back in the barn, or let him stand there until you come back, if he isn't bad about standing alone. You could also maybe put a gate, or a gate with a piece of plywood on it to keep the shafts from getting hung in it, on one side of the shafts so he can't just step through. Using a corner of the barn as a place to hitch might be another option. A stack of hay bales would probably work. Something needs to be there to keep him from just swinging from one side to the other and back.
Also, it doesn't seem like Baron is real comfortable with having that many poles under foot on the ground where he can't see them. It might not be possible for you to do this, as Baron is a pretty big colt, but when I started mine I always started them in an open bridle. I didn't want to have a situation happen in the future where a bridle broke or came off, and the horse saw the cart behind them for the first time. Breaking them in an open bridle means they can see all that stuff on the ground, and it is easier to figure out where to put their feet. But also, he is going to need to be comfortable with poles on the ground in the woods. Maybe it might help to take him out in the woods in a halter or open bridle, and let him practice getting through downed saplings, etc. Many people use cavaletti poles for something like this with a saddle horse or driving horse, but that is only because they have the money to buy such a thing. Getting out in the woods would serve the purpose.

Counter weight the back of the buggy so it just stands on it own. Walk him in for now until he gets really comfortable with those shafts. Then work some more on walking in with them down. I'm like you, the trouble will get worse if you push it.
Suffolks have a different conformation to Belgians thats why the harness sits differently. Does a brand new collar chafe the horse at all until it settles to shape. ?
My grandad used to prop the shafts up on oil drums and back his horses in .
The snow starts making that crunchy sound at 5 degrees Fahrenheit. This might be a reason why his ears were facing backward and stress. Also, frost on the face hair is a learning experience.

Jim, today's video showed what a master teamster you really are. Your patience and commitment to both expecting Baron to perform but also allowing him space to learn is inspiring to us. Despite the challenges with hitching up, you appear to have had a great driving session with him. This tells me his respect and trust for you is well established and although Baron may be unsure about certain tasks/requests, the challenge/frustration doesn't phase him for later tasks.

Here's what I would do if he was a saddle horse, as that has been what I have been working with over the years. I'd try to isolate the reason for Baron being antsy at the shafts. Is it the shafts themselves or the fact that he's away from the other horses. First I'd tie another horse next to the shafts so that Baron has some company when being hitched. If that worked I'd keep the other horse in place until such time as Baron gets more comfortable with the hitching process. If it seems to be the shafts themselves that are the issue, I would treat the problem the same as I would with a horse that doesn't want to cross water, a bridge or get in a trailer. I'd drive or lead him back and forth over them, maybe pausing when he had his front feet in the right place and again when his rear feet are in place, maybe even backing him out. I'm not even sure that when he was properly positioned for the first time or two, I would even try to lift he shafts up into place. My goal would be to make standing between the shafts the most comfortable place he could be. But you're an old horseman from way back (and a good one), you'll figure it out.

I'm not surprised that Bills collar is rather tight on Baron. The one thing that stood out to me, when Baron first came on the scene, was the size of his neck. Stallions generally have larger necks anyway, but especially, draft horses. Baron did great, once you got him hitched up.

Baron is coming along really nicely and it is fun to watch you work with him. I bought my first horse at age 57 and needed him to stand absolutely still while I mounted. Of course he did exactly what Baron was doing, stepping away. A trainer helped me solve that in only a couple of lessons. I would get up on the mounting block and Danny would move away so the trainer had me get off the block, hold the reins in my left hand and push Danny away from me, the same direction that he had stepped away. I would push him in a circle around a few times, then line him up at the mounting block. If he stepped away, I would repeat. Pretty soon (3 or 4 times) he got the idea. It is less work to stand than to step away. In your case you would unclip him from the trailer and push him far enough away from the trailer so you can circle without hitting the cart or trailer. If Brenda was helping you could hitch away from the trailer so you had more room to circle him.
The same trick worked with my next horse, a 7 year old Arab. Baron is smart, he will pick it up quickly.

I noticed right away that Baron does not listen to your commands. I think he needs to learn to stand when commanded. I bought two three year old Arab mares, not handled very much. I did get them to listen to voice commands, especially-Stand. Baron seems to move around where he wants to. Also I think he is confused about the rails, as he is used to being on one side or the other, not in the middle. You have great patience with these beautiful animals. Love your videos.

Years ago I had a pair of very expensive, large, and stiff logger boots which can be difficult to “break in”. After suffering for a couple of days I took the advice that was given me which was to fill them with warm water and put them on. Like Bill said, it sounded crazy but I did it, it made a big difference. It worked for me. Now I’m retired and no longer where those big heavy boots!

I was carefull with the collar on a young 3yo and would go upside down and flipping later. Saw the horse had some reserve. Tried presenting it in correct orientation and she was hell yeah ! and slipped in it herself. All horses are different, and if you encourage them to communicate they will tell you what they prefer . I find it very rewarding

Jim I can't believe how patient you have been with hooking barren up to the cart! That's impressive! As far as him moving when you pick up the lines, why don't you just leave him tied and pick the lines up and stand back there until he holds still. Then walk backup to his head, leave him tied to the lead rope, then walk back and pick up the lines . Do that over and over until he doesn't move when you walk back behind him with the lines.

Great video, I like watching you train Barron. General concept with horse training make the wrong thing difficult for him and make the right choice easier for him. Maybe try taking 2 poles on the ground and having him stand in between those poles. As soon as he tries to move than push him harder and make him work. Give him minutes in between sessions/your asks of him to let him think. He just seems like he's constantly reacting and not thinking...hes 3 so there's that. Alternatively, tie one of the other horses beside him during hitch him. Maybe that woukd calm him down and behave.

We’d get them used to standing square on a raised rectangle box and then build in putting cart behind as they got better at standing there for longer. Kind of like teaching a dog stay. It takes time but might be worth a shot

Coming from one of those who have no one to help at all, I have found lots of groundwork and long reining to help in these situations. Set up different sets of parallel poles (I use jump poles or deer posts) around the place and practice on the ground both leading and driving. Teach them the "natural horsemanship" methods of moving their hind end and shoulders individually from side to side...one single step at a time.... I use a dressage whip length whip or stick to begin with if standing in front, or the rope end. Repetition. Groom between poles. If they step out, Correct them every single time.
The other thing to try is the "natural horsemanship" idea of making the behaviour you do not want to be hard work for them and where you want them to be, to be easy. Instead of correcting when he steps out over a shaft unasked for; unclip him, take him out and make him go in circles shifting his hind end away like a turn on the forehand (the western mob call it "disengaging the hind quarters") 6 or so times so he has to work hard, then let him "rest" when he stands quietly between the shafts. He will soon get the idea that is is really hard work when he steps out uninvited and it is much less effort just to stand quietly.
I noted he did a 360 degree turn well both sides, but did not like the extra half circle you asked, and began backing. Interesting it was similar both sides.

I think Baron is getting spoiled he does not want to pull the cart alone and as soon as you unhitch him from he wants back in the stable. I think I would leave him tied up out side for a half hour or so just to let him know that just because he is unhitched he does go directly to the barn.

Jim is a model of gentle patience and persistence. Some thoughts based on driving my TWH saddle horses to single carts.
Baron seems a bit sensitive to touching things with his hind legs. Maybe some work repeatedly touching those legs from higher up down to hooves until he sighs and stops fussing. I then made a little obstacle course from jump rails, you could use smaller logs. 4 or 5 logs to step over. Box to turn in and step out or back out. Spiral. Ect.
Being a stallion, he has a mind of his own and will persist more than a gelding, lol.
Just tie and let stand, before and after exercise, while harnessed, until relaxes and just stands quietly. A solid tie wall so pawing gains a horse nothing and keeps him safe from hanging a hoof is a thought.
Repeated hitch and unhitch, without going anywhere, until shows patience.
Even take a training shaft and repeatly bring it up and even over his back, touching until he relaxes.
It will help when the weather allows outside time for him, in paddock, pasture, or hard work.

With the new collars (and maybe the old ones too), could you soak them in a leather conditioner or at least rub a leather conditioner on them? I am thinking back to my days of playing baseball and softball. When I got a new glove (and even the old ones), I would soak/rub a special leather conditioner on the gloves to soften and protect them. I would also put a baseball or softball in the glove, and tie it up to help the glove form to the baseball or softball.

Jim it looks to me like Baron has gotten sweet on the barn entrance where you take off his lines and bridle and that is contributing to him not wanting to stand after being unhitched from the cart. I would try making the unhitching point at the cart the sweet spot such as waiting for him to get quiet there and take off the lines and bridle in the same spot you unhooked from the cart and then lead him to the barn. If you try that for a while he might stop being sweet on the barn. I had a similar issue with my mares wanting to hurry back to the hitch rail after we were done mowing out in the field. I started unhitching out in the field, took the bridles and lines off, let them graze for a minute, and led them back for a few times and they learned to be sweet on whatever spot I stopped the mower. Just a thought you can try if you want. I always enjoy watching your videos and getting new ideas. Thanks for sharing.

I agree Baron needs some more training but he will get it eventually. He does learn quickly to voice commands and tries hard to please. As I have said before, I enjoy the dynamic of you two working together. Jim’s love for horses and working them comes through loud and clear. Keep on sharing the stuff you do.
I think Baron is having the normal horse problem of not liking things at his feet, so walking him between poles on the ground could help. He's young, so he still doesn't have full control of his body, and he has to be taught he can safely walk in a narrow space, and lift his feet over small obstacles on the ground. Also, touching his leg that needs to move may help, so he can make the brain connection to "that limb must take action." Finally, maybe take him out in harness, but no bridle or no blinders, so he can see how easily he can walk into the shafts? I felt your frustration but I was still smiling at how hard Baron was trying.

Great video Jim and Brenda! over all I still think Baron is responding well to voice commands. (ha and gee) etc. I noticed that last video and mentioned it I was surprised how well he picked up on that. but as you showed getting him hitched to a cart etc. still needs some more work and training but I'm sure he will eventually get the idea and like the other horses will learn and it will come together. Thanks again for a great video extremely informative. ECF

Hi Jim, if you were to temporarily set up a couple rails as a sort of stall to keep Baron centered between the rails while attaching to the cart ?
Also may teach him to stay between the rails and stay still ?
Just a thought we love the horses and the content.

I liked the comment about putting the cart alomgside the trailer so he can't exit as easily. Another thing to try might be to immediately move him off when he steps outside the shafts and then make him do some circling. After circling a bit lead him back in and see if he will stand. Make the standing still a reward and the movement a reason he has to "go to work."

Enjoy watching you. And have gotten my sister hooked on watching. Love the progress Baron is making. Have you considered riding Baron? It maybe easier to teach him to stand and line up where you want him from his back. Also the whoe. Since you can feel him getting ready to move while riding. Just a thought. For a young horse he is amazing. Loved how responsive he is to gee and haw. Watching him trotting is a joy to watch. The way he moves and carries himself is poetry in motion. Thanks for sharing him. great patience with Barron Jim, well done, when I've had a horse that wants to rush back to the barn after unhitching I have turned around and and long reigned them for half an hour, then when finally heading back to the stable I would stop at least half a dozen times before eventually getting there. ( this only works if you have time, and that is the key).
Good luck, Barron is doing great, but there is always a little hiccup of one sort or another along the way, as I'm sure you know.

Yep, ah ha.😄 duck tape has fixed alot of issues on the fly over the years, that and bailer twine.
I would sew it with good thread, once I have a good weave, I would press in liquid vynal (with a puddy knife) 2 or 3 coats, it flows out like glass and can be painted after it dries, but yes,, takes time time. :-)
I have fixed many things,this way. Takes patience.
