  • The airport of Barra, Scotland is the only scheduled airport in the world with a beach as runway. Only when the tides clear the seabed can pilots head for the Outer Hebrides Island in Scotland. Euromaxx reporter Hendrik Welling went there to see how this unique airport works.

I took the Ferry to Barra some 3 weeks ago and returned by plane yesterday. I cannot express how beautiful the island is, the weather can change drastically but the land, the tides, the way the light shines off the rocks to make it look like it's snowing in the middle of August - unbelievable.
I kayaked out to Fuday, picked cockles every evening until the bath was full, visited the fish factory and the gorgeous veg place ran by the sweet old biddies with summer smiles (I forget the name but it was gorgeous), swam with seals, saw seagulls attacking eagles, saw the sea change colour every hour into shades you wouldn't believe possible, cycled the entire island countless times and played golf on the most western golf course of the entire UK... Good lord I could go on....
The people were superb, utterly bonkers yet so warm and welcoming. A real Catholic yet loose population, and a humour like Derry if you know your Ireland ;)
I stayed in Eoligarry on the northern peninsula, literally 15 minutes walk form the airport in this video, so it was a good hours cycle every few days to go and get food (and tipples) from Castlebay.... But good lord. What a wholesome and beautiful place. I can't recommend it enough. It truly is Barradise. Barrabados. Barrabylon. If you ever even think about going there - do it. It will not disappoint. A truly, truly beautiful place to think, reflect, and breathe on this finite Earth we all call home.
I wish I'd never left tbh, and I wish I could spend the twilight of my years on there. Luckily, Covid willing, I will be spending my Christmas there with friends this year. And I Can - Not - Wait!
    Alba gu brath X

His accent is Scottish, specifically a West Highland / Island accent. It is a very soft, lilting accent. All people who speak English have an accent. For example the narrator appears to speak English very well with a German or northern European accent. I don't consider it strange or confusing. It is just a matter of tuning in.

in the N W of Scotland esp Islands, Scottish Gaelic is spoken, I remember in Skye hearing it in a restaurant. According to Wikipedia there are around 60,000 Native fluent speaker's.

Landing on an actual beach would be awesome! Barra roughly translates to road in my mother tongue. A runway is but a road so really am onto something here. 😂😂
