Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.
he Nightmare Before Christmas (also known as Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas) is a 1993 American stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy film directed by Henry Selick in his feature directorial debut and produced and conceived by Tim Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, the King of "Halloween Town", who stumbles upon "Christmas Town" and schemes to take over the holiday. Danny Elfman wrote the songs and score and provided the singing voice of Jack.[6] The principal voice cast includes Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page, Paul Reubens, Glenn Shadix, and Ed Ivory.
The Nightmare Before Christmas originated from a poem written by Burton in 1982 while he was working as an animator at Walt Disney Productions. With the critical success of Vincent that same year, Burton began to consider developing the film as either a short film or a half-hour television special, to no avail. Over the years, Burton's thoughts regularly returned to the project, and, in 1990, he made a development deal with Walt Disney Studios. Production started in July 1991 in San Francisco; Disney initially released the film through the Touchstone Pictures label because the studio believed the film would be "too dark and scary for kids".[1]
The Nightmare Before Christmas premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 9, 1993, and was given a limited release on October 13, before its wide theatrical release on October 29. The film was met with commercial and critical success upon release, earning praise for its animation, particularly the innovation of stop-motion as an art form, as well as its characters, songs, and score. While initially a modest box office hit, it has since garnered a large cult following and is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated films of all time.[7][8][9][10][11] It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, a first for an animated film, but lost to Jurassic Park.[12] The film has been reissued by Walt Disney Pictures and was re-released annually in Disney Digital 3-D from 2006 until 2010.
In 2023, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."[13]

I loved this movie as a kid, and I think it holds up really well, though I think the music is definitely the best part.
Thinking about the film as an adult, I feel like the message is about learning to find joy in who you are, in where you are, and in the people around you. It's basically saying that getting a makeover isn't going to cure your depression, but with a good support system you can find self acceptance and a love for life again.

I think on the deepest level, the message is that you find joy and love when you stop searching for them. jack is basically a good being and it's the joy and love of Christmas that attracts him but it turns into an ego thing. Jack sort of already had 'Christmas' all along like when Sally gave him gifts, he just didn't notice b/c he was obsessed with the aesthetics of Christmas but didn't understand what it was really about. Hence at the end when he stops thinking of it as something he can grasp, Christmas genuinely comes to Halloween town (and the re-use of the 'what's this?' melody drives it home)

They celebrated Halloween during the first song, that's why the day after the mayor says they only have 365 days until next one.

Omg it just clicked! I thought an entire year has passed already. So like they did halloween in 1993 and then tried to do christmas 1994. That’s why i thought they missed halloween. But it all makes sense now

They did Halloween 1993 and then did Xmas 1993 :) so they only had 2 months to get ready for Christmas 🙂

    🎶 "Just because I cannot see it, doesn't mean I can't believe it!" 🎶
    Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁
Fun Fact: The first fully animated Disney film to not be traditionally animated.
Inspiration Origin Fact: Tim Burton has said the original poem was inspired after seeing the Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display. The juxtaposition of ghouls and goblins with Santa and his reindeer sparked his imagination.
Music Enthusiast Fact: In Oogie Boogie's (Ken Page) Song, there was a story boarded sequence where bugs came out of Oogie's eye and danced on his arm before he belches them off. It was removed from the film because it was considered difficult to make miniature armatures for all the bugs. Another scrapped scene involved his shadow dancing on a rotating orange background and was traditionally animated but ended up being cut for timing. Despite this, the lyrics during these scenes were included in the film's soundtrack.
Math Enthusiast Fact: A crossed-out calculation on Jack's (Chris Sarandon) blackboard seems to equate 3 times the square of pi multiplied by 12 to Christmas Day (a Santa hat). The true numerical answer is approximately 355.31. If the decimal portion is dropped, this then equates to December 21st, the 355th day of the year--hence the crossed-out equation. December 21st however is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere (winter solstice). It is also the birthday of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the film's executive producer and most often credited for turning Walt Disney Studios and its animation division around after joining in 1984.

01:42 - 01:49 My mom recorded me this movie when I was a child and the 1st time I watched it I couldn't get past this song...I was too scared and I stopped the movie after"the shadow on the Moon".😰Years later I decided to give it another shot and, since then,I've rewatched it countless times, learned it all by heart(in Italian)and learned most of the songs in English too!🤩Perfect Halloween movie(yes,it can be both, but I consider it a Halloween movie.🎃)!
    03:21 Fun fact:Jack's italian voice actor is a singer called Renato Zero.💀 05:46 - 05:52 I had *no idea* what those 🍀🦃 were when I was little.😅
    07:19 - 07:23 In Italy that's pretty much _literally_ how we call him!😄🎅 16:37 - 16:39 Yeah. I know.😨See why I couldn't watch this movie as a kid?
    19:09 - 19:17 He also said 14:19 - 14:22 you little cheater!>:-/ 21:41 - 21:44 THIS ONE is from 1993,"The Corpse Bride"is from 2005 and"Coraline"is from 2009. And,out of all 3,the one that *TRAUMATIZED ME FOR LIFE* was"Coraline"!!!😖😖😖😨😨😨😰😰😰😱😱😱😭😭😭 30:01 - 30:07 Well,at least he's leaving Sally alone!:-P That's progress.

"Keep calm and skeleton on!" 😂 If you want more holiday movies like this, Tim Burton has other Xmas-y ones like Batman Returns and Edward Scissorhands. So nice to watch something seasonal with you, thank you! ❤🎄🎁

Idk if I'd call him Sallys dad... I always got more of a Warren and his.. robot from Buffy type vibe :( but that may be too dark a concept for a kids movie

One thing for sure is that Tim Burton has an immediately distinctive style doesn't he?That is one of his movies I have never watched and it may have been because I'd heard it was a musical and I don't like musicals in any form, (generally speaking). It's a unique movie for Christmas, though, which from my pov is pretty cool and I would rather see someone attempt a thing, and it not do terrific financially, than to just kick out a commercially formulaic, highly templated story.
I like what you say about the things you watch because you seem pretty fair but also telling what you really think, for good, indifferent, or bad, and you're not copying other people. You seem to be having fun, too, which is really important.

Wanting Sally to murder her creator and always calling the residents of Halloween town freaks and bashing them. You really didn't seem to want to appreciate the Halloween town for their own selves and world.
I always see reactors do this. They keep complaining and hating the professor because of his interactions with Sally, but when he decides to grow beyond that and create something else to fit the niche he wants, thus letting Sally off the hook, they still call him a freak and are negative to him calling it nasty.
I do like that you weren't totally being on Sally's side with her vision, also thinking that it just came out of nowhere. I feel It makes her being the dissenter be about her having a vision, and not anything she thought or decided on her own.
As a kid, it doesn't need a lesson or a message IMO(Not to say it doesn't have them), it can be just a good entertaining film to watch.
