I didn't know a thing about Greta Gerwig. When I first watched Lady Bird it shook me to my core. Often I've found people writing women as "women" (with all the baggage they associate with womanhood) or as "men but not men" (stripping them of pathos and female trauma completely). Greta shows womanhood so differently. LB made me an instant fan and she is the only reason why I rushed to watch this film. It was really nice to hear her take on the technicality of writing!

Kevin Kerr and Sarah Delappe also use the slash and other techniques to make dialogue feel more natural and fast paced - asterisks and multiple columns also help. I watched it near christmas with my mom and younger sister and while I held my tears in as best I could, I sobbed later that night not out of sadness but out of just pure elation at how beautiful it felt to have emotions I've felt explained on screen in a way I hadn't experience before. The genius of this version is the non linear timeline. The difference really is in meeting Laurie with Amy because it does validate their eventual marriage as it not only adheres to that rule of film that the first boy or girl that meet are the one they should end up with, even if that isn't at all how real life goes, but one of the very first things Laurie says is that he is not sorry Jo turned him down so that also validates him marrying Amy. Every aspect of this film fixed or addressed the problems I've had with other adaptions and if another wants to outdo this one then it will have to do something pretty damn impressive because as it stands right now, Greta Gerwig's Little Women is the definitive version.

She is so, so smart!!! Thank you, Greta, for breaking the stereotype that suggests screenwriting needs to be done methodically and you should always go through outlines, beat sheets, treatments, etc. The truth is - every artist has a different process. I completely relate to what Greta says - outlining for me is the fastest way to kill a story and all of my enthusiasm along with it.

    Step one: read "Little Women"
    Step two: adapt 4th screenplay.
Step three: explain how you wrote "Little Women"

Greta is definitely The Real Deal. I agree that most of writing is just sitting with the problem and trying for that break, and even when you get it you're not sure if it'll stick. I'm curious to see what she'll do with the Barbie film.
