The problem with women's sports | Haley Rosen | TEDxBoston

  • Women’s sports are on the rise, with viewership, participation and attendance all trending up. The future seems to be right around the corner, but that’s where it’s been for the last 20 years. Despite all the positive momentum, women’s sports have yet to become mainstream. Long-term investment and consistent media coverage are needed, but the real issue facing women’s sports is one that’s almost never discussed - insiders don't treat women's sports like sports.
Haley Rosen is the founder and CEO of Just Women’s Sports. Frustrated by a lack of media coverage devoted to women’s sports, Haley founded JWS in 2020 shortly after retiring from professional soccer. Starting with an Instagram account and a big idea, it took Haley only a few short months to grow JWS into the leading media platform dedicated to women’s sports. An All-Pac-12 midfielder at Stanford, Haley was named to both Forbes’ 30 under 30 and SBJ’s New Voices Under 30.

Very good explanation. I've always said that it's the wrong approach to try and shame men into watching women's sports. That doesn't result in organic growth that will last in the long term. If women want more people attending women's sports, then they should buy tickets themselves.
Instead of calling men who aren't interested in women's sports sexist, how about you market it properly to women instead?
Instead of starting with the issue of equal pay, why not focus on growing revenue so that you can afford to pay female athletes the same as men?

I myself am not tremendously into sports in general - aside from baseball - but will watch particular event games (the super bowl being an example).
With that said, my casual observation is that certain sports seem to favor women's leagues a bit better than others. As a very casual fan who isn't terribly into basketball I can spot the differences immediately between a men's game and a women's game. But when it comes to sports like tennis and soccer I really can't.
I think that's important because what draws in a lot of the money in sports isn't just the appeal among avid fans, but the appeal among casual viewers. As a casual viewer I know who Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams are the same way I know who Rodger Federer is. I couldn't tell you any of their stats, but only that they're great.
As a non basketball fan I'll still once in awhile watch an NBA game where I think "holy cow", but I just don't get that from any of the WNBA games I've seen parts of (and that includes compilations of best plays).
Now I can watch a good women's softball game and really appreciate the talent on the field. With that said, I'm definitely going to pay for the tickets to see someone like an Aroldis Chapman pitch in his prime, pitching at 105 mph. Or to see a Barry Bonds in his prime chasing 70+ home runs and hitting them a mile.
A major league ticket is much more expensive than a minor league ticket. I'm not spending the same money I would spend on a Major League game to see a minor league game or the greatest softball team in the world.
I don't know how to fix that. I'm just throwing out some thoughts.

Those are all great points from you above this comment. Something needs to change with womens sports, we need to figure out better ways to uplift womens sports and help them organically and genuinely flourish. Theres a handful of women out there who have some really entertaining skills and have burning passions for the game. I feel like a lot of outdated culture infects a lot of schools and colleges. A lot of women have the idea that womens basketball is a butch or overly masculine sport. I coach my nieces basketball team and they often say how they all really prefer volleyball (likely due to the fact that they perceive that it contains more feminine energy within the flow of the sport, at least that's how I'm guessing they perceive it). Theres many things that could be done to change it, we just need the right people to drive it foward!

I'd say the problem is it is boring. Like not golf level boring, but you kind of wince when you see a bad play and cheer when you see the team you're rooting for making a great play that you know you could never make. I honestly think there's higher level play in college women's sports leagues than in many female professional leagues.

@@jules_111 I'm personally not tremendously into sports in general, beyond the specific one that I really love (baseball). When I do enjoy a particular game (something like the super bowl would be an example) I'm watching an event. I am watching something absolutely top tier. I'm not a basketball fan, but even I can see LeBron James play and think, "WOW." When I watch those games it's not because I love sports. Similarly, when I flip past a WNBA game it's not because I just don't like women. It doesn't interest me.
I know that's cold and uninspiring, but it's also normal.
With that said, it also bothers me to see what some sports will do to bring in fans. In particular I'm thinking about something I saw recently which was a women's indoor arena football league. The women were scantily dressed and it was more about scantily clad women playing "sports" than about the sport.
It's about money and what sells. While I don't partake and watching the scantily clad women's arena football, I also just don't partake and watching most women's sports anyway.

It has a bigger issue. It's boring. Why? Because of the speed and explosive plays they lack on, if you watch any NBA game or football game, you will notice that when men pass the ball into a place where there is nobody, the closest player will dash for it, will not wait and see what happen like women does. It's just boring to watch a game so slow and so dead that it looks like the players don't even care about wining, that's the bigger difference between men sports and women sports.

I knew that the Us womens soccer team was playing a match at that time. I wanted management to switch stations and turn on the game. I went up to the front of the restaurant and who was sitting there but an entire girls soccer team ready for lunch. So i said to the young woman lets both go to the manger and ask him to turn on the USWNT game. Well i instead of support i got curious looks like i was an alien talking a strange language. Their was no connect between these players and watching the game. this is an issue that has to be addressed. I recently saw a commerical featuring Allie Krieger and Ashyln Harris urging more people (the implication being that this was aimed at woman and girls)to WATCH womens sports. Wonder if she thought about who is going to pay for the marketing, air time and equal pay. It is a bit strange she does not address that as that is where the key lies. She owns a media company so how does that go ? Many viewers ? Many sponsors ? Who are viewing ? I agree there could be more done in woman sports but it is also up to the people that want to view it and those are the base of finances. And what I understood some woman leagues get percentage wise already way more then the men. Some leagues are kept alive beause of the mens league.

Great speech with some valid points (yet to see a men's league that folds and has to be repeatedly subsidized though ) I agree with you on the guilt tripping though, the 2022 women's rugby world cup is the perfect example of that.

Can I get examples of different men's leagues that failed and were infected with hundreds of millions to revive them like you said? Saying that the main women's sports aren't broadcasted is a complete lie. The fact is most of the time everyone wants to watch the pinnacle of a sport at a given age group, whether it's high school, college, or professional not a mediocre performance so that tends to almost always be men's sports. Now I think the wnba should lower the rim to either 9 feet or 9 and half feet to start. Make these women's sports more interesting like adjusting where needed like rim height.

I feel like it comes down to how exciting it is to watch the games. This is especially true for what I see in my country Vietnam. It's so obvious because our football league doesn't get as much hype and attention as the EPL or La Liga, and I can say confidently from experience after watching a match that the level we have in V-League is just far behind what we see in EPL. It also solidifies my point even more when you consider the Volleyball scene in Vietnam, where the women is the major interest. But honestly right now it's like catch-22, you need to up the technical levels of the sports people to interest more people but you require them to have done that in the first place to get the money.

But people buy the ticket because they want a game that excites them, to make them feel alive about the sports they love... I disagree that enticment and performance are relevant a factors. I'm from a country with a poor domestic league. League is dominated by the most popular club and they often go on winning streaks of 50+ games domestically and have a single rival. It is not enticing at all, yet they hold the largest fan base and attendance rates. This trend appears in every country with a poor quallity domestic league. Vast majority of people decide on what to watch based on sentimental value (not sure whats the right word for it). My comment was directed at reguar sport watchers, that are loyal to their club and watch every game, yet ignore their female team. The main factor is relevancy.

I Hypothesize that the problem with women sports is the demography you study what sport is viewed more by a population and focus on developing both girls and boys with minimum teams to slowly grow quality from there you slowly chip away teams and individuals from both men and women not profitable from your streamline. for example, soccer should not be America's priority, but it should be the drafting of American Soccer players into BPL and Bundesliga to grow quality players for America's Soccer team both men's and women.

I've come and winged at you, mostly about what women do, like care and talk about everything about a player other than the sport (trust me, no men are discussing or interested in discussing that). Complain that men don't watch it, but women aren't, complain that investment isn't there, but that only works if people are watching and attending, and like at the football World cups you bash on about equality and woman's rights BUT you then don't want to be lectured about not watching something you are already watching. And then there are the world to female football teams that get beaten 7-0 to a schools under 15 team... Stop telling men to like something that even you as a women don't like!

It’s not entertaining. They’re slow and unathletic. Do women care about womens sports, no! They barely care about sports in general. What happening is they’re trying to force men to WANT to watch female athletes and that won’t ever happen. It’s a joke.

I disagree with this young woman's argument against "marketing" women's sports. The reason WHY you hear about what female atheletes do off the court is because the target market for womens sports ISSS OTHER WOMEN. Our brains are wired differently, Women DON't Care about stats, or how players use their technique to beat their opponents, they care about the story behind the ladies.. For example, i could give two shnits if Neymar or Messi go to a Hospital to help young kids with cancer, but the day that Ronaldinho single handedly obliterated Real Madrid and made the Madrid fans applaud his magic. That's something i will never forget. Baseball is filled with stats, women don't give a damn about stats, they care about the off the court stuff. What WOMEN need is to come together and figure out whether you will spend your hard earn money on womens sports. I promise that if the WNBA, or the NWSL get an average attendance of 20,000 women fans per game I PROMISE you, you will get all the advertising and long term investment you desserve.

When your league has negative revenue and you rely on mens leagues to fund you, there is a problem. With the womens movement that claims to 'support' women, where are they? They aren't in the stands nor are they watching the games. They aren't buying jerseys either.
Nobody is talking about how much more exciting men's sports are. Three pointers, Slam Dunks, etc. compared to get as close as you can and hope the ball goes into the basket.
When you receive free money from the mens league, you are a charity. Sorry to burst bubbles and a lot of times the truth hurts.

She is owning a media company to promote womans sports, so she is in full control of promoting it. I wonder how that business is going ? And how much paid support she got for sponsor ship but more.importantly female viewers or viewers in general. The amount of viewers determine the value of a certain sport. To me this is the same as why certain sports are not so popular as others... why dodgeball.doesnt get the same.payments as the NBA ? I get her points and there is some truth is in but market value mostly determines the value and attractive games to watch tend to perform better financially. Can not always push things into equality I think. Nothing stops woman to support woman sports, stops woman related brands to sponsor them. I mean I am totally fine if woman dominated the sports and pay, that means their game is probably nicer to watch. Right ?

The make-up companies, the fashion companies etc. So that is the US. In Europe they are starting to invest in a few years the Europeans will over take the US in soccer thier dominance will be like a dream.

Why don't men watch women's sports. It's the same reason why men don't watch AAA baseball. it's the same reason why men don't watch championship football. It's the same reason why ppl don't watch qmjhl, same reason why ppl dont' watch nba g league. The question is why aren't men watching those sports. because ppl have limited time they can spend on watching sport and ppl watch sport to be entertained and the highest league of sport has the most likely chance to entertain ppl. It is awesome. Would you watch middle aged neighborhood football league or watch the english premier league? is that sexist? LOL People only want the best. do you want to spend 12 dollars to watch a really bad movie or a movie with high ratings? And don't ask why is higher leagues more entertaining. If you have to ask you don't even belong in the conversation.
