Hi, Joe! Have you ever studied chord inversions? The chord on the second measure is an inverted chord: G#m/D#. This slash between the notes means that the band is playing a G#m chord, while the bass player is playing a D# note at same time. B chord is sounding ok for you because G#m and B are relative chords, and they share two notes: B and D#. I hope this answer helped you, but don't be afraid to ask anything else.
