The reason PC games have moved on is because Steam 1) allows you to back up your digital games and 2) your games often aren’t locked to a specific “generation” like consoles. For instance a lot of games will be updated from Windows 8 to 10 to 11. And those many older PC games will still run if updated.
@zagreatandini2345 nope and when that company decides to take down the server then the game is lost forever and everything you paid for is gone. I think I'd rather pay jacked up prices or better yet just buy the game and keep it forever so it doesn't matter wtf they sell on eBay because I won't need there copy because I still have my own! I still have ally atari nintendo software and hardware because you can't take it from me! I have lost digital games before especially online only
Yeah I buy genesis games with cases for 3 bucks from a guy at our flea market and he always comes up with n64 and ps1 and 2 games. I've seen gamecube games for 5 bucks. And yes I bought them.
@@HolyPrinceDS the same thing can happen with a lot of physical games too tho… not to mention almost every game ever released is going to be on the internet forever….
Lifes short term lol also i thought you could sell an account. I added up my account... Its like 20,000 dollars. 1800 games it says in my collection. Many are ps3 old games. You in theory could give somebody your password and sell it with your console.
But also disks. I had 100 ps2 games from gamestop. I have like 5 after moving like 20 times. So thats not entirely safe either. Then they scratch and break if your not careful.
@@ApolloT-vp5dn Just the small problem that around 95% of all game release in this day and age is need day 1 patch to work even does game with 90% of the game on the disc...
As an owner of 3 vita’s and a pstv…then 2 switches…and all previous gen…I was all physical, Now as I get older with full custody of 4 kids …it’s all steam and 2 steam decks and 3 gaming laptops in the household. Oh well I love the way the library can age with whatever you have (my Steam account is from 2009, and I still own physical copies of left 4, dead, counter strike, orange box) and it’s cheaper, but up front it can drive people off.
@@jameswalterthethird Its no longer choices. Everything is becoming only services. Also services with very bad actual service. Meaning no consistent updates and new features. Your simply renting.
I simply dont buy a game if there is no physical version. I make this exception for small indie games. But i have an eternal backlog, and someone not releasing a physical just makes it easier for me to get caught up
You have to keep in mind. Modern games are too damn big. Some of them take 100GB storage space. Tekken and Mortal Kombat games are this size on. PC. Physical games must die. The games are too damn big.
@100Bucks The games being physical has nothing to do with them being too big. Those games will be the same size with they were digital. And now we're seeing some companies put the games on multiple discs, which is great. Even if they have to charge a premium for a disc, there should always be the option.
Or better yet. If you say or do something that is deemed 'undesirable' in the future, these companies will be able to cancel your account, and you will lose access to 'their' ecosystem. I don't like these companies having that much power. I prefer to own my games.
I have 1800 games and got banned from a credit card theft. I got it back but i could not play any or even login. My ps5 was bricked till i payed sony 100 dollars. That is way too much power. I got like 10k in games. That should be illegal. I can see banning somebody from speaking in a game if they are like vile. Or even kicked off a game online if super horrible. But banned from accessing all your offline single player games even.. Thats too much power.
@@colonelradec5956why would you have to pay them $100? Makes no sense. And I agree, they shouldn’t be able to ban or brick anything ever. The only thing they should be allowed to do is prevent you from using online services if you did something illegal.
Crazy thing is this has happened to me. My son did something stupid with one of his accounts and Sony ended up banning him. He couldn't get back in his account and I ended up wasting money as the few games in their he couldn't play. Not a big loss, yet still.....this is the reason minus psvr games I do everything physical.
If your talking about cred card fraud, yeah they shouldn't be able to block you for that. If you are talking about being racist or homophobic while playing COD, you should be banned.
One reason PC gamers are less concerned about physical is that a PC is not a locked Eco system. You can't discount that. Games are increasingly being carried over when a new console comes out, but its not like a pc. Console gamers are dependent on things being made available for them.
I would say the main reason PC gamers aren't concerned is because Valve's Steam and GoG have now stood the test of time. Steam is now over 20 years old!!! Microsoft, Nintendo, and Playstation have all shut down older digital stores
TBF steam will still delist games. For example Project Cars 3 is very very inferior to its previous instalment Project Cars 2 and you can no longer buy project cars 2 on steam. So it is still a big issue but far less of one.@@biblemandelaeffect
I also pay like 60-80% less for my games on steam sales which are always happening. Even games that are less than 6months old go on sale for 50% off from time to time.
theres countless digital marketplaces, and u can look for the best deal. Xbox and PS games never go on sale and when they do its tied to the gamepass or ps+ exclusive deals. U can get a disc based game on sale a year after it came out but alot of digital games are still $50 5 years after they came out
I think another note about PC vs Consoles for digital sales is steam and pirating games, Steam has been around since 2003 and people have become very comfortable switching to digital partly due to the fact that we have storefronts like steam that you can feel secure knowing you library of game is going to exist for the long run. Pirating is also an aspect of PC gaming that gives users comfort in knowing most things that get uploaded online seldom ever become lost. It may be more difficult to obtain but even if a publisher pulls a game from storefronts you can probably find some way to get and play it. Consoles on the other hand are still in this worrying zone of never knowing if your stuff will carry over to the next generation, being shackled to one digital store front that will eventually get shut down. So there is a lot more fear of losing your game collection when going digital on console.
Thats what i love about piracy. Whoevers doing that is doing gods work. I played nintendo games from my childhood on a laptop because almost every game in history is uploaded somewhere as a rom file. Its amazing i think. Like thats.. Beautiful that somebody's willing to do all that work.
@@biblemandelaeffect ps3 was still up. the issue is there shouldn't be an older store. why can my ps5 not run my ps1 games when my ps3 could. there shouldn't be old stores. should all be pulled forward. telling me a ps5 can't emulate a ps1 when my 50 dollar cellphone can 🤣 all your games should be usuable on a new console
You know I still buy 100% of my games physically. I do not play any multiplayer games or games that require an online connection. I have not run across a game yet that I cannot install directly off the disk and play without being connected to the Internet. maybe I am in the minority and most people are just playing these multiplayer always online games. I like physical just as much as I ever did, and I have no desire to go to a all digital.
Yup. Me too. I own most consoles and I've never had any hooked to the internet and never will. I ONLY buy and have bought physical. That will never change. Nintendo for ex def won't go the digital only way. They waaaay to smart to be that dumb
You don't install the updates for newer games? Most games these days launch broken/incomplete. Without the day one update most recent games are unplayable or bug ridden. Even single player games. I feel bad for you having to play all broken games if that's the way you have been playing.
@@MAGNUMMU5TACHE no I do all the updates and everything like that but the game is playable the way that they come off the disk . And there’s somebody who has been playing games since the 80s. Besides when I put the disk or switch cart game in and SOMETIMES a download has to happen it ALWAYS plays great. I don't think these little kids would be able to handle themselves if it was the 90s. We would get a game and it would be 5 frames per second with a million glitches. And not one person biyched about it. We didn't need realistic grafx. No need for internet hookup. No need for headsets (playing by yourself even tho u think its mulitplayrr) type of games. And constantly having to update things cuz of patch after patch after patch. These lil kids today would be hopped up on more than just their Adderall. Plus they ACTUALLY think Sony vs Microsoft vs Nintendo is a console war . Lol. The actual war we alllll know who it was between. I've eveb talked to sum of these gen z ers and they think having 3 consoles IS TO MANY. Huh? In 94 we LITERALLY had 9 consoles to choose from. Its sad how its ALL about internet and grafx and NOTHING else. No wonder why most gamers are depressed living in their moms basement eating cheetos and code red.
Being 56, I’m mainly a physical collector, but I will buy digital at times, "if" that's the only way a "must have" game is released. At times I even double dipped - bought a digital-only game, only to have it get a limited run later, then bought it again. I’ll always go physical 1st, & glad I have been, as I wouldn’t be able to play *Legend Of Legaia, Shadows Hearts 1 & 2, & Summoner 1 & 2,* etc, if I didn’t own them in tangible form, as many games aren’t even on a digital store.
I did this with Psychonauts 2 because I thought it wasn't getting a physical release. I waited for it to go on sale, of course. I bought it a few months ago when it was on sale for about $25 from Amazon's Woot website.
I think the reason physical isn't a concern for PC is because you can crack the DRM off of pretty much any game that's out there and copy the files infinitely, it's just as good as a physical copy if not better. Also the whole "the game isnt even on the disc" thing applies to a tiny minority of games, and of that tiny minority the majority of them are online games that won't last forever anyway. Most physical games can be played from start to finish with no patches, heck for the past couple of years every first party Nintendo release has launched with no day one patch.
@@dapperfan44 I'm so sick of it too man, it doesn't help with keeping physical media alive, it just makes people not see the point to it when it's not even true. Everyone who spreads this misinformation claims to dread the all digital future but they're helping it come sooner.
That's what I've been saying for so long most games are playable without a patch. It may not be the best version but It's the publisher's fault for not making the base disc game playable and requires so many patches.
Physical media as a finished game fully stored on a disc/cartridge is definitely much more consumer friendly. (Massive fan of 3DS carts which stored the full game and the save data)
I don't have a problem with going all digital provided that its contingent on two things: 1. No DRM or always online for single player titles. 2. Buying is owning and no developer or game company is legally allowed to remove any digital game or content from someone's account without their consent. I personally think there should be laws on this protecting the consumer.
The laws definitely need to be updated to protect the consumer. Issue is that the lobbying on behalf of companies have much more $$$. But with enough push back, like the case with Discovery, we can get our paid content back
Exactly.. As long as Nintendo sony and microsoft guarantee we always have access to our games I dont care.. I feel confident they will do that.. Otherwise people will be switching to PC
I’m 39 and grew up with this physical cartridges of my favourite NES/SNES/N64/GB games. And I still own a lot of them 3 decades on and can play them right now! Are we going to be able to play these digital games in 30 years?? I recently bought an old Xbox 360 and couldn’t access some of the games and DLC content I purchased on my Xbox Live account from 2010 on an old console. I will always buy Physical as long as it remains an option. I’m more likely to take a chance on a new game that I can trade in if I don’t enjoy it. If I’m forced to spend £60 on a new digital game, I’ll hesitate to try something new and eventually I’d stop buying games!
Physical games from back in the day are really different than games now. You didn't need internet for those games what so ever. Also the fact that you didn't buy 100+ physical games back in the day is another factor. I buy digital with my PS4 because I don't have room for 100+ games to put on my shelf. I wait for sales to play my games. I won't spend more than $40 now. I spend about $20 an avg per game sometimes less than $10 now. When I beat my PS4 games or quit them I never play them ever again. This is = to the physical games I have & don't play them because they are sitting on my shelf for years not being touched either.
Brought to you by the same people who said you will drink your own piss and eat your own fecal matter while we force you to eat zee bugs. Think it’s a joke. Better learn to fight.
Here's my real take on digital versus physical. when a console is discontinued they stop making games for it just like they did with the Nintendo 3DS. when you have a physical copy you always own that physical copy, you can grab it open it up read the insert. not only that they don't even give you a deal when you buy a digital copy. which is cheaper because of no disc involved.
I used to be mainly PC gamer and am used to the digital only sales. At the start of Xbox One & PS4 I bought a lot of physical games, but then after the first year I pretty much only bought digital. For the current gen I do not own a single physical game.
The thing I dislike the most about digital games is that at least on consoles the prices are terrible I can buy a Nintendo first party game from the Nintendo e-shop for $79.99 Canadian or I can go to one of my local game stores and buy it for $59.99 because the game has been out for a few years it makes no sense that I can buy a new physical copy for less then the digital copy of most games. I personally like a combination of physical and digital because I like being able to share games and I like seeing my collection
It might be interesting to see more home brew physical games or the continuing growth of the indie retro system market like Evercade, etc… there always will be demand for physical and it will always continue to exist in some way. I won’t be surprised if there’s a physical game renaissance at one point like what happened to vinyl.
I do miss going to my local game store to pick up new games where I used to know all the people who worked there & it was kind of a social thing. Same for going to the music shop to buy new cd's. That kind of interaction is missing from the scene today.
When Microsoft and Sony are stating there is a lack of growth in the industry, this is part of the reason. How do you advertise games that people can't see. You advertise to your existing audience, but where are your new players coming from? When you'd go to the game store, you'd see all the new releases, browse them and see things you'd otherwise never been interested in. I suspect that the loss of retail sales means the average consumer, who doesn't do CZcams, doesn't go online game websites etc. is being lost. I believe they'll live to regret the digital only future.
This is why I like retro games. I can browse the store and pick out games that I want . Occasionally I’ll buy from eBay , but I prefer going to a store.
Actually, the majority of modern physical games do NOT need access to a server to play. That includes PS4 and PS5 DISCs. A few high profile games that do have created a false narrative that most games are this way, which simply isn't true. And you should know this. I own over 100 PS3 games, 92 PS4 games, and 22 PS5 games that don't need access to the Internet or a day one patch that play fine. All the install files are on the DISC, and the vanilla versions aren't actually broken. That's over 200 games that don't need access to a server to play. And there are many, many, many, many more that are the same. And I really wish influencers would stop perpetuating the myth that DISCs are just access keys. That's only really true of a handful of games.
I still buy physical media but companies have to realize if you released a game on digital and the services are shut down and you can't re-download your game piracy is acceptable when the company robbed you of your product.
As a 19 year old myself i can't understand for the life of me why so many people around my age don't seem to care about physical media whatsoever. Ever since I was a small child I knew i never owned anything unless i could hold it in my hands so I've always cared deeply my entire life about owning Physical Books, movies. And games.
I often had digital versions first and if I really enjoyed the game I bought a physical as well. I recently bought WindWaker HD for the WiiU even though I had that one digitally since its release. Same for a few 3DS games. But recently I also started buying games for my SteamDeck and all of those are digital only. I hope physical games will still be available in the future though. And these recent developments where games just disappear from your library because the platform retracts/removes them is a bit concerning though…
The reason it fits better in PC space is because the pc isn't going to get shut down production wise like consoles do. Sure, the OS for older games might be replaced by newer operating systems for newer games, but you can always dual boot, or simply wait for a patch to get the game working with the newer OS. In dealing with consoles, when their lifespan ends, unless backcompat is supported, you are SoL. Now are we starting to see more backwards compatibility with the last two console generations...sure, but not to the point where I would feel comfortable sinking money into media that may or may not work with the newer generation of console hardware. I don't find myself in the collector edition market, but that is a popular market, especially in Asia. I prefer physical media hands down.
The grand majority of PS4 and PS5 games that are sold physically have the game on the disc. Sure there are some that don't, but otherwise if you disconnect your PS from the internet and insert a disc into it, the entire game is there. People need to learn that installing a game from a disc is NOT THE SAME as downloading it from the internet.
Exactly. Doesitplay's website has 69% of the 302 PS5 games they tested as playable straight from the disc with no internet/patches required. Will the games be more buggy and have worse performance? Probably, but still playable.
first off I am 57 years old and have been playing games since the first pong system. I love that idea of digital only the only problem I have is the digital older games you get from the console stores is always a higher price than if i bought it on disk. I just bought elden ring brand new for $49.99 but the digital version is still $69.99 on the console store. So when they start to match these prices as the physical game on digital i would go all digital. its just greed from the game companies because they can set the price and you will have to pay it. Bottom line which sucks.
I feel you on that. Only reason why I normally buy physical on consoles or at least look for a sale for both physical and digital and compare. however, I've since moved on to PC because games imo are so much cheaper to buy. One of the reasons why I haven't looked back since. My P4 and Xbox have been collecting dust for several years.
I fully believe that these companies will go ‘digital only’ to inevitably create their own repro/limited edition physical copy special edition releases in the future
Even if you store CDs, DVDs and Blue rays in climate controlled rooms, the data will not be guaranteed on the film layer of those discs past 20 years. Even with zero scratches. Just accept it. Digital is actually the best way in most cases to preserve the past via emulation and self storage. Instead of buying rooms full of retro games you should build a high end PC with 20TB of fast storage. Then create a RAID backup. Steam does digital the best because even when games get taken off the store front, I can still reinstall the game if I bought it. That's the difference. Sony, Nintendo and Xbox don't do that. They just take your money and one day its gone. Steam will hold onto games on their servers for those that are grandfathered in.
Ditto, I live in the tropics and had to get rid of a bunch of Wii U games because they rotted. Some of them had silica gels to absorb the moisture but even then. I stopped buying dics based games since then. Also had to throw out a bunch of music CD, s that I haven't used for the past few years because they rotted. That what's with those Wii U games anyways, they don't last.
Shawn: We joke a lot in you comment section. But, in all serious, you are dead on correct today. Well said. As an old dude, I hate the idea of an all digital future. But I realize it’s happening. Companies want it and kids today don’t care. They don’t own CDs, they don’t own DVDs, why should we expect them to care about physical games? Instead of fighting the inevitable all digital future, we should be working to make it work better. We should be working to ensure actual, transferable ownership rights for physical games.
44 years old. When I found out I could download digital games on my ps3 and not have to put switch disks I never looked back! My digital library of over 10 years is all good! Yes games have been removed from online stores. Companies lose licenses etc.but since I purchased them they remain in my library. I hope that alleviates peoples fears. Some disks that I had stopped working. And to the point about emulation. I got more games than I can play from Atari to PS2
Also 44 years old. I will always go for physical first, I enjoy taking a game off the shelf and putting it in the console. That said, on some level I'll do some digital because.. yeah, looots of unaffordable games from Atari to PS2. Glad I can get flash carts/power paks for cartridge systems. Gotta research more about the best way to play disc based systems from ROMs.
Switching discs is a pain lol. I realized this when I was playing games online with my friends & we play like 3 games once a week on a said day. Especially the switch games that are harder to get those games out because they are a lot smaller & you can lose them easier. Also the fact that you don't have to worry if a game is sold out or wait for them to bring you the games lol. How many times would you wait a long time at a Walmart or Best Buy just for them to unlock the game bring it to the cash to have you waiting in line. In 2017 when I was still collecting Physical copies for games, I remember the Walmart was packed & at the time I had bought Assassin's Creed Origins. I remember waiting 1 hour plus because they were they were serving so many people at that time. I went there because the game was on special for $20. So now I go digital because I want to avoid all these hassles of going to a store to wait for them to bring me my physical cop of a video game.
I’m pretty sure the community will shore up any necessity for download patches and online in the future, we’ve already seen it happening with the Wii and Xbox
I think that in the coming digital only landscape, it would be awesome if they would make an option to run an external disc drive and a service to order a physical copy of any games you want, and pay a premium for it obviously. Maybe save cost by eliminating nearly all of the packaging and branding so you just get a disc in a paper sleeve with basic block letters on the disc for the game title. That way the physical media doesn't gather dust on store shelves, and the companies would make a good profit on the one-off disc orders.
He didn’t invite you because he knew you would just ramble through his whole video trying to get to that 10 minute mark forgetting that you weren’t making one of your videos but was a guest on his.
PC gamers moving on from physical is a little bit different as the games had codes that once used made the physical copy more or less useless to anyone else, affecting it's resale.
If digital takes over completely I will just play old games. I will not support these companies if they get rid of physical games. You do not own your games that are digital.
MetalJesusRocks looks like a dinosaur that plays his games on cassette tape. Okay boomer, you do boomer things. I don´t care about the medium, just enjoying the games matters to me.
MJR worked for Sierra games back in the 90s, PC game company. He also has a very large library of physical games going back to the 80s plus a Windows 98 PC for DOS games. It just happens to be what he likes, nothing wrong with that. And I also love my library of physical retro games.
On a digital note, I was going to download Trover saves the universe for my quest 3 and it's on my wishlist but the game has been delisted with no sign of a return, so now that game for the quest and digital psvr has just gone.
Some older games I can't find physical anymore, so I have to buy them digital. If a company is looking at the sales it might seem like I want to buy digital, but I don't. Some games that I want to be ready at any time I buy digital though.
I left physical for awhile, I used to collect, there are many reasons to leave, as many to collect, but disc should stay, so who you go to press these discs in 2024?
If we go totally digital, I'm done, I'm out. There's no point owning a console. As a gamer who spends £1000s a year on physical games, they lose my custom. I'll be back to retro, playing my backlog.
As a proud retro gamer of 30 years this ''all digital future'' doesn't affect me. I'm just sitting here laughing and watching the video game industry destroy itself. I was a Sega Mega Drive kid back in 1993 and still a Sega Mega Drive kid in 2024 so Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo can all screw themselves with their online servers, digital downloads and licensed rental service.
I hope that the physical market survives and stay strong. We know that game developers will always keep pushing for an all digital, because of profits and their greed.
I’m primarily a PC gamer however I do enjoy my switch and I buy all my games digitally for both PC and Switch. It’s just something I’m used to being a PC gamer but also I am sick a lot which requires sometimes long hospital stays of weeks / months and having everything digital is helpful / easier for me personally given my situation.
PC gamers accepted the “all digital” storefront thing because there are no "console generations" on pc and you don't have to worry about a store closing because the hardware it was designed for has been replaced. There is never a guarantee that a previous generation of console games will carry over to a new generation for a host of reasons from copywrite issues to companies just knowing they don’t have to, because they can remake a game that’s less than 10 years old and we will all go run and buy the “definitive” remaster. If a game came out in 2013 on steam, you can still purchase that game on steam today (assuming it didn't get delisted, which is a different story) but if you want a 3ds or wii u game that came out in 2013 you can’t still go get that game today on the wii u eshop because it doesn't exist anymore. There are many games that didn't come out physically that are now lost in the ether. You can’t really compare the PC game market to the console game market for that reason. “All digitals” benefits are not benefits of the consumer aside from maybe some short term convenience. Its lower costs for publishers that don't need to make physical copies, yet they still charge the same amount of money for a game that no longer has that added expense. I see the issue as more than digital ownership, which we all know is a farce anyway. I see a future in which all digital leads to less places to be able to purchase your games, meaning higher prices and fewer sales to save some money on your games in the long run because they can. When the only place you can get your games is direct from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo it'll be a problem. I prefer physical myself for a host of reasons, but let’s not kid ourselves if you think about it objectively physical is already dead. Games need day 1 patches and often release in a state that is far from finished for months... sometimes years post launch. If its an age thing, as a gamer in my early 40s, its a matter of younger gamers not seeing any of this as a problem because they havent been in the hobby long enough to really understand what they will lose.
As someone who is 30+ years old I definitely prioritize getting a physical copy whenever possible. Even for bigger developers getting a hard copy of a game is tough.
Metal Jesus Rocks is the biggest scammer in gaming world. He throws false copyright strikes, 40K for a basement leak (which he spent on his Japan holiday), 50K for his RV trip (which failed) & 'Hiddenn Gems' videos, which amount to Insider Trading as he buys games at low prices, pushes them up, then sells. He also doesn't play any videogames, as he regularly proves.
my view on physical vs digital has changed due to the physical not having anything on the disc anymore anyway and still having a large download on day 1. Now I think i'll get digital only as it saves me swapping discs to play them. Trade in prices aren't worth much now which was my only benefit but I do like to buy the games I LOVE as physical to display on my shelf. I just wish digital was cheaper cause we aren't paying for a disc / box etc
Believe it or not there are parts of the USA that has little to no internet. The bad thing about digital is it can take several days to down load a game without the disk. It make new game day turn into new game week...😢
Good point about current platform discs. The disc is just a license key for you to download the actual game from online. What happens when the servers eventually go down? You just have a paperweight of a disc.
As someone said on Digital Foundry podcast: 'real preservation is on PC'. By emulation or by simply by running the pc version, you have the access to all the files and its way easier to modify a game to run without a server verification there.
My biggest fear is we will see worse sales and less frequent sales if you notice games digitally usually don't go down in value so a game that might be 30 bucks everywhere physically like say smt5 is still full price digitally.
PC gamers have moved on because -even with DRM-, you can always find a not-so-legal backup somewhere fairly easily if you know what you're doing. This is much easier than jailbreaking a console and finding the games for those and using them. But also transferring games between systems is much easier: your games usually are still supported after an upgrade. And in cases they aren't, there usually is some way to fix that. (either running an older OS, running a virtual machine, patching the game somehow, ...)
I dunno what the future holds and what’s going to happen with titles that require a connection, but I am trying my best to install every game I own on some type of media. It’s an expensive option, but I have a few loaded SD cards for my digital switch games and external SSDs for my ps5 games. For now at least, the majority can play offline from the media so there’s that but there are more and more that require an online check that I’m unsure about
I'm thinking I'm going to start hitting up my local Facebook market place and buy my cities 3DS', Wii's, Wii U's and games and start stockpiling physical media so I have something to play in the future!
100%!! The only way for digital policies to evolve and improve is for them to become the primary form of ownership and the focus of debates/regulation.
I’m 44 and I’ve always very much preferred physical media. To the point that I went all physical for the Switch and even bought a lot of Limited Run games. BUT I got an X Box Series S and I’m loving the all digital. Call me lazy but not having to get up to change games is super convenient .
Absolutely correct both have advantages and disadvantages. I’ve never broken a disc or cartridge of a digital game and lost it forever but I have had digital games “erased” from my library without reason. Nostalgia may play a bigger part than we want to admit but that’s not a bad thing.
i think the long term plans of these companies are worse not ust getting rid of the disk but eventually getting rid the box you play them on and the entire idea of gaming offline being a thing of the past because it's streamed
I’m old enough to remember buying a game and reading the instruction manual on the way home. Sadly, those days are long gone. The only reason to buy physical copies are for censorship issues that will happen in the near future.
I think having physical media available is super awesome for preservation purposes, but personally for both consoles and PC (back when I used to play PC games), I've always preferred digital. I don't think they should ever really get rid of physical games, especially for console... they should definitely continue to release them, even if in smaller batches. Tbh, IMO the real argument is actually digital/physical vs. cloud-streaming. It's not a big concern as of now since cloud streaming isn't that great, but it's going to be as the internet continues to speed up and services are upgraded over time - and when it does, it WILL be an issue. The cloud-streaming aspect is very much relative to the whole Spotify/Netflix business model, and pretty much aligns with the "own nothing and be happy narrative" which is absolutely evil when it's artificially induced and not a personal choice (which it will be, lol). As a singer/songwriter/producer with music placements worldwide (AND I've had a lil' history in the acting industry as well), I know for a fact what the streaming model has done to those sectors of business, and it hasn't been very kind... because of them, it's been quite rough for creators and companies who release these products. Prior to these kind of services, being connected to al A-list release could quite potentially make you enough money to buy a house and sustain yourself... think of the music industry back in the 1980's, for example. Bands could write ONE hit record and each member would be able to buy a nice house for themselves... well, today, not so much... It started with Napster (and yes, LimeWire), and then companies like Spotify simply made it 100% legal using the argument "well, it's better that you get paid something vs nothing at all!" which initially makes sense, but is just a scapegoat as I find it encourages people to adopt this model as the norm, where as before, at least it was shunned as illegal or taboo - PLUS, people STILL pirate music/movies/shows the old fashioned way regardless, so it doesn't actually help or deter people whatsoever from breaking the rules and singing "Yo Ho Ho" hahaha. I've seen checks and percentages issued to myself and others, and these streaming companies make a majority share of the profits and the artists/creators get paid literally pennies on the dollar. I swear to God, it's the truth. Although I'm no fan of Taylor Swift and her witchy woman concerts, I will stand for what's right and affirm that when she went on that tirade about Spotify many years ago, she was completely on point with her statements and opinions on the matter. Although I am unconnected to the video game industry, it actually happens to be my personal favorite form of entertainment... I find it to be the last bastion of "creative freedom" in many ways and I hope it doesn't fall into this model. It would really suck for gaming altogether. :(
I use to play gran turismo 3 A-spec with my dad has a kid and when we had online access. I modded my viper and I probably had one of these fastest vipers in the game. We use to do 1/4 races on this one track and I lost once to another viper. I miss that game so much
I do both digital and physical games with purchases. I prefer physical (I am almost 50 so definitely an age thing for me) because the type of game I play primarily are single person and I make sure that there is an offline way to play the game on my ps5 or switch. I do however purchae digital games mainly for something that is mostly an online game like Helldivers 2, searching and buying a physical copy of that game makes no sense as the game is solely an online affair. These are the ways that I determine whether or not I am going to search out a physical copy
The biggest problem about the Physical and Digital sales is that they count microtransactions and dlc as digital sale. So even people buy vbucks are contributing to that graph. However with this topic I will say this if your selling a digital game it should be atleast 40 bucks or so. Because the production of the disk and case are not being used. And if a collector wants a physical copy then put all the content on the actual disc. There shouldn't be a reason why only 100 megabytes are on a 128 gb bluray disc
The reason PC games have moved on is because Steam 1) allows you to back up your digital games and 2) your games often aren’t locked to a specific “generation” like consoles. For instance a lot of games will be updated from Windows 8 to 10 to 11. And those many older PC games will still run if updated.

Wait until AI scrubs everything that has a connection to the internet

Thank you for saying this. I get so sick of people spreading that falsehood around.

I don't have a problem with going all digital provided that its contingent on two things:

Physical games from back in the day are really different than games now. You didn't need internet for those games what so ever. Also the fact that you didn't buy 100+ physical games back in the day is another factor.

Completely agree.
Playstation always has sales on their digital games.
No discs no logistics no profit sharing with the store that sells it. If a physical game is 80 digital version should be 20
I used to be mainly PC gamer and am used to the digital only sales.
The day physical Games stop being made is the day I stop buying modern games
It might be interesting to see more home brew physical games or the continuing growth of the indie retro system market like Evercade, etc… there always will be demand for physical and it will always continue to exist in some way.
Is there a list somewhere with the Switch games that require downloads to be playable?

The people pushing that false information are those who hate physical games and can't wait for the day that games are only sold digitally.
Exactly. Doesitplay's website has 69% of the 302 PS5 games they tested as playable straight from the disc with no internet/patches required. Will the games be more buggy and have worse performance? Probably, but still playable.

RGT have you seen the original halo 2 servers on the OG Xbox were brought back by the community?
Definitely would love to see a video on remastered GT4 , this is the first I've heard about it.
What about cartridges 🤔
@@fredd_g5880
Oh, your cartridges will work. You just have to blow on them.
This is 100% false.
@@hellibossmy original Xbox and GameCube don’t agree with this statement
You've just made me realize that I've been bamboozled...🙁...and I'm more sad now for several reasons...😔💯✔️
You gotta make the GT4 video pleassseee. YOU just got me so excited to get the remastered also
Shawn: We joke a lot in you comment section.
If kids don't care, why do they drive the recent revival in vinyl record sales?
Hidden gem = auto inflation...thanks MJ
He didn’t invite you because he knew you would just ramble through his whole video trying to get to that 10 minute mark forgetting that you weren’t making one of your videos but was a guest on his.
Given RGT made this about emulation once again when MJR's video had nothing to do with that, MJR made the correct decision.
Ok, I'll be positive about digital. I am positive that I have to worry more about losing access to my digital games, moreso than my physical games
@@Veganerd_Interesting, I remember Sierra from those point-and-click adventures. Collecting can be a nice hobby, just not my cup of tea.
Rgt is 🔥
Is your iQ in the single digits?
You are a Nintendo CZcamsr!! lol
Duh!
I left physical for awhile, I used to collect, there are many reasons to leave, as many to collect, but disc should stay, so who you go to press these discs in 2024?
Your IQ is obviously below 70.
If we go totally digital, I'm done, I'm out. There's no point owning a console.
As a gamer who spends £1000s a year on physical games, they lose my custom. I'll be back to retro, playing my backlog.
MetalJesusSux he's a grifting SOB
As a proud retro gamer of 30 years this ''all digital future'' doesn't affect me. I'm just sitting here laughing and watching the video game industry destroy itself. I was a Sega Mega Drive kid back in 1993 and still a Sega Mega Drive kid in 2024 so Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo can all screw themselves with their online servers, digital downloads and licensed rental service.
You two need to finish this in the wrestling ring!!!!
Anyone make any videos about this?
my view on physical vs digital has changed due to the physical not having anything on the disc anymore anyway and still having a large download on day 1.
Rgt if you don't sell your stuff, how can I legally get it? So me taking it is fine
For now at least, the majority can play offline from the media so there’s that but there are more and more that require an online check that I’m unsure about
Can't beat physical.
I'm thinking I'm going to start hitting up my local Facebook market place and buy my cities 3DS', Wii's, Wii U's and games and start stockpiling physical media so I have something to play in the future!
Wise decision!
You failed to mention the part in the video where they discussed the Vectrex.
Lets not forget that there are digital only consoles that skew the perspective on this as well
I’m old enough to remember buying a game and reading the instruction manual on the way home. Sadly, those days are long gone. The only reason to buy physical copies are for censorship issues that will happen in the near future.
MOST games on Switch and PS5 can be played offline from what's on the cart/disc
I miss that game so much
I like your perspective on the topic Metal Jesus should’ve definitely had you on that video bro.
What can I say, I just like seeing a shelf full of games and DVDs. It brings me peace.
