- I have been enjoying these watercolor markers a lot lately. All you do is sketch and then soften the lines with a wet brush. If you find you have a hard time getting the ink to move try a different paper. I have good luck with the following:
Arches cold pressed shrsl.com/357tj
Hahnemulhe Cezanne Cold Pressed amzn.to/3yPjkoh
Fabriano Stufio hot pressed (Budget friendly!) shrsl.com/355l1
*Any watercolor paper, bristolor mixed media paper with a heavy sizing should also work so test what you have.
The markers I am using are the Winsor & Newton Promarkers, they are availiable in sets or open stock: shrsl.com/355kx
I'll post my reference photo on my Instagram and blog tomorrow.

I use my phone and iPad quite frequently for reference. Also sometimes I’ll have a lesson pulled up on my iPad and follow from there. So nice that we have these devices so handy around the house. Those look like they’re fun to play with.
I was gifted a set of the old markers awhile back and I haven't used them because I didn't know how. Now I'll feel more confident to give them a try. Yay!!Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Thank you for the way you used the markers as the tool they were designed for and not just a watercolor container like other CZcams artists! By goin directly onto the paper with the markers is the way they were intended to be used, not so much scribbling on a pallet then dipping a wet brush in it as you would tubed and caked watercolors are used. Excellent video!
Thank you! Have you tried the Faber Castell watercolo markers? They are fantastic too!
I love how you explain colors and how you let me know what items are worth the price and what are not. I also enjoy your snapchats.
Thanks for tipping your page to show how you used the waterbrush, this looked effortless.
I am loving your recent videos! Using different mediums ....appreciated and thank you!
Oh dear I just threw out some nice thick socks with big toe holes. That’s a clever idea. I used to use a sock to protect my hand in the olden times when I had to polish my shoes. Another great idea. Loved this thistle and I use my phone to record inspiration all the time. Thanks
Yup...just finished a doggie portrait commission...kept image on the Google Drive, and could paint from it on my tablet or phone! Love being able to zoom in!
I learn so much watching you and hearing your description. ! Gorgeous!! Thank you
I always always use my phone for reverence pics. Everyday. Even when my printer had ink I would still use my phone. There are times I wish I had a print of whatever I’m working on though. I have to sketch everything by hand and when using opaque mediums it’s hard to color match. Those are my only two complaints using my phone for reference material.
Oh! Another way I use my phone for reference pictures is by taking screen shots of movies or TV shows. Some have THE BEST cinematography and if I pause just right I can get some bee-you-tee-ful pictures. Obviously I can't sell anything from those pictures but I can practice in my sketchbook.
Wow! Amazing. I wish I had even a fraction of your talent. Thank you for sharing.
you are BRILLIANT! I have wondered how to get a picture on my phone to stay longer than 30 seconds. Thanks to you I have found the function that allows me to change my setting to 30 minutes. WOW..Thanks.
Loved this! I also use my phone or iPad to look at my reference, it does make life easier on the go or out of the studio. In fact I was just doing a butterfly on Queen Anne’s Lace with my Inktense pencils at the kitchen island.
I use my phone and sometimes my Kindle for reference photos. Such a handy tool!
You are one of the best instructor how to use markers, pencils properly. 20:13 I use masking tape surface to blend them, I had learned that trick from you, actually.
That’s pretty. I’m going to do this one with watercolor pencils. Thanks for the inspiration.
That's what I did. WC pencils are the best.
This is beautiful. I love the texture.
Never thought of using my phone because it goes to sleep but now I know. I was going to make prints.
Very fun project! I think I have the perfect markers for it! Thanks for posting this.
Thank you Lindsay, I made this with watercolors and it was really fun
Such a sweet thistle. Random internet advice on photographing flowers. I attended a lecture for gardeners given by a pro nature photographer. Either take your photos in early morning or late afternoon, or (best). On an overcast day. Bright sunlight will seriously wash out color. Some of my best flower photos were taken in between rain showers on a gloomy day. Now if you are familiar enough with your paints and your subject, it might not make a difference to you as an artist.
Great advise! Thank you.
I like this very much before the water..so pretfy!!! Might try with markers and then again with water! Such a pretty little flower!
This is absolutely gorgeous! I wouldn’t have believed how easy it looked if I hadn’t watched you do it. Now, one of these days I’ll try it and we’ll see just how delusional I am. 😝
Wow
Omg I love thistles (and weeds in general). They are gorgeous with their wild blooms and love tutorials on the same. I painted a hideous thistle a while back, from my phone too, time to improve on it based off this tutorial. Thank you 🙏🏽
I had to stop partway through watching and then pick back up later. I love thistles shape and color and how I almost always see bees or butterflies on them!
Thank you for a wonderful, sweet video! And everything else you do !!
Thank you so much. I haven’t been brave enough to give my w c markers a try as I was not sure how this technique works. I am a fusion paper card artist. This subject would be great. Thanks for the inspiration. Marjorie from Georgia US 🦋🌈
This is so excitingly timely! My shipment of the new WnN pro markers are out for delivery as we speak!!!!
So beautiful! What a gorgeous card or little framed piece this would make. I just love botanicals. Yes, I use my cell phone and a bird book when I’m out camping and painting. Makes it easier for me to see differences and highlight/shadows since my eyes aren’t that great and I’m a very slow painter. Takes some of the stress off. Thanks as always Lindsay!
Very pretty! Thanks for the tip on displaying phone photos longer!
Absolutely love this in every way!!! Please do more!!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Loved watching you do this. I have let the thistle grow on my property and get more every year. The birds and bees really like it.
i love when you do tutorials like this! thanks Lindsay😍😍
Very pretty! Thanks Lindsay!
I love this thistle, especially because it has no busy background. Saving it to try once I receive markers. Thanks so much for sharing! 😻
Loved this Lindsay, turned out so beautiful. I think thistles get a bad rap, but are very useful to our winged friends. Thanks for painting this. I'm going to give it a go.
Farmers see them as "the enemy" though because they can overtake hay fields or crops. They can become quite noxious, if left uncontrolled.
The thistle seed for birds is nyjer seed and is sterilized to keep it from becoming problematic.
@@olderendirt yes
They are good for humans as well. They are edible and delicious. They are in the same family as the artichoke. Artichokes are expensive and labor intensive to eat. These are free and easy. Collect the stems, eat raw or steamed, blanched, fried, you name it.
Cracks me up people will pay to dollar for food from a store, but won't pay the walk to their yard to get it for free.
GORGEOUS!
The only green capped waterbrushes I have are ohuhu. The ones from Dollar Tree and the art store (pretty sure it was Hobby Lobby, but might have been Michael's) are clear. The ones that don't tend to drip on their own are the Ohuhu ones. The others I have to watch and dry where the bristles are first exposed from the plastic to avoid dripping on the paper.
My brain now wants to draw Eeyore on the page beside the thistle because my tired brain remembers he loved thistle. Sometimes the random leaps my mind takes with silly, useless trivia can be at least amusing. On the bright side, I now have two things to draw I didn't before the video.
Do the Ohuhu waterbrushes suck pigment back into the reservoir? I only have three, a Pentel Aquwash, a Niji, and a Caran D'ache ( which I can't find.) The Niji's tip is frayed and the Pentel sucks pigment back into itself when I squeeze it.
Beautiful as always! ♥️♥️♥️
Loved this! I use a lot of water based markers and got a lot of technique ideas to try. Thanks!
These might be good for watercolor under paintings, for soft pastels. 🤗 thanks!
This is beautiful. Thanks for all the good info and for sharing
The flower of Scotland 🏴
This is so beautiful, thank you for sharing!
This looked great, so gonna give this a go with my water colour inks. Love how vibrant these Windsor pens are.
So pretty! 💗
Thistles are so pretty. I know probably not many people appreciate them but, I like them. They are also good for your liver and are used to make cheese. I will have to give this one a try. Thanks for the inspiration.
I can’t wait to try this with my Karin markers! Thanks for the lovely session!
Hey! I might be able to actually 'draw' this! hahaha...I will try! Goodness knows I've got watercolor markers :-) Thanks Lindsay!
This painting reminds of the painting on the brown Strathmore watercolor tablet!! Beautiful, thank you!❤️
Beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing Lindsey!
I often use my phone for reference : ). love this x
LOVED this. Liked seeing you use the watercolor markers. Came out beautiful.
Great tutorial! I’m ready to try this technique out. Thank you!
I take lots of pictures with my phone so I can use them later. Good tip about taking multiples!
So cute!!
Very impressed with how these Winsor & Newton watercolor markers performed in this painting. You did an amazing job Lindsay, the thistle painting turned out beautiful!
How wonderful it was to watch you from beginning to the finished flower. I am very partial to this flower and have loved it always. To explain this is my maiden name. So beautiful.
I hit the send button before I was finished😳! Your painting is so bright and beautiful! Thank you for all of you wonderful videos and lessons.
I used to carry a foldable light reflector, the kind that spring open when you twist it? Silver on one side white on the other, It works great for backgrounds for flowers or insects and it gives you light to enhance your portrait photos if you have the occasion to take them. Wonderful thistle painting, this video is full of tip for working with these markers too! Thank you Lindsay. Be safe out there and enjoy the rest of your day.
That sounds awesome! I wonder if they still have them...
@@melissaaldosari8024 You should check B&H photo online and see if it would be in the photography equipment department
Gorgeous 😍
Beautiful!!
Hi Lindsay, really like those markers, thanks for sharing with us. Adding to my list of things to get, it's just neverending 😂. Love it!
Isn't it, though! Between the "want monster" and "full set syndrome" I'm doomed!
😆
I love this 😍 thanks for the tutorial 💜🌿🙋
This is beautiful, Lindsay!
Beautiful! You make it look so easy, I might try watercolor, I've always loved the look.
So beautiful! I really love it. Thank you for sharing
Very beautiful, gorgeous u do amazing work I ❤️ it
Very inspiring. I’ll give it a go tomorrow with the watercolor markers I have. I’m always hesitant with markers bc of the heavy dark lines. Thanks for encouraging as always… 🙂
This turned out so beautiful 😍 I love it I’m gonna have to try it!
Love this
This is so pretty, I love these markers I like to use them for cards but I will try this for sure. I hope you have a fun weekend!! Thank you
Love bull thistle
Love this am definitely going to try it! I appreciate that you use all the different mediums. I have a set of tombows I never use anymore since I started using water color paint. But I miss how easy these are!
Very pretty! I like it very much!
I wish I could return all of my alcohol markers and buy a few of these light-fast ones. Oh well. Sketchbooks like color too. Thank you for sharing more loveliness.
I love using alcohol markers too, it's a pity they aren't lightfast but all my art is seen online nowadays and I rarely sell originals so I'm fine with it.
Beautiful!! I take photos with my phone for reference. I try to get different angles. It’s hard to get sometimes due to the 🌬, but for sketching , it’s not bad!! Thank you for sharing!!!
This is beautiful 💕💕 I have the markers and now need to break them out and give it a try!!
Have fun!
Love the thistle. Beautiful Lindsay. TFS. I use my phone to take reference photos. Many of my neighbors have given me permission to take photos. So fun. Never heard of the W & N markers, great tips.
Beautiful 🥰
Your phone is lovely! I went from a nice chunky Note 4 to a galaxy A70 and the drop in size really plays havoc with my wrists - I've never had cramp in my life til I got this phone! 😖
This video was so relaxing to watch, thank you. 😊
I use my tablet mostly but for larger sizes I get a cheap color copy. Your thistle turned out great.
Beautiful painting, Lindsay! I would love to see the picture you took of the moth maybe on your blog? Maybe you'd like to paint it :) no pressure though. Tfs.
I just came across your site…your a good teacher…I swear some people don,t have the voice for it…you do. I hope you keep teaching
I,m a. Special Ed teacher and your a natural…so big praise so go to much to your head but somebody should tell your head…I,m going to paint something tomorrow….it,s winter here…how do paint snow? thank you, Linda Alakwskina
I have some snow and winter painting tutorials:)
Awesome 👌
Thank you for the lovely inspiration tonight. I used Kimberly watercolor pencils for my thistle tonight and I added a bee. I did it on a Strathmore Creative Card, which come in a 100 box for about $20. Out of my WC pencils, that set has strong pink and purple selection. I love using my phone or tablet for reference.
I'll have to check that product out!
I dont have any watercolor markers but for awhile i was looking on Amazon at the old version of WN watercolor markers. You make everything look so easy, peasy...lol great video. Thanks for sharing💙💚♥️
They had deals for a while there!
I constantly take reference photos with my phone. I love to take close ups of one or 2 flowers in my garden over several days and from different angles so when I paint - not often enough - I can make my own scene with many flowers in different stages. Make up my own "dream" garden. This year I've gotten a lot of different fungi, I think the wet weather has helped. I want to try a series of different mushroom and lichen or moss on tree bark.
I laughed when you said you wouldn't "use" that box the pens came in - I think you meant not for the pens- I"ll bet we'll see it used in a shaker card or something else! Also that shiny clear plastic works for shrinky dinks. I trace 2-3 inch coloring book images with a sharpie and the Grand kids color them in. I know the fumes are toxic but they are really quick - about 2 min. _ in the oven then I leave the oven open with my exhaust fan running. The kids know we don't do them if it's rainy or too humid because they don't seem to exhaust as well, dry air is much better.
Good idea!
Again your showing variety in color as it gives a better representation. By the way I have always liked botanicals and florals! We have the Hunt Library for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh which is near me. I would love to go there one day!
Sounds like a great place!
Nice 💙🧡💚🧡😍this is making me smile 💛 great video
Hey Lindsey, I just ordered a set of 12 to try and can't wait to get them. You make it look like so much fun! I didn't see your palette in your "show more" section. Perhaps it's in youir Amazon favorites. Love the thistle--it is gorgeous. You have a delicate touch with the pens allowing for such fine thistle tips. I, on the other hand, tend to make mine too thick without enough variety. But I'm workin' on it. Ha. I didn't even know W-N had these markers. I have many ProMarkers with alcohol ink and just love them. The tips you imparted to us, the audience, are so very helpful. Thank you. XOXOJane
Yes, it's in my amazon store. A ceramic dish will work just as well too:)
Thanks Lindsay. I didn't realize that you could reactivate watercolor markers on the paper! I thought once it's on the paper and dried, like a watercolor it pretty much stays put . I Only use my phone for reference photo or tutorials. I don't have any space for my notebook/tablet on my desk .😁💜
Coooooool!
Thanks
What a fun and pretty tutorial Lindsey, thank you. I have watercolor pencils that I'll be using to try these techniques with. Thanks for the tip about using a paper towel. I wish I could find a porcelain palette dish that has a textured base since I use watercolor pencils and Inktense pencils to do watercolors. Using color swatches from paper seems wasteful sometimes.
I can't wait to try this Thistle Lindsey.
Use a strip of masking tape. The texture grabs the pigment but lifts clean off with a brush.
😻😻😻
Good reference video
To keep your screen awake, go to settings and it should be listed under display or screen. I would google it and get steps to walk you through but it is possible. Beautiful piece!
For iPhones. Settings > Display and Brightness > Auto Lock
I have a set of these and sadly I haven't used them yet. I can't remember when I got them but they are not labeled as "Promarkers", just W&N water colour markers. I need to break them out and use them.
They recently revealed them
Lovely rendition Lindsay. I have that same palette, I use it for water media and inks, I love it. I think it’s by Meeden.
PS: Huge dog fan here, would love to see a picture of your dog, perhaps you could paint him for us 🙂
I have, I think it was February 2020 or there abouts
@@thefrugalcrafter Oh great, I shall gave a look to see if I can locate it. Thank you.
Found it, for anyone interested the painting is June 2020 Dog laying in the sun.
