    I have been working on this for over a year and what I have found that helps me is When in “practice” not hunting… I have a limit to my process. I know that if I say my mantra 2 times and it hasn’t gone off I let down. I work to try and have fewer let downs each time. Definitely concentrating on letting go surprise shots instead of hitting the center. I also purchased a carter evolution20 and set it deep. Making it a struggle to go off. I switch back and forth between the carter and my wise guy index and it seems to be working great. I shot a 3D tournament last weekend and only forced 1 shot the whole day. Love watching you guys and seeing that it’s not just me having to work at this everyday.

    Every year, after the last deer season or whatever the last hunt I go on is, I go straight back to basics. Work on pulling and back tension up close, go through the whole process over. And then start extending range. Even if I feel like I might take a step back half way through the year I will go back a couple of steps and refresh, gain control then get back after it. 3 finger Carter insatiable is what I shoot

    I'm a trad recurve archer through and through, but I enjoy your videos man. There is a lot of crossover between our two disciplines. I realize punching the trigger is alot like me yanking my arm back when the arrow lines up where I want it to be on my recurve. I punch a string and this made something click for me that has been negatively affecting my groupings for a long time. Appreciate your content man, keep it up! My largest obstacle was a frayed infraspinatus tendon in my bow arm that hurt me for the last 1.5 years before I finally rehabbed it up to this point. Now it's perfecting small form and building up endurance on my 50lb bow.

    A super important part of this getting AWAY from true punching any release is to have it set up for you. This can and should take a lot of time because there are so many variables. Eventually you can/will find what works best to achieve a “CONTROLLED SHOT CYCLE”, not a command style but controlled from the moment you set your feet in the right position. There are many videos to learn various release set ups-Josh Bowmar, “ bow only outdoors “, nock on with John Dudley.?? There many vids on how to retrain your mindset.

    Awesome video Dan. Im a huge fan..
    I just wanted to share some issues ive encountered shooting in town, in my yard.
    Long story short.. im not allowed to anymore because of the neighbors concerns and the bylaw in my town.
    But my advice is you never know..
    What im getting at is the section of fence you have just behind the targets.. id recommend adding a higher addition to that section of the fence so it protects the house behind it and the windows..
    Just incase. If somwthing happens even being a pro it would be the end of your shooting in your yard.
    Youll wish you had that extra protection above the top fence line.. even just 30ft..
    From left to right adding on some height to the fence.
    I would just hate to see you not be able to shoot in you yard, cause it pains me that I'm not allowed to, it
    sucks.
    Love your videos. Keep em coming.

    For new shooters trying to learn the concept of pull with your rombloid muscles get true ball element it works off of holding weight and how much pressure you aply with the back muscles there is no way to punch this release and it is in my opinion the best target archery release ever made it can only be fired by pulling into the draw stops of the bow so there’s no worries about staying active on a thumb botton or hinge release you can shoot those like the element but it requires more dicaplin watch some videos on it and check it out I’m going to be shooting it at Lancaster 2023 watch the 15 to 17 class shoot downs I’ll be there shooting that release and I want to do a shoot off with bodie I believe I’m one of the only 15 year olds able to keep up with him so we’re going to find out in a few months

    I think we should all agree that shooting at a target is nothing like shooting at an animal. Obviously practicing on targets is necessary but it isn’t real life. Surprise release is great when working on perfect form and if you only shoot at foam or bags…go for it. But continuously saying that forcing the trigger to go off when you need to is essentially committing an “Ultimate Sin” is crazy. In high gusty winds having more control of when the shot goes off is essentially. When an animal is moving especially in tight quarters or in a small window setting off the shot is essential. But only ever practicing to squeeze and wait for surprise is only teaching how to never deal with situations that won’t allow success using that method. I’m all for practicing great form, but I’m also a “Plan for the worst, Hope for the best” kinda guy. Could I win a 3d shoot maybe not. But I’ll be damned if anyone can out execute me in hunting situations.

    • @TheHYENA87
      @TheHYENA87 Před 2 lety +4

      I completely agree. 100 percent with everything you said. Target range bs is what I say...it's always more money...more programs...beat panic....don't ever punch.....you could punch your trigger ever single time and be the best hunter in the world...you could also take every class, spend every cent on every single new Mathews bow every year and still suck at killing game. The fact is none of this has to do with hunting. I haven't won any 3D shots either...but my elk wall can do the talking.

    • @ElkShape

      @@ElkShape thanks for the reply. But in the video Dan talks about forcing the release to fire in Alaska. Yet you guys never talk about preparing for a situation when that is necessary. The honest truth is that when shooting an animal its almost always necessary. Most animals don't stop moving for very long. I'm not bashing you guys. I think you put out great content and I love the show.

    I feel like people learn to be trigger punchers early on because when they start archery they are drawing too much weight and their shoulders aren't strong enough to really keep the bow up and steady on target, and as a result they learn to have accuracy with a drive-by smash technique with all of that massive float going on.

  • @ukjw2
    @ukjw2 Před 9 měsíci

    Mine got so bad in high school that I would dry fire a bow if I drew it without an arrow.
    It improved to simply jerking the trigger 3-10 inches below the target. I got good at popping up my bow and and hitting my target, roughly. Then I wounded 2 deer in a row. Took a new job and havn’t pulled a bow back since
    Gonna get back into it next year if I can get this under control.

    I’ve been practicing this surprise release and I’m struggling to find a happy medium. Sometimes I focus too much on making sure it’s a surprise and my shot is not accurate. I’ve filmed myself and I’m not a trigger puncher and I do better when I tell myself “just do it.” I already have the skills I just have to find a happy medium with making it go off quickly and making it a surprise release.

    • @Logan-ky3ot
      @Logan-ky3ot Před 2 lety +1

      Ok so what they mean is controlled surprise shot they want you to stay active on your release but not slap the trigger me personally I shoot indoor archery a lot you have to learn how to keep a active shot but not control it by slapping the trigger I shoot a trueball element it’s a pressure release you draw with the safety pulled back like you would shoot a thumb button but when you let go of the safety it works of pressure you pull by trying to touch your shoulder blades together and the pressure loads up and the release fires

    I am working on everything. Even with a newer bow than the one that I have used for 14 years I am still not a better shot, a better archer. Yes I know that better equipment doesn’t make one more skilled.
    I shoot a single hook 🪝 index finger style release. It’s definitely an improvement over the cheap extremely light set Cabela’s double caliper release that I use to rattlesnake.
    I try really hard not to just punch it once my pin comes across the dot on the target, but to keep it up and out there, hold on target and make that conscious decision to shoot. Not to just fire the first time my pin reaches the target 🎯
    I plan on taking Joel’s online course when I can budget the money for it.
    I want to build my own arrows for this season as well. 🏹
    I want to be consistently great out to 60+ before I try and go after pronghorn with my bow. I can get within 40 on elk and deer 🦌 with a lot of patience and planning, but where pronghorn live in the wide open it’s difficult to get close shots when not sitting water in a blind.

    It's always best to start this training process early, I have had to retrain myself over a number of years to get away from punching the trigger because I used to be so bad about it. What Dan said is pretty accurate. You can punch the trigger for a while and do great, but eventually it'll catch up to you.

    I picked up target panic of punching from shooting trap . Trap you learn to shoot as soon as you see the target come into view. Archery is more atune with rifle shooting. So I began to get a .22 magnum with a rifle scope,place the cross hairs on the target and noticed I was even punching the riffle trigger. Thats when I understood it was the acquiring of the sight picture that was setting my mind to fire. So I began to practice cross hairs into the bull,holding it there, and controlling the trigger and squeezing slowly until the gun went off.
    Went to the bow, and reaized the same issue. Practiced drawing,finger behind the trigger,into the bull,and was jumping out of the bow wanting to shoot. Took deep breaths to relax,counted to 10,then 20,then 30. Eventually for as long as I could hold @ full draw,locked into the bull. Never shot, let down,finger still behind the trigger.
    Next I worked on pin into the bull with finger on the trigger. Controlling the trigger to not shoot. Telling myself, that bull is not getting away like a clay target,relax,enjoy being in the middle of the bull. move the pin all around the bull. 12 o'clock,6 o'clock,3 o'clock,9 o'clock. Let down, no shot. Over and over and over again,always letting down by moving the finger back behind the trigger.
    Eventually, my mind began to accept the fact that the bullseye isn't getting away,not need to panic and shoot it quick.
    I believe there's all sorts of TP. Caused by variable things. I analyzed my own. I think each shooter should examine their own to find just WHERE in the cycle of draw,hold ,shoot your lies in. I found where mine is. I get to the spot and come out of my shoes.

    I don't quite understand why you need to be surprised by the shot. I'm a trigger pucher and shoot very controlled even out to 70 yards. Any suggestions?

      Joel used the term controlled.. basically just don’t be a trigger slapper

    A surprised slow pull through shot doesn’t work for me it causes me to hold low on target and make bad shots because I’m waiting and waiting for shot to break in the mean time my whole process is breaking down and the pin starts dropping

    Shoot often.. like a Fuccn lot!! Lower poundage, close your eyes at a close bag.. feel what your tool really is. Then shoot more and more. Accuracy beats power every time, especially anything over 40 yards

    My Target Panic came from shooting too many arrow in a session. I started releasing early as my pin gets close to the white or yellow....Curious question; Did you try shooting at a full size or close to paper photo of an Elk.

    Recently started archery, found out I’m cross eye dominate and I’m debating whether trying to stick it out with the rh bow I have, or fully committing to to a left handed bow. I can shoot both ways it just feels a little weird with my left but they come out feeling good.

    I just don’t understand the surprised shot because of the pin float that will happen, especially 60+ yards. I may be a trigger slapper but I time it with the motion of the pin float. Never had a coach though but it seems to work decent
