I bought the same NAD C538 refurbished, and it has played every disc I've thrown at it. It has never skipped, or stopped , and does start up right away. Even the Burned CD's that I made that were gapless. I just wished it had a bigger remote. Great review!
Yeah it's a great CD player for sure, mine has done something kind of funny twice since I've had it and maybe you've noticed the same thing. Once in awhile if I turn the power off without hitting the stop button while a disc is playing, the disc will keep spinning in the tray . And you can tell it's still spinning in the tray because you can hear it scraping against the plastic tray. Has yours ever done this?
Well that's good, and it's only done it literally twice in the thousands of times I've played CDs, and a lot of times I'll get busy with something and need to turn off the hi-fi and instead of pressing stop and then power to turn it off I'll simply just hit the power. I mean I ain't worried about it I just thought since you had one I'd ask you, thanks
Well you know Yamaha makes their CD player that perfectly fits the as501 however it isn't gapless, unless you go to the website and download the update that makes it gapless.
@Audiorevue I'm buying a new CD player because my Yamaha CD-S300 has tray and laser problems. I figured I would buy a new player, but stay away from the Yamaha CD-S303 you reference. It's probably going to be the NAD, which is cheaper than the Yamaha.
Well the biggest thing for me with the NAD is besides obviously the gapless, is the fact that it loads quick and it plays quick and it responds quick. Honestly there's nothing I hate more than putting a CD in a CD player and waiting 30 to 40 seconds for the thing to load. Couple of years ago I had a really high-end Sony ES CD player from the middle 2000s, I forget the model. Anyway I bought it off eBay and the guy said it was refurbished and it played fine and sounded fantastic however when you put a CD in sometimes it would take almost a full minute before it would play, and that is a huge pet peeve of mine when it comes to CD players. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the NAD, I know I'm not.
@carravagio16 I am looking at that player. I think it has gapless playback, but I am seeing multiple complaints that the player stops playing when it gets to the middle and/or towards thevend of CDs, and I wonder if that's why it's on sale at Crutchfield.

@@Audiorevue I have never had that problem.Works flawless, maybe because it was refurbished? they might have gone thru everything twice.

Oh, and so you know, I have the Yamaha A-S501 Integrated Amp and the SVS Prime Bookshelf Speakers (6.5 Woofer).

@@Bartholomew60 I would also take a hard look at the Rotel A11 Tribute player, Ken Ishiwata designed
