I stick with recreational diving. I don't want to exceed no decompression limits. Plus, tech diving requires more training, time, and gear. Not to mention money. Great video, James. I consider myself a very safe cautious diver.

I’m a recreational diver too and have had an unpleasant experience with a buddy that was teamed with me and the thought of entering a overhead environment scares the crap out of me.

I just finished Simon Pridmore's Scuba Professional and it was a great insight to the business side of the scuba industry. Defo taught me I'd rather be on the recreational side rather than the business side and gave me so much more respect for those working in the industry! Looking to finish the rest of the books in his scuba series!

Awesome .You hit it out of the park.Check your ego was spot on.And your final tip about choosing a Technical iInstructor was well put.My Instructor was amazing.The first thing he said was that if you don't do the skills to my satisfaction you will not pass my class.You are right,it is a mentor-ship .Did my Trimix last year and enjoyed it so much I did my Advanced Trimix this past summer.You want to see some amazing shipwrecks come up and go diving in the Great Lakes.

Really enjoyed both videos. Have just completed my Tec 40 with Padi using sidemount. The instructor Martin was brilliant. The experience was challenging, but rewarding. I actually believe that I am a better and more capable diver for doing this program. Looking forward to starting the Tec45 in the new year.

Did my advanced nitrox and decompression dive cert just before the lock down. The amount of maths involved did my head in at the start, just as well there are apps out there to help. The dives were awesome, the new skills and re visiting of the old ones made it all the more enjoyable. A great instructor, Rubens, who pushed me to find my limits made me more confident I'm sure.
This guy is a positive credit for our dive community.

Technical diving is something I want to learn and do. To that end I started to work with and dive with the equipment and further I have been getting information from the local tech divers. I also looked into diving doubles and discovered my back does not like the weight and my right hand cannot reach the tank valves. So, I am now a certified Sidemount diver and love it. While my skills from single tank backmount have been useful I am still training myself to use the Sidemount correctly. So, for now I am still an AOW recreational diver with Nitrox I have a goal for technical diving in future. This video really put things in perspective, thank you.

The $$$ and kit advice is spot on. I had to buy the entire kit again when I decided I wanted to go the tech way. The only things that are the same between my rec kit and tech kit are mask, backup torch and computer.
And as for the instructor, I was lucky enough to do my discover scuba in a small dive center with tight knit community that cares about their graduates. My advice for taking up tech diving is to look for a smaller dive center, which is much more likely to have a bunch of hardcore divers who take care of each other. Big centers often only care about their bottom line and it's more profitable to churn out 10 OWDs a week than it is to keep a handful of enthusiasts and guide them throughout the transition of becoming a tech diver.
I'm taking tec 40 now. Price is no joke.
Super video .... hang out with tech divers they will be patient with you and if you can take constructive criticism you can get there. Fortunately I got a good group of folks on that journey and they make it fun.

I read the requirements for TDI deco with advanced nitrox, and being a competent rec diver (diving most weekends for the last 5 years) I actually feel nervous about skill set. Planning to start in the spring, we'll see how it goes.
I want to do tec but know I have a long way to go before I can start, but we can all have our goals and mine are to learn sidemount and keep getting my dive numbers up while practising buoyancy control and for me importantly convert from a v12 gas guzzler. I am working on trim every dive I think I am quite good re not looking like a Xmas tree and I am very good at post analysis of my dives and accepting owning up to any mistakes working out what caused or contributed to the mistakes and what needs to be done to limit the chance of the same mistake happening again. So yep lots to work on who knows maybe in 2, 3, 4 or more years I might finally be ready.

In regards to Tech Diving I especially thank you as you have confirmed my suspicions that I absolutely am NOT at current an appropriate candidate for this level of my favorite hobby. The geekish element as well as sac rate have me excluded at this time. I will however continue to enjoy recreational diving as it not only serves as my yoga or primary form of distressing but it is great exercise as well. Again thank you for your insight and I await more wisdom.

I think two of the most importants things to go tek is not smoking and being fit, having a proper diet (none of these cost any money) and then money and time to get properly trained.
Think I’m Ready. I practiced holding my breath from 170 to 80 ft last weekend.
Wish all this info was as easily available when I was younger. The hurdle doesn’t seem as insurmountable as it once did. Still happy with my many years of rec ( and wreck) diving but were I to do it over I might chose the path least taken.

A question though. I'm an OWSI (so you know, kinda on a budget), but am really interested in tec diving! How does being a tech diver affect job-hunting and salary? Is there demand for tec divers? Also, would it be (financially) worth it to go all the way up to tec instructor? Thanks!
On small change to your advice...with the right instructor...your bouyancy control could be junk going in.... but it'll be good coming out! Can't do Tech without bouyancy.....

Where do you usually go for technical dives on your free time? For eg deep wrecks, caves, deep spots in open water?
I want to do technical diving someday, but I'm a newly certified recreational diver with a grand total of six dives under my belt. I'm gonna wait a few years (and probably 4-500 dives) before I give it a try. My bouyancy control is meh, I suck at mask skills, and I go through a 100 cubic foot tank in half an hour at 45 feet. I've got a long way to go.
Almost 3 years later… How are you doing with your dives?
I just started diving 3 months ago, I have around 20 dives. Eventually I too would like to start tec diving
@@hernancortes6575 Haven't been diving as much as I'd like to, mainly due to the costs of renting a drysuit (I live in a rather cold climate), though I'm planning on buying my own suit soon. The diving I have done has gone well, and I've been consuming a lot less gas as I have gotten more comfortable and smooth in the water.

@@Ze_das_couves Nope. Due to the prohibitive cost of drysuit rentals I haven't been diving anywhere near as much as I would have liked. I have plans to buy my own suit sometime this year, and once I do that I'll be able to do 1-2 dives a week at minimal cost.
Just put together my twinset. Apeks Tek 3 Regs, Apeks WTX Harness, and backplate. The wing is WTX-D 60R. Expensive is an understatement. Lol.

You mention breathing quite often in your videos. It's something I work on every time I dive, that and buoyancy are the two biggest things I work on.
My computer tells me my current PSI per minute usage but also at the end of the dive my overall PSI per minute.
I know that in one of your videos you made a little joke about if you can consistently breathe in for 6 seconds and out for 6... Go take your instructor exam. :)
But can you say what a good / solid PSI per minute looks like for an average, good, excellent and pro level diver?

Will be starting to learn tech dive, in November in Egypt at Camel Dive Centre, starting with Tech 40,45 and 50. I’ve not dived since 2014 so want to get diving before I start new courses, I’m both a MSD (I collect speciality’s) and have been a DM since 1999. What’s your view on CCR? Also I’m in Miami in October any local dive trips?

I have 4 dives under my belt. I never plan on being a tech diver. At this point my safe limit is the depth in which I can safely reach the surface, should I have to ditch my air. Which is about 100ft.

Holy shit I didn't expect myself to laugh this loud.
Tec diving is not simply about going deep, but a means of getting to where you need to go!
Example: Subic bay Philippines has amazing wrecks but most are out of recreational level,therefore tec skills are needed. If you want to go deep just to say you dove deep than its not for you! If that is the case just tie your computer and a lead weight to a long rope and throw it overboard and Waa La you have something to post on Facebook!
Tec/ Cave diving is for people that have a strong mindset, independent thinkers, passionate, alpha dogs and don't give up as nobody is going to guaranty your safety but yourself.

Hi there. Don't you think if a person has poor in-water skills they should look for a good instructor so they can learn proper behaviour and techniques? Further to the question, don't you think that seeking tec diving training is a great way to improve one's diving capabilities?
I just think it's very difficult to judge oneself based on a short video that a buddy filmed with a GoPro or Paralenz.
Also, if a person wants to progress into tec, shouldn't they invest in good equipment and get trained while using that specific equipment, as opposed to using split fins, snorkel, and jacket-style single-tank BCD?

A technical diving course is not a "gentlemen's course" per se, you can invest a considerable amount of money into it and fail to achieve qualifying standards, which means no certification and that's for a very good reason.

What are your thoughts on technical training for people that want the tech skills but to stay within a rec profile? e.g. taking GUE fundies or TDI ITT -- not getting into the deco stuff, but to obtain the training in proper finning and buoyancy? And if that's not the way to obtain those skills, what kind of instruction does one look for to get them?
Sean Walberg GUE fundies is a course that will kick your butt and is a very good investmenent. No matter where and with which instructor. Solid skills and not a guaranteed pass.
TDI ITT depends on the instructor.
So sad for all the agencies where you need to shop around for an instructor. GUE and its standardized system and high requirements for instructor has sorted all of this.
Hi Sean, thanks for watching. GUE guys will tell you GUE is the best. TDI guys will tell you TDI is the best. It's the same as rebreather owners... Every rebreather owner will tell you their's is the best, the only brand to dive, because they don't want to admit they spent $10k on something that isn't great. Same with Tec Instruction. Ultimately, the agency is not going to be in the water with you, the Instructor is. I know good and shitty Instructors for ALL agencies. As I said in this video, pick a few you're considering, give them a call and feel them out. Don't let the agency be the deciding factor. Hope this helps! James

I only brought up the agency as an example, was really more interested about your opinion of taking intro level technical training from a technical agency in order to build solid foundational skills since the recreational classes seem pretty weak there. I'm not currently interested in doing tech dives requiring deco or multiple gasses, but the finning and buoyancy they teach at the intro level seems idea. But as a technical instructor, what do you think of rec people taking those classes with no intents of progressing past intro?

Dear James, I would like to go into Tec diving eventually, however I know my limits. At this stage of my diving I feel like I cannot keep up with other divers regarding dive time since my air is out on a standard 18 m dive in 35 - 40 min. The other divers can keep going for the entire dive 50 - 60 min. Do you have any tips on how to manage and improve my breathing?
I may not be James, but experience and relaxation make a huge difference. If you can mentally "Zen Out" (note not "space out") while underwater .
After that, technique. Are you kicking like mad, or do your kicks "count".
Finally fitness, If you get out of breath walking up stairs it's probably a good sign you've got to put some work in this area. If you're routinely taking hour long runs or cycle journeys you're probably fine here.
Good buoyancy control and trim management helps you to be more effortless in the water and to make your propulsion or finning more efficient. I know that’s what I’ll be working on.
I'm new to diving but out of curiosity, do you pick and choose your students for the course? Have you ever turned down anyone or give them some kind of test/ dive with them before becomming their Tec dive instructor? Cheers
Hi Matthew, the answer here is yes, yes and yes. Ideally, I get to see students in the water, before I take them on to Tec. But I can also interview them over the phone and have them explain their diving experience. One of my favourite questions to ask is: 'Which area of your diving skills do you feel needs the most work?' And if they answer, 'Nothing. I'm a kick-ass diver!' Then they are not ready for Tec! They need to be able to self-assess and self-criticize in a realistic way. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching. James

And don't be afraid to look at other agencies. The quality of the instructor is far more important than which agency they're with. I was a PADI diver up till Rescue then switched to TDI for Sidemount, Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures because I ran into a group of very experienced tech instructors who just happened to be with TDI. Turned out to be a good choice. Once you get past the rec levels cross-certificication isn't a big deal as most instructors will know how training compares between agencies and will help fill in any gaps.

Hi Soham, Thanks for watching. Apart from the obvious answer of meeting the prerequisites for whichever Tec course you are looking at, I would offer:
1. Make sure you have the fundamental skills mastered.
2. You have comfort within and to the edges of your limits now.
3. Do as much diving as you can to gain experience.
4. You find an Instructor who teaches the way you like to learn.

The transition from OW to tech would be minimal, provided the OW Instructor had sold the correct equipment from the beginning. The gas calculations consist of basic division and multiplication only. You don't need to use helium provided your END is not affected by narcosis.
I don't know all the passed out drunks that I've seen are pretty horizontal.

I highly appreciate this video and it's also a great one but I don't think that you are completely right with the second point. You said that people aren't ready for technical diving if they can't execute a dive plan but if you are a IAC Deep Diver or a CMAS** you are allowed to dive 40 meters deep but you aren't a tec diver. Then, if you plan a 40 meter dive but recognize that your head is getting slow and you feel drunk at 35 meters you would change the plan and dive a bit higher you wouldn't have sticked to the plan but you could still be ready for tec because nitrogen poisoning can occur at 30 meter at one day and at 50 the other day. Hope you know what I mean👌
You see the problem here right? You might want to consider trimix at dives below 30 meters.
Specially if these dives are demanding and you may actually need a clear head.
Unfortunately many organizations still believe in deep air just to keep prices low and don't really put this in their curriculum until below 40 meters.
