- Thank you for stopping by! In this video, I'm working with only black and white paint and mark-making tools. Using black and white values helps you see the the incredible power of using the correct balance of value in your abstracts. I show you how I created my painting and discuss the importance of values.
PLEASE subscribe and give me a thumbs up to encourage me as I grow my channel.

LOVE what you're doing Cheryl!! I've become addicted to your channel. You've inspired me to step out of my safe little box and take some creative risk.
You are an excellent educator. I've learned so much from watching and listening to you. Thank you! ❤
that makes me so happy to hear. Art has been there for me many times. I remember once I was mad at someone getting ill with cancer and took it out on my canvas. The piece turned out really great as I feel I took risks, gave myself permission to step out and now I know that feeling.... I can't want to hear what you create!!!
What a joy! Delighted to have been brought to your channel via YT's infamous algorithms! Really special and the way you used written nudges or reminders or similar, was much appreciated. The one where you said 'Fixative needed later' or whatever your exact words were That was a lovely prescient thoughtful touch - so thank you once more.
Welcome aboard! THE ALGORITHMS were on my side!!! haha I love black and white and neutrals in painting and landscapes, so I really enjoyed doing this painting!!!
I like all 4 of the pieces Cheryl. Your demo was very inspiring and made my brain fire with ideas. LOL Love it when you provide your demos and talkovers. Being a beginner, I've learned a lot. Thank you!
You are so welcome. thank you for commenting!!!
Love these paintings Cheryl’ I do similar in fact to be honest i have them pasted into books around 20 images per book and lots of books! Around 20 and growing’ I also do collaged pieces as well, I use them to revisit as they can inform larger paintings for marks, design, etc. As they are just created from my mind and recollections of what I’ve seen in landscapes after each book I get a bit exhausted so take a gap, great work and thank you so much’
Wonderful! My next weeks video I talk about Antoni Tapies and how he has NINE volumes of his works. Your books sound incredible!!! I like that they inform larger pieces. THANK YOU for watching and commenting, it means a lot to me
Thank you for a very interesting subject, Value. Some say “line” is the most important in art composition, but I tend to think value is equally important. Value is best demonstrated by black and white, as you did in those elegant and effective paintings. In my early days as a photographer, I spent months just shooting in black and white. And I did the same in making my abstract paintings. Most of us are naturally attracted to colours. Nature is full of colours. It’s all full of colours on darker cloudy days as well. Thank you for sharing your video. Interesting. More black and white values.
I bought a camera and so want to learn to really use it in good photos.... might during the Christmas holidays!!! Thank you for your comment.... I appreciate your coming to my channel!!
@@CherylWilsonArt This time of the year could be a great opportunity to take photos because the light is, generally, at a lower level than in other seasons. It could work very well to highlight not only values but contrasts, too. If shooting for learning, try the same subject from a slightly different angle at different times of the day. Better still, different seasons. Claude Monet painted the same landscape scene several times to show the changes in different seasons. Please share your photos, too.
GREAT ADVICE!! I love this idea. I head to visit my dad and then my family so when return, I will dig out my camera for sure
Enjoy your videos and style of painting. I am an abstract artist too and really like watching how your intuition leads your work.
Thank you so much! Thank you for leaving such a kind comment!!! It is nice to met other abstract artists!!! This was an enjoyable video to create and so happy you enjoyed it
Love all of them! No 4 - I could stare at it all day - with the right music, it would take me far away. That little dot of pink in No 1 adds just the right touch. Never knew black/white could be so amazingly beautiful.
And you think that little daughter pink was actually come to speak I like it too I like all of them so it’s really interesting to know which ones people like I so much appreciate your comment but I was just makes my day when I see a comment from you
You are a great teacher, I love most that most is in real time, love those pictures they all remind me of a stormy sea, just great.
Thanks so much 😊 I love the water!!! The beach, sitting in a restaurant over looking a body of water, so completely love your comment on stormy sea!!! it fits111
De Paris, je viens juste de vous découvrir et j'ai avalé pas mal de vos superbes vidéos. Je fais du semi abstrait de paysages, mais vous me donner l'envie de passer carrément à l'abstrait. Je vous remercie pour votre générosité.
Your comment touched my heart. Thank you so much for first watching and secondly leaving a comment. It truly makes me smile.
Thank you for sharing!! I love all your work.
Thank you so much Sue!!

I loved nos 3 & 4 the most
Oh good!!! I could do landscapes all day
Hi Cheryl 👋. I love these, all of them. Understanding more about values now too so I’m going to try this for sure. Tx and hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving. From Canada.
So happy that you enjoyed this video and are tackling value. It is a concept that if you get it under your belt, it will forever stay with you and will really make a difference in your abstracts so thank you for leaving a comment. I really appreciated it means a lot to me.
I love the combination of teaching throughout and some time that you just let the background music play and we watch you paint!
I so much appreciate your comment and support to my channel. Sometimes it’s hard to be quiet and just let the music play but I do my best!!!! again thank you so much for your support to my channel
Love these all been experimenting with B&W
Isn’t black-and-white just phenomenal and just a lot of fun to work with. Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate you stopping by my channel and taking that time to leave me a comment.
I’ve just noticed they’re on plywood Cheryl, I use these cheaper than buying canvases I can get 16 x12”x12” squares from a sheet I’ve also started to do my larger paintings on board too’ as over here art supplies are always expensive
I love how the different medium you paint on give you such different results. Boards are so much fun, the canvas panels are fun too. I love canvas and even raw canvas, but yes, it all adds up. Where did you say you were from?
@@CherylWilsonArt I’m from England a village called Brandon just 3 miles from Durham city north east England I’m 68 yrs started painting at 62 so a bit late in life and do so daily in my studio ( garden shed 10ft x8ft) my problem seems at times to be I try lots of things but need a body of work on similar tract I love your videos Cheryl and they give me a lot of help, I have a Facebook page showing my work but thats about it’ x
we ALL are all over the place for a bit. But once you find your place you love to keep painting in you feel like a huge "thing" happened. I remember when I found what I love the most and only then could I turn down all the other "noise" I had a friend that just started painting and she kept telling to try this and try that (she had an unlimited art budget!!) and I told her I needed to hone in on my own journey and that I could not try all the "things" but keep getting more narrow. It was recently she came back to me and announced she found her journey and completely understood what I was saying. It is important to try many things, but for me, it was a real eye opener to take only a few of those new things into my journey ..... but that takes time. I am 68 next month, I started around 10 years ago. You will get there!!!
I heard Georgia Okeefe spent a year only painting black and white to learn value. I'm starting to paint with my fingers more. There's no other way to get those marks ❤😊
I did not know that, that you for sharing
