    wilhelm gravitates so much towards simon is because hes the only one in the school who doesn't treat him like a "prince" but a normal person. and for simon, everyone at that school basically bullies him and treats him like trash for being from a lower class but wilhelm is approaching him and being nice to him, treating him like any other person. and obviously they're both gorgeous so theres that mutual attraction:)

    • @sbashkatova

      Agree. I just rewatched S1, and Simon keeps Prince accountable. Maybe not with any real consequences, but at least the truth is said out loud on equal terms. High society are so used to throwing someone else under the bus, Wilhelm literally doesn’t consider his behavior completely unacceptable, and it’s all shit. All of Wilhelm’s choices suck: outing August’s finances (even though we all hate August) to keep Simon is wrong. Blaming Alex is wrong… the list goes on. I agree that the prince is emotionally neglected, so he gravitates to the one person at the school who is more real in his reactions. Simon has warmth to it. And he’s braver, more assertive. They’re both outcasts in different ways with hot energy between them. I hope S3 is a happy one for them.

    Something I love about the kiss is when Wilhelm repeats the words "I'm not", I think it does a few key things:
    1. it addresses the fast paced timeline, /this is happening really quickly and I didn't stop to realise what this meant/
    2. his sentence doesn't finish likely because what he means is so many things /I am not this person, I'm not supposed to do this, I'm not someone who kisses boys (obviously)/
    3. He repeats it like a mantra, I don't think this means that he has ever considered his sexuality before, but that he is incredibly scared and anxious, especially after his panic attack - which may be why he didn't react until the loud sound ie. wall.
    I just love this kiss scene, Wilhelm says TWO WORDS that mean sooo many different things

    You talked about how relatable that first kiss was and that is pretty much what makes this series so great. It gets compared to Heartstopper (there are a lot of similarities) but the interesting thing is even though this series is literally about a prince, Heartstopper is more like a queer fairytale and this series is more realistic . Don’t get me wrong, I love Heartstopper and I’m glad we have such a wholesome and heartwarming show for queer representation, but I think this show just feels so much more authentic in its situations only with the drama heightened due to the Royalty aspect.

    The writing, direction and acting in this series are all absolutely top notch. I really love the whole production. For me, more than enough happens in these first two episodes--much of it is character development rather than action, which I appreciate. There are also so many subtle, realistic moments. For example, Wilhelm's little panic attack after the movie night hand holding--I remember having nearly that exact same reaction the first time another guy was bold enough to hold my hand (that was more than 40 years ago and I still broke out in a sweat watching Wilhelm's reaction because the scene brought it back so vividly). And if you want more shit to go down, just you wait. I really enjoy your discussions, by the way.

    the most beautiful thing about this series is the fact that it’s so realistic. even if the main character is a prince you can still relate to him and to every other character as well and it’s also amazing how the writer lisa ambjörn loves to surprise the viewers with thinking you will get something (often a typical standard trope that you’ve seen a 100 times) but then give you the complete opposite. and obviously the actors are amazing and i love that they aren’t afraid to show acne and actually make them look like real teenagers. young royals is without a doubt one of the best series right now

    Wille's "I'm not-" echoes the one in episode 1 where he says "I'm not- I'm not allowed to speak about political issues", not so much a "I'm not gay" as "I'm not allowed to be who I am." The creator/actor have said that Wille's problem has never been that he likes a boy, but that he's a prince.
    I agree about the character development, it's what makes all the conflicts have real weight later on. You can empathize with almost everyone's side of things because their motivations and the stakes are so fleshed out.

    • @gerganakantcheva8176
      @gerganakantcheva8176 Před 2 lety +16

      Yes, Wille's problem are the protocol restrictions and constant scrutiny that come with being the reigning Monarch's child. He is so restricted he can only be free secretly, like going to the football game, riding on the motorcycle or even telling Simon his political opinion. Otherwise there have to be official statements made. And it's always been like that since he was born, that's why he has an anxiety disorder. Also the fact that people just assume that he's gay if he likes a guy though he's likely pansexual but doesn't feel comfortable with any label and wants to stay unlabeled or he feels restricted again. That's why the writer is keeping him unlabled, to give him that freedom.

    it’s heavily implied that Wilhelm has more than likely never had to consider his sexuality before and probably hasn’t ever had feelings for anyone ever before (not even girls) and so he goes to this school and the only thing that’s abundantly clear to him is that he is, as Edvin Ryding (Wilhelm’s actor) says, “very, very in love with this other boy”. So he feels a very intense pull towards Simon that he can neither deny nor explain and what it means for him is that he’s diving into this very fast but his brains not entirely able to catch up so he starts to struggle not only with his sexuality but also with what it means in the context of his world.

I think him complimenting Simon on saying it is partially because he’s shocked Simon would say it at such an elite school in a room with the literal prince while clearly directing the comment at him and partially because he’s just looking for a way to align himself with Simon and get on his good side.

      @@KindaCaitlyn . i found the writing fascinating. in class the aristocracy boy complained about running a large hereditary estate. simon didn't say anything ( he scoffed) but the teacher had to prod a verbal response. simon was articulate and accurate and the aristocracy boy attacked his father personally. we don't know if he knows his dad is a drunk but it's a low blow. Then..for some reason simon attacks the monarchy even though the prince had stayed out of the conversation entirely and..in fact..seemed genuinely shocked..and looked around to see how others were responding. he didn't seem offended. this is the boy who wanted to go to public school but that was my original question..why hadn't he heard these arguments before..they are pretty common in parliament. i love that he introduced himself to simon in a genuine way. he knows he has privilege..but he also wasn't attempting to change simon in any way. he also wasn't being grubby. let me define..rich depressed kids typically find a mascot to speak their repressed opinions. this seems tentative and honest. simons first question was, why didn't you say anything. he gets a stock response but even the challenge isn't an attack it was a remarkable scene in a variety of ways

There is SO MUCH to unpack in every episode of this show and every character is extremely nuanced and have their own flaws. I will say that every scene and shot that is in this show is there for a very specific reason and their is no fluff or filler, even all the transition scenes are very specific. Great reaction! One thing I wanted to comment on when you mentioned a few times how Wilhelm is the prince and how this would influence Simon's reactions... this is exactly what Simon is not doing, I mean okay, maybe he is a little bit in awe that the prince shows some sort of interest in him. However, as other's have pointed out, he does not treat Wilhelm as a prince. He treats him as a 'normal' person. That is what attracts Wilhelm to him. What they have in common is that they are both outsiders in a way in the boarding school. Simon for obvious reasons and Wilhelm because everyone except Simon sees him more according to his status and title and not as a person.
    About the 'getting on the table thing' Lisa Ambjoern, the amazing head writer for this show, said that this is something that she found during her research. Apparently this is what they do in those boarding schools (apparently there are only two of this kind in Sweden). The justification was that they are all living and studying co close to each other that there are no secrets, really. So the idea is to get it out of the way by blurting it out in front of everyone...
    Buckle up for the roller coaster the remaining episodes will be. And enjoy :-)

    When Wilhelm
    texted Simon to delete the video he was shocked to find out he was on social media, automatically he would get into trouble from the palace he sneaks out at night on his own from the boarding school, Simon should have known that or at least ask him or tell Wilhelm, he found out from August of all people, if anyone else does that it's not a big deal but for the prince to do that is a no no, he was sent there to stay out of trouble,
    so if the text sounded a bit harsh maybe because he didn't expect that and was probably feeling sad about it 😕

    I don't think Wilhelm was in denial about his sexuality, but just afraid of being outed. To be honest, I think he had already been attracted (including sexually) to Simon since he was welcomed into the chapel choir. From there, the two began to flirt with each other. Neither of them had taken the initiative to go beyond looks and stares because Wilhelm is afraid of being outed and Simon because he doesn't want to be the low-class kid who had the audacity to flirt with the prince and be rejected. When Wilhelm showed Simon that he wanted intimate contact by letting him hold his hand it gave Simon confirmation that he could go on to the next step.

Most recent quote from Edvin from Tuesday's Swedish morning TV: "Wilhelm has no label for his sexuality. He just realizes that he is very, very in love with this other boy at the school. I enjoyed a lot your reaction of this amazing show. I love that you discuss, along the way, the topics, deep or light.
    You are right they don't talk a lot, and it will stay that way. You pointed one of the strength of the story. They want us to feel the emotions, and chose body language to do it. True an emotion roller coaster. And it is exponential until the end, be prepared. Don't worry I won't spoil anything.
    You saw the other atypical side of the show, when talking about the kiss. The authenticity. They used a lot to feel authentic, for us to relate to their experience. The awkwardness of the scenes as you said, the actors' adequate age, adequate outfits, not model actors, not over dramatizing reactions of the characters....
    Sharing sex experience on table is done in these Swedish posh school, from the writer investigations. And as you said for ep1, being queer in these places are not easy. When she interviewed the former students, they said you can be queer, you just don't talk about it.
    Get use to it, they never give us the full back story of the characters, free to interpretation I guess, just enough to make us empathize.
    Yeah August is hard to bear. Sometimes I feel he steals the show from Wille, because most of people focus on him. I liked the "evil shit" part.
    You got it. They go for deep subjects. The writer explained her main theme was "How a restricted person can fall in love? So Wille struggles between his royal duties (personified by August), and his wishing free speech and love (personified by Simon).
    Other serious themes are health issue, weight of family and society.
    This is clearly a queer romance, but they try to give diversity, to make minorities feels like is the "normality".
    Watch you for ep3.

    Thanks for making my day! Hope you had an amazing relaxing vacation too. 💜
    I finished the season of YR not long ago & it certainly is a fave series of mine now! All the characters are so real & intriguing & i love that the show goes in depth with all of them not just the 2 MCs & highlights class/privilege issues.
    I'm really impressed with Omar Rudberg in his first acting role. he's a natural! I heard Season 2 is on the way and I can't wait 😍
    (I'm looking forward to watching your love victor content too after i catch up to season 3!!! Gotta watch s2 first... ahh so many good shows atm....so little time!)

    Answer for what Wilhelm may have meant by “the teacher being more lenient on those who pay” in the maths class (assuming it wasn’t direct cheating)
    A teacher knows what topics are going to be in the test (eg they may know that binomials and proofs will be in the test, but exponentials and parametrics won’t) and the students may not.
    When someone doesn’t pay, they may give a more generalised revision session.
    But with people who do pay, the teacher may choose to focus revision on the topics that are in the test and avoid ones not in the test (without ever explicitly saying they are in the test but it is heavily implied).
    This gives an advantage because you know what is coming up and what to prepare for. This advantage is likely enough to change a grade
    The teacher will likely also give more special attention to assist students with their questions during a revision session and may also give students more useful revision resources.

    Came for the Heartstopper reactions, now hooked on Young Royals too. Looking forward to the next video when you're back from your hols 🙂 I felt bereft after finishing Young Royals and somebody suggested I watch SKAM, the story of Isak and Even. Have now binged that and the German version, Druck, the story of Matteo and David. I'd love it if you guys could react to these 🙏❤️ Druck was my favourite but you should probably start with the original Norwegian SKAM. The French version and Belgian version are also great (yes, I am a little obsessed 😬)

    Your faces during that kiss - I can't 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 But yeah, sooooo totally with you on the whole usually, first kisses are depicted so perfect on screen while in reality, yes, such happen, but very often it's far from perfect and rather weird, surprising, clumsy, funny, whatever (independent of age or sexual orientation or experience, I dare say 😅)

    The Maths teacher tells Simon: 'You need to learn to control your nerves. The calculations are often correct, but the answers are not.' I have always thought that apart from the direct meaning it's also a reference to Simon's speech about the rich and the monarchy the other day and Mr. Englund's implied disapproval of it.

    Okay so the interesting thing is that the intimacy coordinator of the show said in a Q&A that she considered their “first on screen kiss” as not the same as their “first kiss”, so basically, Wille didn’t just just like putting his hand on Simon’s face, and when they side glanced at each other during the weird peer pressured chair standing confessions, that was their “shared understanding”. Now that this was implied by someone on the actual crew it has become my head canon, and I’m also low key bitter that they cut the scene there.

    • @nomadine85
      @nomadine85 Před 2 lety +3

      It also means that maybe there’s a sort of excitement not about just the kissing itself but actually the fact that it’s happening again. And the hands kind of imply that as well, like… with the idea of them having kissed at the party the progression and behaviour and meaning completely shifts. That’s definitely more meaningful than just kissing. Yes sure Wille said “I’m not… I’m not” but while most people think he was trying to say that he’s not gay, I don’t think so. Someone also pointed out a gender neutral comment his brother makes in a later episode, and seeing how certain Wille was about liking Simone, I don’t think the gay aspect is the issue. I think their different background is the issue for Wille.

    • @EmberC
      @EmberC Před 2 lety +5

      Sara, the IC, meant that it was first kiss for S&W. But in the process, the actors kiss a lot within their roles of S & W. So, actually this kiss was first for S & W. In the first episode, there was just sexual tension with Wilhelm's hand on Simon's face.

    I love that you see that it feels like a real first kiss.. A little awkward and needs practice xD
    I think that the hand holding scene gave Simon the confidence that he felt it right and that he could go in for a kiss xD for me the hand helding felt way more daring because they only had a awkward staring and ate hotdogs together xD

  • @lauren9004
    @lauren9004 Před 2 lety +1

    Idk ur name but the one with brown hair - I totally agree with you. There’s no context about wilhelm’s previous romantic history, and the kiss during the horror movie was not ideal. I love it tho. I am curious but don’t care about wilhelms previous history cuz it’s interesting to think about but also kind of irrelevant to his relationship with Simon. Also kisses during ur teen years are awkward, lol, which makes their kiss more realistic. Also I love how this show is not just about being a gay teen. It’s also about being a teen with ur own personal situation and personal life.

    I mean like dating in Sweden is I have heard a bit different like many people I know start off with well hanging out a bit not talking super much, then get more intimate and after that it's sort of easier to talk and all that. There is a book I think called sex before coffee about dating in Sweden, of course it's like kind of different when you are a teen but still something that may explain why some people might think they are going from 0 to 100.
