People might note that Mr. Blonde was introduced as Vic Vega, who happens to share the same last name as Vincent in Pulp Fiction. This wasn't a coincidence as it was canonically confirmed they were, in fact, brothers. Madsen was initially going to make an appearance in Pulp Fiction but Tarantino decided against it since many of Reservoirs cast was returning in different roles and it would lead to some confusion.
Wrong. He was supposed to be Vincent. Tarantino offered him the role but Madsen declined the offer since he had another project he was going to work on. That project fell though but by the time that happened, John Travolta had already been cast. And that’s when they decided to make it cannon that they are brothers.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read that Madsen was originally cast as Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, as Vic and Vincent were supposed to be twin brothers.

Michael Fassbender was in a stage production of Reservoir Dogs, it's part of how he ended up in Inglourious Basterds. This film translates to stage really well.

It was one of his first acting things he did when he was 18 that he did with his best friend at the time. They used a pork chop to stand in as the ear, just to give you an idea of the production's spec. He spoke about it in an interview.

If I remember correctly Tarantino lit up the warehouse like a stage. The actors could walk anywhere and be in good light. That’s why it feels like a play. Because the warehouse stage was lit like a theater.

That's the power of character-consistency. Some writers just have characters flip-flop and do stupid shit to create some cheap drama; but here the best scene in the movie is predicated on Mr. Blonde always being that specific type of guy and NEVER wavering for anything.
The whole monologue is the homeboy being insulted at how badly-written Orange's alibi is

27:58 Supposedly Tarantino blew most of the budget for the music just for the copyrights to play Stuck in the Middle with You, because he was absolutely adamant about having that be the song played during that particularly brutal scene with Mr. Blonde and the cop. It's the prevailing reason why there isn't music in most of the film.

The scene in which the cop is begging for his life, saying "I got a little kid at home now, please!" Genuinely freaked Michael Madsen out, having just had a child of his own.
Michael Madsen actually started to dislike playing villains. I think he's probably actually a big softie who just happens to have one of the great villain presences, lol.
A heist film that shows everything but the heist and Tarantino still pulls it off. The debut that told the moviemaking world a new visionary had come along to shake up Hollywood.
Great small touches like him ratting instantly on steve buscemi being the non tipper is so great.
The acting, dialog and crazy scenes are what make this movie on a lower budget so amazing
The subtle nuance in this film is amazing, and it is quite like a play in its simplicity (mostly due to budget constraints). The performances are fantastic, but Tim Roth as Mr. Orange was S-tier. He perfectly conveys the way worrying about your image, or looking like a tough guy goes out the window when you think you're about to die. It's a little aspect to the character that many actors never would have thought to include.
I'm sure someone else will say this too, but just in case, when QT worked at a video store he recommended the French movie "Au Revoir Les Enfants (Good-bye Children in english)" and the customer said," I don't want to watch no movie called reservoir dogs" and that's where the title comes from. (Or that's the store Quentin told, who can say 😊)
Harvey Keitel is a legend and never fails to give his all to every performance he commits to. Another under-rated performance was Smoke (1995). The guy brings class and gravitas to all his projects
The DJ for K-BILLY was played by Steven Wright, a standup known for his deadpan delivery of one-liners. It’s easy to hear his influence in Mitch Hedberg’s comedy.
Wright also had a bit part in So I Married an Axe Murderer.
_So I Married An Axe Murderer_ might be the most lively performance I’ve seen him do. 😄
The next year the movie "Free Willy" "Glen Greenwood" was released. In an interview Madsen mentioned that this resulted in radically different reactions from theater goers. Often on the street, kids who recognized him as Glen would run towards him and their parents who recognized him as Mr Blonde would pull their kids back.

@@adgato75 It's not that City on Fire is "too similar".. It's that Tarantino totally ripped off City on Fire. He took a few scenes and expanded them into an entire movie, scrapping the actual robbery and running gunfight parts and skipping ahead to the gang reaching the hideout.

the whole 'play-like' aspect really shines again in The Hateful Eight - plus with some of the same actors!
I love the narrative trick of having a character asleep in the background for long enough that both characters and audience forget about them, only for them to unexpectedly intervene in a crisis, like Mr Orange when he shot Mr Blonde. Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells did the same trick. It's brilliant and feels more satisfying than revealing something previously hidden to the audience.

Mr. Pink's ending was equally grim. If you listen to the commotion while Mr. Orange is telling Mr. White he's a cop, you can hear the police yelling orders at Mr. Pink and then opening fire on him. As the police enter the warehouse shortly after, it's reasonable to assume Mr. Pink was killed as well.

I kind of admire Chris Penn for holding his own in scenes with 4 really great actors.
Quentin Tarantino films are plays. Many of them have lots of dialogue and can be set in one room. Just look at the movie, the hateful eight. And you must understand that the one place they filmed in which was the warehouse which was due to the fact that they had a low budget. This is a low budget film. Tarantino knew this when he was writing it. Because originally he was going to direct it himself on 16 mm film. Until the script got some buzz… And Harvey Keitel got attached. And that's when the studio gave them more money to film it.
In regards to cost cutting... many of the outfits being worn are the actor's own clothes (or outfits which were put together/found at Thrift Stores). Both Tarantino and Kevin Smith are known for having worked at places that did video-rentals in their youth
Never watched any of your videos before but I saw this in the recommended and it had been a while since I have seen RD so I clicked on it. Love your explanations as well as your editing ability which isn't easy. I feel like you captured the film as a whole perfectly, leaving enough out that if someone watched this and still wanted to watch the movie they could so easily. Great job!

One thing I always loved was when Blonde leaves to get the gas can. The diagetitc "Stuck in the Middle" fades as he goes outside and we then hear ambient noise of the neighborhood. Then transition back as the neighborhood sound fades out and then we hear the song again. All in real time as we follow with Blonde. The peaceful sounding neighborhood never realizing the horrors inside (even there accompanied by a happy little ditty)

I actually adapted the scene of Tim Roth's Mr Orange practicing his tale to make it into a monologue and used it for auditions.
That and Christopher Walken's prison camp butt watch monologue from Pulp Fiction.
Casting legendary film noir actor Lawrence Tierney as crime lord Joe Cabot was an extra stroke of genius. Check out his work in Dillinger (1945) and Born to Kill (1947).
Read up on Lawrence Tierney. He was a mad man of old Hollywood. Apparently he was a pill on this set too.
He is one scary (much younger) dude in Born to Kill. And also scary on Seinfeld as Elaine's father.

This movie has shaped so much in our culture that you don't even know about for instance the musician pink originally wanted to go by the name Mr Pink because she loved the character in this movie she eventually just dropped the mister and went with pink

About the sound design, if you go back and rewatch the scene after Joe, Mr. White, and Eddie shoot each other, Mr. Pink leaves and Mr. White and Mr. Orange's riveting scene and reveal is so intense you may not notice the background noises... and what happens to Mr. Pink, which is an interesting way to make rewatches of this masterpiece of film even more enjoyable.
I think Quentin Tarantino found his style and groove in Reservoir Dogs but was able to flesh it out and do it bigger/better in Pulp Fiction because he now had a big budget.
I saw this in a movie theater when it released. I was blown away. I would forever tell people "There is a crime that has gone badly, but the movie is about the characters and each revealing their story of how they ended up in the crime and what happens with each character in the aftermath." The heist is just background, the real story is our characters and THEIR stories.
Vic Vega is the brother of Vincent Vega (played by Travolta) from Pulp Fiction.

The woman in the car that hits Mr. Pink appears to be the same stuntwoman who gets shot by Marcellus Wallace in "Pulp Fiction". As these two films are supposed to be in the same universe, I had always hoped it was the same woman who just has bad luck in L.A.

The radio announcer was steven wright a pretty big conedian qt the time. That monktone depressed voice was part of his routine. When i first saw this in the early 90s i recognized his voice instantly despite not being that big a fan.
The first script written by Tarantino was actually True Romance, but he sold that as well as Natural Born Killers, in order to get funds to make Reservoir Dogs. For me, it would have been interesting to see how those scripts would have worked out if Tarantino had directed them himself. Otherwise, for me, Tarantino’s defining movies are still Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction (although some really like Jackie Brown as a more ‘mature’ movie). The movies he made after these were primarily revenge fantasy movies in various genres - which weren’t as interesting to me as the themes of the original films.

It's funny how you kept talking about the movie could be a play, because a long time ago a playhouse in my hometown of Erie, PA did it as a play and it was so cool seeing it like that. They actually fired blanks during the scenes where Orange shoots Blonde and the final standoff. It was so loud in the theater when they did that, but it was so effective, especially when Orange shot Blonde. Great review as always!!

Paused what I was watching and came here immediately upon noticing this in the sidebar. Tarantino is one of The Greats, and this is one of his greatest movies (and a personal favourite, perhaps partially because it introduced me to one of my favourite actors of all-time, Steve Buscemi). Brilliant writing, an absolutely stacked cast, and an amazing 70's soundtrack.

Since you liked Tim Roth's portrayal of Mr. Orange in this movie you may also enjoy seeing him in the role of Archie Cunningham (one of the most memorable and despicable villains of modern cinema) in the '90s film ROB ROY. Jessica Lange is quite good in it, too, maybe the best role she's ever been given and arguably her finest performance. Another historical Scottish biopic made in the same year as BRAVEHEART and I know of many who think it the better between the two.
One of the beauties of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction is the use of diagetic music. This means that all of the music in these movies is music being listened to by the actual characters in the movie. It's a brilliant technique that not many directors can master.
One of the greatest opening credits sequences ever. A slow-mo walk across a parking lot to George Baker's "Little Green Bag". Did you notice that Mr. Blonde was sitting on top of a Hearse at one point? He was played by Michael Madsen. I met him and got his autograph at the San Diego Comic-con back in '03 when he was promoting "Kill Bill: Volume I". Great reaction.

The plot of Reservoir Dogs is lifted from a 1980s Hong Kong movie called "City on Fire," a sweeping crime epic that covers the formation of the criminal gang and its early heists; Reservoir Dogs is a smaller movie that copies Act 3 but changes the ending.
True story, in highschool my theatre troupe adapted this as a one act okay for competition. It was mostly the warehouse scenes and a few of the cop rehearsal scenes. I ran lights for it so wasn't on stage, but i remember it vividly.
The radio DJ is legendary deadpan comedian Stephen Wright, IMHO one of the funniest comedians of all time. This soundtrack album still lives in my rotation as one of the best of all time.
My favorites are the ones you watch that are _clearly_ outside your comfort zone! And this one was good!

I always found it fascinating that Quentin Tarantino, famous for his wide knowledge of and appreciation for cinema, with all its grandeur, made for his first film something that could have been originally a stage play adapted for the screen. There's obviously the few inserted flashback scenes, but most of the story is just talking in a single space. I'm sure the small budget was the reason, but it's just interesting that it's in his canon.
The opening alone deserves the thumbs up lol
Still an all time favorite film for me. It was so formative for 19 year old me (I saw the film in college in 2003 for the first time) and informed so much of how I view filmmaking (and writing in general) today as “character is king” over things like visual spectacle and action.
It’s great to know this movie still has the same impact on first time viewers 30 years later. Still blows my mind this was QT’s first attempt at a feature and it goes so hard

Quentin is one of four directors whom I've managed to see every one of their films in a theater. The others are David Fincher, Sam Mendes and Darren Aronofsky. "Dogs" played in only a few theaters in Chicago back in 1992, but I still saw it three times. My favorite of his movies, possibly because it's his shortest.

Yo Nat, if you enjoyed the play feel to Reservoir Dogs you should give Glengarry Glen Ross a watch. It's literally adapted from a play, has multiple heavyweight performances from some of the best actors in the business and very few people react to it for some reason. It's an amazing film and I think you'd really dig it.

His first film and it immediately set the tone for his work; brilliant dialogue, then everyone dies.
A lot of great performances here but honestly I love Chris Penn in this movie a lot! Regarding the sound, Mr Blonde walking outside and the sound in the building kinda left behind while he's outside, then walking back in the building and into the music/sound again I loved.. the ending as well when you can hear Mr. Pink getting surrounded outside while Larry and Freddy are inside.. again I thought was great and just gave this movie such immersion! For me the sound was a strong part and something I've loved thru Quentin's catalog of movies, he is great with sound while also subtle!
Nat went from Megan ear pulling straight to the directly most iconic ear loss scene (along with The Big Lebowski) set to music no less - _Here l am stuck in the ear removal with you_
Interesting fact: Kirk Baltz, who played Officer Marvin Nash, is a respected method acting coach in LA. One of his students was pro wrestler Chris Jericho, who devoted a chapter in his book A Lion’s Tale to his classes with Kirk and credits him with helping Chris process his anger toward his mother’s former boyfriend after his mother was paralyzed from the neck down during what is believed to be a domestic violence incident.
