    Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

You can use the same black plastic pipe, that you have already, from the pump to the bottom of the well. At the bottom of the pipe put a plastic bucket upside down with holes drilled in it and your one way valve with filter inside the bucket. The bucket will keep the pipe off the floor and allow water to go into the pipe.

Yes yes yes, the same HDPE pipe, forget about that flexible trash pipe, ruined hours for me trying to make it work on a pump. and 80 EUROS, thats crazy prices you have there.

The best tip for making crumpets is not to over mix. Stop as soon as the ingredients are combined so that they will produce the bubbles that give them their sponge like quality. Good luck baking 😊

We live on a lakeside here in Oz and the firefighting planes swoop in to collect water whenever they are needed. Aerial firefighters are real heroes, along with the people on the ground of course.
We are definitely lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers and paid firefighters, as I’m sure you are.
We are building up to a bad season here.
Wishing you don’t personally have to deal with a fire.. it’s a very soul destroying experience.
Take care and know that we are thinking of you during your long hot summer.

      @FrankieOffGrid  Před 11 měsíci +5

They’re amazing to watch collecting the water aren’t they. Yes so many brave volunteers and dedicated workers, it must be such a touch job, especially when the fires last days and days, and people on the ground need to stay through the night with all that heat around them. We very carefully chose our land based on fire risk so hopefully we’re highly unlikely to have anything big close to us, and we do have a plan should there be one. Hope you’re enjoying a nice winter, spring and autumn are just around the corner for us ☺️

Forget bricomarche and look for an agricultural cooperative or a local store specializing in plumbing. There are proper hoses for what you want and more resistant than that. Ask the farmers in the area, they will certainly tell you what to buy and where. Unfortunately, fires are normal in the Portuguese summer, most of them set on purpose because there is a lot of business with this and money involved. All the best to you and your beloved animals!

Hi Soraia . . . I am very interested to know more about fires set purposefully ‘for business ends?’ In Portugal. Would you mind elaborating a bit for me (in NW USA/now close to BC Wildfires, as well as increased awareness of our own) the goals of anyone who would initiate fires, especially in the dry/fire seasons? Thanks in advance! (Oh, and do you use HEPA filtration in your homes when affordable/do people pay attention to time spent outdoors in extreme smoke/polluted skies? . . .as a norm?). Thank you again, and what part of Portugal are you most familiar with in this regard? : ). THANKS
From one who is just figuring out how to wrap her head around staying indoors parts of Summers to hide from occasional bouts of smoke, rather than extreme heat.

In Portugal transition from rural life to the cities is recent enough for people still remember how thing were in the villages. And aldough most of them do not have the time to take care of things of their childhood, it's dificult to let go of them. I'm "only" 45 and I still remember my grandparents with goats, 2 working cows and the little fields between the slopes with corn and other cultures. Very dificult times but also enchanted ones for our eyes. Keep up the great channel and, if you can, give a look in mine. Perhaps you like it, I don't know.

I will never forget the horrible heat wave we had here a couple of years ago. Over 700 people died as a result, mostly seniors. This year has had over 350 forrest fires but not as hot as then. Most of the fires were man made and some deliberately set and some just plain ignorance and stupidity like people throwing out cigarette butts or having unsanctioned campfires. It is so sad that people don't listen.
Jasper has a huge project in mind. I enjoy his channel also.

    Hello Clarissa and Iwan,
We live on a greek island and we also are very used to wildfires. It is such a shame, the destruction people are causing.
Like others have suggested, you could maybe try the ordinary black pipes for the pump, or are they not bendy enough? For our solar boiler system we have pipes that have a foam casing, they have been in the scorching sun for years and don't have any issues.
Don't try to do too much with this heat, summer is almost over and there will be plenty of time for projects. You are doing such an amazing job, your videos are like meditation for me.
Sending lots of love from Greece 💕🇬🇷

We live in Alberta Canada, Calgary Alberta, city and province, we have wild fires to the province further west. British Colombia 2 years ago we drove past these blazes close to the road. It’s really humbling to see the flames and the magnitude of that scene. This spring we had a fire both of us in Grand Prairie Alberta burning a 637000 hectares. It took weeks to put that out. It was a provincial park so human lives we fine but wildlife and trees or vegitation completely destroyed.

For the water pipe. Get "conduit" pipe. It's what you would use for "electrial-piping" indoors. UV resistant and different sizes as well. Or external drain-pipe. 40 or 50 mm inside width. UV resistant. Ask that South African lady at the shop. She will know what it is. I'm SA as well. We use it here big-time. The summers are also 30-45 Celsius here. I've never seen them break. Mine have been OUTSIDE winter and summer for more than 20+ years, no problem at all. You can also get different fittings. 45, 90 and 180 degrees extentions. Use water-tape to seal the joints or silicone. Hope it helps you. It holds up to 8 bar pressure. Good luck. Greetings from SA...😎😎😎🤩🤩🤩

Here in Australia we have cane toads and they are poisonous that is why I don’t like them eating grass.

Bom dis Carrissa and Iwan and all animals. 1st off the coffee i bought from your online shop is soooo good and the rhubarb spritzer is just devine. L9ved the packaging too. Mega impressed how earth conscious the buisness appeared to be ith even using brown paper parcel tape rather than the awful brown plastic 1. A lovely suprise was the cards, 1 thanking me for my order and supporting you. The other blank. Lovely little touch.
Thankfully the fire was put out and your all safe. The camera on the floor capturing Frankie running with his diddy legs was so cute, then followed by his brother, the lanky legs Diogo speeding off. Looked like a race where the sausage was givn a headstart. Does Diogo stay on your land when he is off roaming around on a nightime? Or was he on an evening walk with you but zoomed ahead? How is Frankie's jaw doing? Jadper has some ambitious plans and i hope hd gets to realise them, now i can bake, garden and worked as a retail manager full time with a part time bar maid job too. So i think i may have simething to help his community, sadly i am not in a position to buy over there yet nor am i in the best if health although i have bedn worse. I have hot glushes badly and bought on line a "cold towel" which you dampen (even being dampened by sweat works. So just very lightly dampened than snap it. It cools it down massively. Then when it has warmed up just snap it again andnit goes really cold. Also cold mats for dogs put under your sheets is cheaper than cold mats made for humans. I share the same Summer temps, plus 10 degrees, as you. Unfortunately I only get less than 30mm of rain on average per annum. The rest of my water comes from mains and it is expensive. I try to use permaculture and regenerative/syntropic farming to grow my food. Sometimes it is so hot I have to put my chickens in a portable baby cot inside to keep them cool. I feel you.

Warburtons Bakery in my home town of Bolton where it all started. Creature comforts hey, crumpets, thick sliced toastie or meat & potato pasties eaten from a paper bag as you shop, even a sausage roll. But I will be giving that up when I finally make the move to Portugal. I'm sure the local cuisine is just as tasty. But like I said on your channel somewhere, swales will rejuvenate the land, hold water longer, keep it green and in some cases, fire resistant. Great channel by the way.

i saw frankie at the portugal project he sure gets around with those tiny legs of his, doesnt he. yes there is another channel called project portugal (subscriber) but i dot pay attention to the name just the people to distinguish each portugal build. although, sometimes i get mixed up with the france and itaialian projects cause they are all stone houses so i have a cheat sheet as well.

Just an idea if you buy another pipe cover it first with the tape so it will help to stop it getting damaged again, sorry to hear this working out rather expensive for you. Hope it cools down again soon and you can do more in the garden again, at least you can have a lovely boil egg salad for dinner, take care, xx

Wondering if you could use the hose material that they use for fire hose on fire trucks. Very durable, meant for extreme pressure, and made for water. How about the pool noodles. Slice down middle then put it around the hose for protection.

Do you have plumbing supply stores locally? Or I think I saw a swimming pool supply store, do they have similar pipe perhaps. Also try agricultural/farming supplies. Or perhaps online ordering .it’s hard to operate in the heat, I know my brain capacity drops and I can’t think until it cools down. Water is so important. Good luck with the pipe. 🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏼🤘🏿💋❤️

Solution for water supply is to use a header tank on your roof, then you won’t have to rely on the pump being operational constantly.😊Also you should use a blow dryer to heat the tape so it melts the glue and sticks better

Great idea! We have an off grid cabin in Eastern Maine and we pump to a barrel perched up high and rely on gravity feed for showers and sinks. It works very well. Goode luck your water!

From another South African lady, try to tape the pipes when they are new so they are a bit stronger. The problem with the land ownership is also prevalent in Greece. So the buildings fall down rather than sell it. There the problem is more that a single dwelling is left to 10 children who then cannot agree. 🤦‍♀️

I think a tiny application of Gorilla Glue could mend any future tears in that piping. Then once the glue is pop roved to have mended the tear, then give bbn it a wrap with the sealing tape the lady gave you?
Gorilla Glue mended a cut in my brand new rubberized cotton work gloves when I was cutting something with shears that was close to my fingertips evidently. It's water-tight!
How about cutting the length of one side of a pool noodle and fitting it around the piece of wood above the well that the hose rests on?

Tipp for cutting tomato: use a serrated knife, it will cut them nicely and does not need sharpening. Also, I would remove the greenish part where the stem was attached, they could still contain tomatine and solanine and be slightly toxic.
Blackberries ripened in the sun make very delicious jam, try to leave the kernels in and make the jam as dry as possible for maximum taste. I once made some jam from wild blackberries collected in Tuscany, those little, halmost half dried fruits resulted in an explosion of taste, literally sunshine in a jar.

Javalis (wild boar) destroy gardens and plantations so, it's a good thing hunters keep the population under control...
Javali meat is also one of the best, in my opinion

If you have a broken pipe, just cut it in half and reconnect it with a coupler peace. This fix the leak.
