I met Cody back stage in 2010 at the Elimination Chamber in St. Louis. I was in a wheelchair it was 4 days after I had my ACL replacement, I said Hello he asked me what happened, tore it coming off the top rope, was an indy wrestler at the time, told me to take care of my knee, an maybe he'd see me one day, Thanks for the inspiration and kind words Champ!
Thanks for the questions, I didn't realize I'd have any response or anything, so thank you, my knee is okay, but my back requires surgery from herniated and bulging disks among some other problems, but thank you for the questions I appreciate it, I don't wrestle anymore and haven't in years, God bless
The reason why people like Cody is simple... he is a human. He is a fan of so many things like everyone else... and he is not afraid to show it. I mean, he talked Star Wars, Transformers, a WCW Fan, Marvel. We get him, because he is one of us.
How Cody changed the conversation from creating a core memory for fans to a mini rant on the star wars fandom/getting phased out I will never know lmao
@Floppy815 Chris has been doing wrestling interviews for a LONG time. It's not easy to get to where he is, he deserves all the credit for making it happen.
I met Cody the day after he won the ROH World title in Lowell, MA and in that one minute I had with him, he gave me his undivided attention. It was the coolest thing because it felt like he truly cared about my experience and it’s a lifelong memory I’ve had ever since. Everything he said about meeting people was true. What an amazing person. To this day, since that day in Lowell, he has been my favorite wrestler.
Man he nailed it about the Star wars fandom. I just commented on a post within the last week or so about how crazy it is everyone seems to be coming around on the prequels after decades of hating them
The entire shift in perspective is certainly similar, but let's be honest, people are looking back at those movies with rose-tinted glasses. The prequels overall are ok at best, people are either nostalgic about the time or just hate the sequel trilogy even more.
I will say people have been coming around to the prequels for about a decade or so now but only after the Clone Wars series came out and kinda sparked the love for the prequels. Even more funny seeing people start praising and warming up to the sequels after hearing non-stop how bad and rightfully disorganized the movies were. Like it's a shame it takes some people that are always negative so long to finally see how good people had it cause things can and will always get worse over time
You can thank Disney for the newfound appreciation of the prequel trilogy. Some of the new Disney Star Wars has been terrible and has made episode 1 and 2 look good in comparison. IMO episode 3 was always good.
I like that you had the guts to ask point blank, "What do you wish people would ask you more?" That's something nobody asks because it seems so obvious. Yet, it's such a good question that you can build the conversation from.
Cody truly is the peoples champ! He loves Star Wars, video games, Invincible, The Boys & is passionate about his profession! There was always potential with him during the 2010's, glad he's the face of the company now! He's a workhorse, an adrenaline junkie, safe in the ring, compassionate & incredible as a technical wrestler! I really don't know how people don't like him, or complain about him being champion!
I love how genuine a fan Chris is. When he wants to know he will ask for off camera and i have never ever heard him spill any type of beans. I have so much jealous respect for Chris.
23:05 he really makes a ever lasting impact on his young fans. I took my kids to a show a few months back and I was genuinely shocked to see him say he would sign autographs for everyone after the show. My boys got to meet their favorite wrestler and it's something none of us will ever forget, so thank you Cody for that.
Man Chris Van Vliet has grown on me so much - his interviews are now some of the best in the industry. He doesn't shy away from some of the slightly more controversial guests... but he also has the really nice, just... heart warming softball interviews... IDK he is just ... he's the best in the interview game right now by a million, billion miles.
I’m not a big Cody Rhodes fan but I will admit he carries himself very well! He’s the John Cena of this new era and I wish him well! A heel turn will be shocking!
I really do think in 5 years we will look back and not only think of Chris Van Vliet as the best wrestling interviewer, but one of the best interviewers period, the guy just knows how to make a conversation compelling, I dont even really watch wrestling anymore but I always watch these interviews anyway because they're just that damn good

Another fantastic interview. These press runs really make me enjoy Cody more. I lost all faith last year and stopped watching for 6+ months until the old man was outed fully. To come back in the fall of last year and have the buildup that actually culminated in him winning the way it should of been was one of the most satisfying feelings ever. I still didnt really have faith. But knowing its in HHH, Nick, Aris hands. Makes me happy as ever. Codys gotten over twice in my book.
Wrestlemania 40 was my first Mania it was beyond my expectations i grew up watching Cody 2 years into being Lgeacy just coming to the end i have followed him from WWE to post WWE to AEW to back to WWE seeing him win the title live is something i genuinely watch back to this day and be like how was i there? If i ever got the chance to meet him once even if its s brief conversation or a picture i want him to know im proud of how i saw his journey and consider one of my favourite wrestlers right now i have been looking forward to this interview and it was worth the wait
I met cody a few times , what baffled me was I met him on 4 separate occasions in about a 2 year period and each time he remembered me , such a lovely lovely guy , and will never forget him letting me hold the njpw us title aswell , also met him right after he left wwe in 2017 and he asked my favourite wrestlers and i mentioned the miz , to which he told me miz helped him get his new theme song (Kingdom) 🤣, absolutely love cody
As a grown ass man who knows & understands wrestling, even I got emotional when Cody 'finished his story.' Yes, we know it's scripted & that's why we love it. The athletic physical storytelling. Nobody turns on their favorite movies or TV shows & goes, "I can't watch this fake story"
Cody’s growth has been incredible. It feels like how he was in 2019 just a bigger scale. In 2019 he was THE MAN in AEW and then after the MJF feud the memes started and the lack of world title matches. Leaving AEW as shocking as it was it worked. If he stayed he would have either have been the gate keeper wrestler or been a heel world champion and that would have been fun but what he got now is much more special, he’s the guy the way he should’ve been in 2019. He is the perfect baby face
I’d say he’s more of the guy that was handpicked to dethrone Roman but nothing more, since catc he’s been fading. It seems like wwe writers are having a hard time booking face champions
Thank you again Chris. I hope you know just how good and natural you are at these. Watching podcasts like this one, with two guys just chatting without it looking like a formatted interview with the interviewer going from question A to B like he's not listening to his guests answers is so cool man. Keep it up!
The Metal Gear Solid reference. I knew as soon as CVV said "Alaskan Archipelago". Nice to see Cody still remembers the same parts of my favourite games.
Every time I hear a Cody interview I'm increasingly shocked at how similar our fandoms are. Our fav wrestlers are the same. He loves Metal Gear Solid. He thinks the SW prequels are Goated. He seems very self aware. I guess that makes sense given we're similar in age, but it's always delightful to have so many things in common.

Cody Rhodes here's to you on all you have accomplished in your career. You have made your fans proud like you or hate you. You will always be my champ in my heart
Love Cody. Back in 2017 at an event in NYC, I watched Cody push away security guards out front so he can sign and take pictures with fans. Especially this Hispanic mother with her young kids, it was incredibly sweet. Cody deserves it all.
It’s honestly crazy because, I been a fan of Cody since he was in his dashing character and I always knew I always knew he’d be a great champion and it’s crazy that the day has finally come. I remember going crazy when he beat Ezekiel Jackson for the IC. I was a kid screaming for his favorite wwe wrestler to win. So glad he had this legacy and career and impact now. Truly, deserved.
He said if I was Stardust… It’s never been fully confirmed. 💀😂🤣😂🤣 Also if you go back and watch the Stardust stuff and see how committed he is, it’s actually not bad at all
I was in the crowd in St. Louis that first Raw after the news had leaked, the second Raw after the Rumble. We knew we had a job to do and we did it. This is where the whole thing shifted.
It’s sort of protecting Roman and his current run. They dont want to reveal too much about him. Even the Behind the Current Mania doc protected Roman’s character. Im sure one day we’ ll get a more tell all interview or book about his tribal chief run. It’s the ultimate success story. Guy gets ridiculed in his initial run, then conquers the world in his heel run.
When Cody talked about how if you are waiting for someone to turn heel then he is technically already the heel in your book, that resonated with me 100%... I am one of those who is waiting for that heel turn, same way I waited for Cena to do the same, so they are already heels in my book. It's just very difficult for me to stay interested in babyface characters, particularly after they reach the top of the mountain, I've always leaned more towards the heels and their motivation, especially when their excuses make absolute sense (Hangman in AEW right now, Punk in his feud with Cena back in the days, etc.).

It’s the “If you’re not really active in my life, I gotta move ya out to make room for the new memories” type energy that we’re on😌🙏🏻
Its sad that they never talked about roman. The man brought me into wrestling in 2021
It’s sort of protecting Roman and his current run.
29:33 the fact that Cody mentioned metal gear solid blows my mind .
Cody is the only active wrestler I can watch interviews and it doesn’t ruin kayfabe
He was basically Homelander when he was heel in ROH🤯
ANDRENALINE IN MY SOUL

Have been following your interviews for a long time, they just keep getting better and you get such a cool variety of guests, great job!
Much appreciated!
