- The planeswalker Arlinn Kord might be all that stands between humanity and total darkness on this visit to the gothic horror inspired plane, where vampires, zombies, spirits, demons, and werewolves embrace the unnatural moonrise and shun the day.
Can Arlinn unlock the secrets of the Celestus? Can she and her new friends Teferi, Chandra, and Kaya protect the Dawnhart Coven long enough for them to perform the ritual that will push back the night?
With 16 story spotlight cards and five chapters for the online story, there's a lot to take in - but don't be scared! Ryan's here to walk you through What Happens in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt.

Innistrad : The punching bag of the multiverse
What about Dominaria, and Zendikar? They have had it pretty rough.
At least they won at the end,but for Innistrad? NOPE
theoretically the monsters of Innistrad make up a greater portion of the world then the humans do. So wouldnt eternal night be considered a win? sure a loss for the "Heroes" but the dominant beings get the win(the monsters i mean)
@@Zwulf66
Eternal night = All plant life & humans dying out
Which means no food source for monsters.
Which finally means Innistrad will just die as everything tries to eat each other: before finally all life is dead with the exception of Spirit & Zombies.
No, no... that's Mirrodin.
I absolutely love the humans in this set and their style. Going all ancient and paganistic magic to try and restore balance. Plus the Halloween vibes are just immaculate. I'm in love with this set
I'm dressing up as them for Halloween! I love the look of the token
Exactly what i was also thinking. Sungold sentinel is one of the best arts in the set
Yeah they'd be literal insane irl, but magic exists in Magic so it's sane in fiction.
I will say that the most delightful part of the story wasn't Olivia's skincare routine, but the side story of Wilhelt crush on Gisa. Especially Gisa and Geralf's banter
I laughed out loud at Geralf's last letter to Gisa 😆
@@user-ui8nx8ul9d "I don't require your presence, which has never been loving, and can only on the technicality that we are unfortunately related!" made me howl in laughter the first time I read it
Admittedly I haven't read the story for myself yet, but I like the idea that Arlinn and company collectively groaned before getting Sorin, like they weren't afraid of him, they just didn't feel like dealing with this creep.
That part is kinda funny. "Save the world, I don't feel like it." "We just need to know where the key is!" "Nah, just gonna try to kill ya." "Isn't that more work than just telling us where the key is?" "Something something Avacyn something."
It's my personal thought that everyone knows of him or knows him from at least the war on Ravnica. And all he did there was fight Nahiri, despite everyone trying to get both of them to help fight against Bolas. I think eventually, they halt the ego battle and do help, but everyone knows how much of a pain he is or was to work with. The last thing they wanted to have to do was talk him into helping them because they know he's difficult at best. And it seems completely hostile at worst.
Don't be so hard on the dude, his surrogate Daughter died recently and so did all of his other family, or at least I think they did, honestly it wasn't very clear wether or not they lived
@@dwighttheislander7369 My understanding is that all the Markovs who were home at the manor at the time died. All those who were away from home at the time lived.
@@dwighttheislander7369 I acknowledge that those things are bad but all of his tragedy is his fault for being such a dirtbag to Nahiri. Basically, he earned his heartbreak.
I don't know why I found it so funny but I literally spat out my water when you said Thraben is infested with zombie because Liliana just left them there after fighting back the eldrazi
very Liliana
She literally suggests to local necromancers to "be creative" and find something to do with them. Arlinn is so peeved off by that. I love it.
One of my favorite planes! Because, of course Werewolves!!
Also, need the Legendary Angels Ranked by L.O.R.E!!
I second this.
i third it!
Yeeeessssss
That’s easy
1.) Sigarda
2-5.) The rest
giving sigarda coven i kinda figured shed play a more central role in... the witch stuff. Instead of showing up once, though i hope she shows up again.
My favourite line in the webfiction was “Angel’s mercy, she wants to vomit.” because when I see that card I also want to vomit.
Dude, but is SEVEN life!!!!
Said no one ever.
I think this is the best story when compared to the last 10 sets
I feel like it took itself more seriously and it used Inistrad's dark and gloomy atmosphere really well
The sets from like eldraine onwords felt like the plain they took place in was just background without its own history and lore (this even extanded to some old plains like zendikar in zendikar rising) but this story not only used consequences from Inistrad's past events it introduced new ones (aka the eternal night) to spice up the story (plus imo the eternal night could have something to do with Emrakul messing with the silver moon)
Overall a really great story and i hope wizards keeps it up in the future
Love Lovecraft, love Inistrad, love this set, love zombies. I'm happy.
This is nothing compared to old magic. Go read brothers war. That one book set a bar for high fantasy novels in terms of quality writing. Magic as a story has only degraded since 2006.
Short, sweet and ends in eternal darkness, exactly how I like it
I think this is how you end up on a government watch list.
I like to think that the moment dennick said “Markov” everyone just sighed in frustration and started ranting to each other
I always wondered how Arlinn can control her lycantropy without simply becoming a savage and bloodlust werewolf (and if she is the only werewolf capable of doing this). This reminds me of the Silverfurs, back when Avacyn blessed the werewolves of the plane with the Cursemute: she couldn't get rid of the curse of lycantropy but at least the afflicted would retain their human consciousness while having all the pros of having a hybrid wolf body.
Wolfir
@@recurvestickerdragon
That was the original name before Avacyn's magic went caput thanks to Nahari and the Wolfir reverted into becoming regular but good werewolves. (one might be in the set as Brutal Cathar)
To give my theory to why Arlinn and the Silverfurs were able to keep control over their beast form, its explained by Avacyn in the Cursemute that the human and wolf side are warring with each other. So if the werewolf accepted their wolf side instead of rejecting it and fearing the transformation as normal, its possible that this grants them control in wolf form. To support this theory evil werewolves, while not outright stated, seem to have better control ever since the first set. Compare and contrast the out of control Mayor of Avabruck with the composed Kruin Outlaw.
@@TheSwordsman100 brutal Cathar kinda implies he's in the watch but people don't know he's a werewolf
@@KyunaCookies
Take a closer look at the art. While his werewolf form does share the same shoulder piece, the rest of the armor does not match his human form, fits his wolf form quite well (suggesting it was made with this form in mind) and is blue instead of white. Furthermore his pelt color is that of a silverfur's and his color is white/red unlike any werewolf that has lost control.
@@TheSwordsman100 ah fair enough! I'm reasonably new to mtg lore so I didn't notice
It seems like not a lot really happened. I'm happy to have a "two-set block" again though. Hopefully that means Crimson Vow will capitalize on the story threads of Midnight Hunt.
I just wish they would call it a block again. Will these sets be draftable together? Probably not on Arena, but I'd love to try it.
Who knows maybe one day they will get back to three set blocks.
My biggest concern was Chandra seems to be about 15 years old, and not a battle-hardened veteran at all. Sure, she's suppose to be impulsive but that doesn't mean childish. The side stories were generally more fun, some actual spookiness with Old Stickfingers and good times with Gisa and her playthings.
Hey everyone! I see a lot of people asking about Liesa and Wrenn, so let me just address that here: both of them appeared in side stories (which you can read by following my link in the description) but they did not have any impact on the main story (which is what I covered in this video.) I am doubtful either of them will show up in Crimson Vow, but I'd be willing to explore their side stories in a future video, if that's something people want to see.
Thanks for watching, and enjoy Midnight Hunt!
The side stories were better than the main. The stories reminded me of folklore, and the older stories like the Gitrog monster.
Liesa is my favorite legend, and Wrenn is no doubt one of the strongest cards in the set. Would love to see a video on these side stories.
Please do cover the side stories! I find them kind of tedious to read (for various reasons), and I really like having summaries available at short notice (since you never know when they do eventually have main story impact again). Plus you summarize so well :)
that is something that I would like to see.
Yes
Side stories for characters who had cards in the set.
An oddly low key story for innistrad lol I suspect the next set will have some real drama with crimson vow
It's kinda nice to have a "small drama" after dealing with the Eldrazi on our last visit.
i would love a full tilt Spanish telenovela level of drama please :D
Honestly, I think the background side stories and background cards are more interesting then the plainswalker shenanigan's. It's a fun set either way, but there's a real dissonance between the brooding horror and... Light up The Night
Story time!
Also, I saw another request for Legendary Angels ranked by L.O.R.E and I want to support that request
It’s funny how with every recent set, I’m equally excited for the cards themselves as for these lore dives. Much appreciated!
I love the idea that there's a planeswalker hall of justice on Ravnica probably in the recently repurposed Bolas's Citadel
You won't believe the amount of paperwork you have to fill out just to get inside.
When we inevitably return once again to ravnica in 2 or so years it'll be interesting to see how everyone has reacted to knowledge of Planeswalkers, the total devastation of the city, and just generally being the unaware and involuntary battlefield for a war between these extraplanar beings, the citizens are going to be in total unrest with maybe a few attempts to unite to rebuild but the whole plane has been *shook*
@@Red-Tower The entire land of Ravinca isn't really shook; It's in shock. You could even say the entire war made the plan into a Shock Land...
... I regret nothing.
Can you do a history of Praetors? They’re a really interesting group and I’d love to know more about them. Love your content!
I recently did a look at the history of the Phyrexians, but the next time they appear in the current storyline I'll probably talk about them again, yes.
So happy to come home from work to see a new Arcanum video! Thanks Ryan and Nicole!
i'm just happy we're getting two set stories again, it's nice to actually get story then have to anticipate what's gonna happen next.
Love these lore videos for the newest expansions, keep up the good work :D
This is already making me interested in the next set. Thanks again for your great re-caps of the story! You rock!
I love when yall do this. Magic story lines are fascinating and fun to hear, and while i love being able to pick some up from card text these videos help frame it :). I also love looking at the effects of each card, and what they do in the story. Its like going "oohhh" when solving a problem.
There was on theory for how Sorin may have escaped that I kinda liked. In the War of the Spark, when the Planar Beacon was activated, it gave him the ability to focus on it and planeswalk out of the stone. It would also make sense as to why he would go right back to fighting Nahiri when he arrived on Ravnica. That said, I also like the idea that he clawed his way out over time.
Also thank you for this, I've never been entirely sure where to find the story that comes with a set so this helps a lot! I've read bits and pieces here and there, but didn't know the whole story. Based on the summary here, I really liked it.
While I've enjoyed being able to play with Innistrad for the first time (I wasn't playing during the original Innistrad or Shadows), I still feel like no can story can top the arc of Jace/Vraska's complicated relationship on Ixalan.
That's one of my favorites, too.
@@MagicArcanum Honestly I was disappointed in how that played out. I thought there would be this great epiphany or revelation that he had manipulated her memories and she would come in clutch during the WotS, but no, they just had her murder Isperia in cold blood :/. That along with the tragedy of the published WotS novel made me want to ragequit the whole thing...
@@squidworth2570 War of the Spark made everything from Time Spiral through Theros 2 worse. Almost everything before War of the spark was made worse by the fact that most of those stories were building towards War of the Spark, and as you noted, the pay off was just disappointing. Then it made Theros worse because they canceled it over how bad War was received, and the cards were not ready for that heavy lifting. My point is, everything in relation to War of the Spark becomes worse. Hence, my recommendation is Jace and Vraska got off the island, and we never heard what happened to either of them ever again. It's just a great mystery like a TV show that was canceled on a cliffhanger..
you sir have perfect timing i just star the day wit my coffee and you upload this !!!! bravo!!!
Enjoy!
After this I'm hoping that we get snow again in this set to highlight the winter/climate change element of the deadly night that has fallen on Innistrad. Also, I really need more different art for my dimir snow altcons deck.
Yeah it is curious how often they mentioned the chill and the frost on the ground, along with the fact that we already have snow stuff in standard.
@@MagicArcanum making Crimson Vow a snow set also lets wotc hit another area of horror. The Thing, The Shining, ASoIaF and the raft of Scandanavian cold-weather thrillers that has gotten popular via streaming services recently. Also, what would you even call the last real Climate Change magic set, Ice Age?
@@briankuczynski6884 Coldsnap maybe? Which was technically a part of the Ice Age, even though it came out many years after the original. I'd say Zendikar with all it's insane land and elementals qualifies enough as climate craziness. Lol.
@@briankuczynski6884 oh wow now that you mention all of that I really love this idea. Especially since MID had a very Autumn aesthetic seeing it transition into a snowy dark winter would be very *cool*.
@@Red-Tower i just remembered that there's a movie and comic explicitly on this premise: '30 days of night', wherein vampires run wild over a town in the arctic circle.
Dennick is a funny ghost, he thought that someone finally wants to visit him to pay respect but not really, then his final word "can I go now?" XD
Wow, this is likely one of the best stories they've had in years! It has been SO long since they've told something that feels as active and intriguing as this.
Yay, a new story time ! 🥳
Thank you for this, Cards and coffee, and all the past videos.
I've seen "light up the night" multiple times already while playing and didn't even put together than Chandra is in this story arc **smh**.
Can't wait for my Arcanum coffee mug!
Autumn themed settings are a base 7/10 in my book. It's a great draft set to. This might be my new favorite.
Love these videos buddy keep it up
Starting now, but THANK YOU for posting !!!
Thank you for explaining!
My theory for how Sorin got out of the wall is that the interplanner beacons ability to force plansewalkers to Ravnica pulled him from the wall after he had done sufficient damage to the wall, explaining the scratches and blood
NEW MAGIC ARCANUM VIDEO LETS GO
Great video as ever. My favorite part was the side story of Wrenn & Six/Seven. When they were released in MH1 I was so intrigued bu character design, but couldn’t find a lick of information on their lore, so their short story with Teferi really freaked my beans (in a good way).
Love the video.. and the cookie you ate before it.
It is very fitting that the 13th video in this playlist is about Innistrad.
I really enjoyed the story quality for this set - it definitely wasn’t amazing or anything but I had fun with my time reading it. I hope they keep the quality level going back upwards in the future
You deserve way more subscribers man!
Best kept secret on CZcams :-)
I love the harvest theme!!! I wish there were more jack-o-lantern and Halloween inspired cards (and pumpkin tokens!). 🎃
Fun video as always, you two 😁
So, what did you think of the story? To me it was a bit meh, not too bad but nothing special. Not much happens. Days are getting shorter, people need to do the ritual, the werewolves try to stop it and Olivia ruins everything in the end. SOI and Eldritch Moon stories were much more interesting imo. Every week I was glued to the screen at the mistery happening.
Also, I liked the moment where Nahiri put Sorin in the wall, since it had that poetic justice. Sorin did the same to her when he put her on the Helvault. And he gets out just like that? By chewing and clawing his way out? Felt too easy. From the image it doesn't seem like he could even face the wall to bite it.
The moustache returns! Thank you guys because I could not figure out what was going on at all based on the art and flavor text alone, which is a step backwards from previous sets which were much easier to parse
Soooo basically Chandra and Kaya are there to be the group's flashlight and vacuum cleaner?
Yes, yes exactly.
Canada is also experiencing longer nights...
Time to form a cult and perform a ritual that allows us to continue sledding until midnight on Christmas eve!
Love that crumb in the mustache till like 5:04 love the werewolves in the set
It was actually a drop of water from my green cup that just caught the light funny. I don't have any food in my recording studio, a holdover from the rules in film school :-)
To be fair even with the Parasite Blade I doubt Olivia stood a chance against Sorin. Also the Blade is made out of Sorin's own magic and essence so I don't think that it can even be used against him.
The hole in the ceiling at 7:30 is actually not just a convenient plot-fixer; it's left over from when Avacyn broke through just before Sorin unmade her. So it's quite significant, and it's understandable why seeing another archangel fly in through his ceiling would make Sorin so irate.
Sorin unmade Avacyn in the basement of the cathedral in Thraben, not at his own house.
magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/i-am-avacyn-2016-05-18
As was pointed out I think you're confusing the fact that sorrin busted through the roof of the cathedral
Magic arcanum : *exist*
Audible : *profusely sweating*
Was hyped for this!
Been waiting for this. I have no idea why CZcams decides to hide these videos form me...
*Going some-what off tangent here
It feels like they are painting another mega long game here since the eternal night is kind of implied to be the consequence of sealing Emrakul into the Moon.
The Tudor belief of "the moon makes you mad", the origin of the word Lunacy/Lunatic and the Titan's madness inducing influence, all point me to believe it so.
I don't even read the lore I wait for Ryan now it's just better
Yessss I’ve been waiting for this video!! I’m here once again to chip in and put a comment for the algorithm 👍 I’m kinda upset that Chandra and Kaya doesn’t get a planswalker card yet Teferi does. I mean can’t imagine Chandra having a card that could have a innistrad theme but Kaya for sure should have had one considering she’s all about killing ghost and spirits and whatever kinda of a shame that we don’t get a lot of planswalkers in this set considering there’s a lot in the story :(
Chandra and/or Kaya could still appear in Crimson Vow later this year. There's just not room for everyone in the first set.
I think the blend of main story and side stories in MH were very good. The last one with Liesa finally coming back was great to me! Makes me think that the angels that were lost during SoI and EM can reconstitute themselves when enough hope and prayer is out there for them to come back. Honestly it’s just good to see that Sigarda’s flock might have some help in the near future.
7:29 So Sigarda gets in from a convenient whole in the ceiling and knows the key is in Sorin's room 🤔👀
Midnight Hunt did live up to my expectations, and my expectations were pretty low. So many deus ex machinas and glanced-over plot points. Thanks for this summary. It's such a time saver.
I enjoyed this story a bit more than the previous sets (granted I only listened to your summary). I feel like how Innistrad is progressing as a plane makes more sense, compared to the others.
My hope for a 4th Innistrad set is that Crimson Vow doesn't deus ex machina a fix for the eternal night. While it may seem like a rehash of SOI, I'd like to see WotC explore the madness associated with the lack of a proper day/night cycle. Things are going to be difficult for humans, so I'd like to see how they either persevere with renewed faith in Sigarda or adapt to nightlife, as it were. Plus the lengthening night was associated with Moon'mrakul, so there's that connection to explore (maybe getting her out of the moon will fix things? Who's to say, that's probably years down the line).
You mention the nights getting longer and that made me imagine a card or mechanic that could keep nightbound around longer despite two spells cast. That would of been interesting so long as it was balanced
6:55 oh yes. I hear that all time
If you haven't seen there also is a planeswalker guide and small bio's for the legendary creatures as well.
Yep! I try to leave that stuff for other videos, and use the "What's Happening..." series for covering only what is expressed via the story spotlight cards and/or accompanying publications (web fiction or ebook or whatever)
My thoughts of Sorrin getting out after giving up with his attempts to free himself. When the beacon to the planeswalkers happen for the fight against bolas. He probably accepted the beam and zooped and saw Nihiri for his fight.
As for Magic authors giving information or left open plot holes/ stories. They have constantly left more questions than answers when it has come to Innistrad and it's many stories left unanswered.
My question to you is... Do you think Avacyn's absence is causing the longer nights, or do you think Emrakul tapped on the moon is weighing it down to where it's loosing momentum till the eternal night?
I'm glad that Teferi's participation in the story was as badass as the title of his card this time around. It makes me wonder if they'll slowly start to give each planeswalker a "definitive moment" that feels almost *mythologised* by a Who Does the Thing card title, because despite all my gripes about Nissa, Who Shakes the World's power level, the flavour the card name invites is nothing short of glorious, like with this awesome new Teferi.
I also feel like Sorin's done too much angry teenagering lately, so I hope we get to balance it out a bit with some of the rough-cut noble intentions his earlier efforts for Innistrad were borne of in Crimson Vow.
sweet vid!
I really liked the story, and I'm actually super pumped for Crimson Vow now.
Sorin and Olivia cards for sure, and I'm really hoping for a new Chandra seeing that she's here and we haven't gotten a new mono red planeswalker in standard for a long time now. And, with Fateful Absence being a story spotlight, please a new Edgar Markov that doesn't instantly make me the archenemy in commander.
In the War of the Spark novel, it's said that Sorin heard the planar beacon and focused on it to escape the rock. Which is why he was on Ravnica for those events.
It never said that, unless you've got an exact page number I missed?
YAY STORYTIME! I am excited.
🎉
@@MagicArcanum I always love these stories for the different sets. I listen to them at work usually. So I do want to say thanks for doing them.
"Schemed his way back to the procession of his sword". I think he had to go to Olivia and offer a trade.
I'm surprised you didn't end video with more thoughts on possible Emrakul theories/involvement.
I'm just sad there is apparently only three legendary werewolves on Innistrad. Here's hoping we will see at least one more in crimson vow.
I really enjoyed the Liesa story, and left me wonder about how she and Sigarda could form a better way to protect humanity, she could play a bigger role since she is the only angel that dwells with the creatures of the night. I wish we see more of her and the way she helps humans
As always I love how you tell the stories of Magic lore. Just have a question. Do we know what Chandra or Teferi were doing while the rest of the party were looking for the key? What about Wren? Do we know what she was doing on Innistrad during all of this? Thanks.
Wrenn appeared in their own side story and had no connection to the main story (which I was covering in this video.) I might talk about her in a future episode, though.
In the story, Sigarda announces where the key is, and Chandra, Kaya, Teferi, and Adeline all run off to get it, with Arlinn staying behind to help the angel fight Sorin. Sigarda tells Arlinn she'll be ok, so then Arlinn goes and catches up to the group, already in Sorin's personal chambers.
I'm not sure why Secrets of the Key show only Teferi and Arlinn discovering the key, but that's not quite what happens in the written story.
I think a part of the story spotlight cards are detailing the history from what happened between Shadows and Midnight Hunt, maybe?
I just want a part of one of these stories where Will and Roman show up on summer break and do nothing except show up on various cards sipping mojitos or buying souvenirs to take back to Professor Onyx
The bad guy vampires and werewolves aren't thinking through the ecology of this. If the sun never rises again, the crops die, the grass dies, and the trees die. This means all the humans, all the livestock, and all the game starves to death. This means the vampires and werewolves have nothing to eat. The werewolves will starve to death. Depending on the vampire lore, the vampires will either starve to death, or live eternally in the agony of perpetual starvation and weakness.
3 months late - can't believe I missed storytime! 😥
I think the dire-strain rampage is showing one of the side stories, the one that's in the orphanage that's super spooky (my favorite one, I just don't recall the name rn)
events maybe not necessarily live up to par but some cards are certainly powerful
I just realized your mustache is the Gatecrash set symbol
I really hope Crimson Vow explains a lot more of Sorin and Olivia's involvement. They need to explain how he got out and got his sword back. Plus I hope he is the next big bad.
I hope to god Sorin decided to agree to Olivia's "Marriage of houses" and thats how he got the sword back. I'd love to seensome sort of crazy Vampire wedding Mardu enchantment and if we do get an Olivia her name is now Olivia Markov.
Liesa coming back to life seems like kind of a big deal, will we get a video about maybe all the angel sisters?
Her return is covered in one of the side stories and if there is enough demand for that, I could cover them in another video, sure.
If Crimson Vow doesn't include "how Sorin got out of the wall" that would be a great appearance in the next Core set. Assuming there is a next Core set...
This is all really cool and I love hearing the world lore of each plane and those who live on them.
But I just really, really want to like Sorin and he makes it rather difficult.
I hope Sigarda slapping him with some Avacyn antidepressants helps set him on a better course of behaviour.
Never underestimate the power of handwaving.
My head cannon with Sorrin and the wall is that the beacon on Ranvica gave him something to focus on through the pain and that's how he manages to rip himself free, and that's why he only fights Nahiri on Ravnica because he literally just got out of her trap and wants revenge.
I really had no expectations for the werewolf part. I guess it did the job but it’s ultimately a failure so it will be overshadowed (no pun intended) by the Crimson Vow vampire part. That will have a lot of expectations, like how spring got out of the wall and got his sword back.
I still think that whatever pulled all the planeswalkers to Ravnica for War of the Spark pulled Sorin out of the wall.
"Dire-Strain Rampage" seems to show the current general state of a new breed of werewolves rampaging. Chronologically it's probably somewhere at the beginning of the Midnight Hunt story.
I personally loved the Leisa story and would have loved to read more. I find her fascinating.
Yeah same. Wearing the shell of a demon as armor is kinda badass.
Lisea coming back is the coolest thing and i hope she gets a mythic.
I liked Midnight Hunt, but I just wanted more story. Especially about what the world has been like since Emrakul. It was still a good set, just left some things unexplained
Agreed. Some of that is covered in the side stories, but you'd think such a major event would be more present in the main stories, too.
@@MagicArcanum And I know characters like Thalia and Odric will be in Crimson Vow, but honestly I’d love a second Innistrad Art book to cover everything that’s happened now.
I thought this online story was better than most of what has been released the last few years but it was a bit flashback heavy for my tastes. When I finished the last installment I didn't even realize that it was over. Yes, it was left open to lead into Crimson Vow but it just felt like Arlinn's story wasn't completed.
Ah yes, finally!
