  • @w.w.2restorations.vehicles698

Good job B.A. When you pulled the M-37 out of your shop, my eyes were drawn to your horse shoe hanging on the wall. I'd like to offer a suggestion, turn it over so that the "open" end is up so all the luck don't keep spilling out. You're on a great roll with your stable of nag's and I wouldn't want to something adverse befall your location.

Its funny you say that, over here, the Big controversy is, one half says, oppening up makes it “the devils swing”, and if you flip it over, then the luck drains out.
So what to do do, what to do.

Great Job on M37 Trans Rebuild!
I was in 4th med Bn, 4th Inf Div, (1965 - 1967), with a whole fleet of M37B1 Ambulances and a couple dozen M37B1 trucks. At Ft Lewis the trick was to keep drivers from messing with the governors and throwing a rod -- Later in Vietnam they performed pretty well, dry or soaking wet!
In 1974 I was core drilling at Purkeypile in the Alaska Range and rebuilt the brakes on Dave's WWII M37. M&O Machine in Fairbanks introduced me to silicone copper lube to coat pitted (unavailable) brake cylinders (all of them), it worked great! We had brakes on the old truck that season!
Look up Purkeypile, the claims dated from 1921 (Jiles and Knutson). Dave "Cat-Trained" the truck into the property from Nenana in the spring of 1958 behind a Dew Line surplus "8A Serial" D8 tractor, (on a sled carrying the truck and a surplus ? Core Drill Rig (like the one at the Silver Fox Mine near Fox) and a wannigan for sleeping).
Fix up the truck a little more and it will carry you into the Nabesna Mine with your camping gear!
    Regards...

Know what my youngh friend?.... I really enjoyed the 2 vids you made of this old truck. It really warms my heart that there are guys like you who care so much for a proud old war vet of a truck. For one... you know what you're doing as far as I could see from your footage. The truck on my avatar (88' Isuzu p'up 4x4) I completely built out of 4 trucks (3years of patience). Now I thoroughly enjoy it as my daily driver That is why I enjoyed your vids so much. In my country, you just dont get trucks like that, and if you do, you got to be a millionare to just buy the old "scrap" for fixing. Keep it up, best wishes for the new year ahead from the Western Cape South Africa.

Great stuff. Cheers Mike in Louisiana

It is a cool old truck, amazing that you could find transmission in a junkyard. I live in the southeast part of Missouri if you go to a junk yard around here you will be lucky to find a part for a 1980s car or truck, the parts for 70s or earlier are super rare and a 1950 part will involved a few hundred miles of driving.

Just make sure you don't use dot 3 or 4 brake fluid. The military uses dot 5 full silicone brake fluid, its not acidic based so it last for ever in the brake system. If mix the two i have heard it does bad things to the brake system.
I love watching you work on these old boys and girls, have a fleet of army trucks my self. 5 five tons, 1963 gasser to 1971 diesels. Your doing a great job, slow and steady brings them back to life.
