Why As An EXPERIENCED Rider, I Still Own A CRF250L..

  • After 3 long years of ownership, and many bikes later, why do I still own a CRF250L.. I've had everything from a DRZ400 to a CRF450L and yet the only bike that still remains is the trusty 250L. We have been through a lot and I have used this bike in almost every way possible, it's not particularly great at anything but why do I love it so much?

All bikes are only as good as the riders skillset , like Ryan on Fortnine said put a set of off-road tyres on a Honda Goldwing and get it too the top of a mountain eventually.😂
I had a R9T that was unfortunately stolen
so with some of the insurance money I’ve bought a CRF 250l , had one a few years back and regretted selling it.
So I’ve just bought another .
Front fork spring and oil upgrade , Acerbis plastic belly pan and frame protection and handguards and a YSS rear shock with some Renthal bars she’s ready to go .
Still got rear rack and soft luggage from my old one , can’t wait to get out in the woods .
It’s a good bike that with a few extras can be a great bike .
    Love it .

First of your vids I've seen, good stuff, I've got the 300 rally, not so many trails or good weather days in the UK so it made sense to get something with a bit of fairing, my suspension will be sorted as soon as it turns up. 80 odd MPG (uk Gal) Thought I would miss the power, I did for a little while, now I just take the roads less taken and I absolutely love the little honda. Keep the CRF videos coming, it's great to watch you flying about.

Insightful video. Thanks. I agree with you on the 250L. The mild manner and comfort is what makes the 250L very endearing. The 300 is really tugging at me. Your video also highlights why it's impossible to own just one bike for all the riding one does. I sold my 250L and got a wr250r, and eventually a 250 excf to do more aggressive off road ... the excf is not a lot of fun on a Sunday road and gravel ride ... just like the 250L is not great at funky single track.

I swapped my 2017 CRF250L a few weeks ago. I put 11K miles of off road miles on her so I do have a soft spot for the 250L and always will.
I swapped her for a 2003 RX250R, there are things I miss, like a battery, my heated grips in the sub zeros as I ride 90% of the time at night and fuel injection.
But the XR is 40kg odd lighter, if she stays reliable I will be very happy as the XR is a hoot to ride. Biggest worry is that parts are not easy to come by in the UK>

If the CRF250L is a Miata it's an NC, 'cause the XT225 would be the NA and the XT250 would be an NB. And the WR250R would be the S2000! Just my opinion off the top of my head. Actually, a lot of good 250-350 bikes out there. And it looks like the manufacturers are settling on the 300cc bikes. For the shorter, less muscular, budget limited riders the discontinued XT225 and DR350 are great choices. And they're lighter than the golden child CRF25OL in this video. (Oops, didn't mean to poke you in the eye)

It's nice for you to keep something for the long haul, especially the 250L. This week, I'm rebuilding my CRF230M with a high compression piston and some other goodies to get more life out of the machine I had since 2014.
And after some serious consideration, I have decided to go out and spend my hard earned money on something else.
Never thought I would be in the market to buy a pair of Crocs to go riding in.

Your story is remarkably similar to mine except with WR250R. Kinda slow but fun to mod and reliable as water. I switch to supermoto setup for Hot summer months. Like the chan.

I've rode several motorcycles all the way up to the 2014 1832cc valkyrie, I recently sold it and bought a 2017 Honda rebel 300cc, before that I traded a seadoo for a 2022 klr650 which I unfortunately hit a deer with and totalled, instead of going back with a klr650 I ended up getting a crf300l which is actually an awesome bike, I've had my fun with sport bikes and cruisers but I am so happy I picked up riding dual sports and the crf300l is an absolute unit of a bike, my wife rides the rebel 300cc which we have lifted and are soon to put fat tire knobbies on it, we plan on going on adventures together, best part is that both engines are the same.

Tanner, I've noticed a lot of guys will upgrade to a larger fuel tank and then when they get another 250L they keep the stock tank. Do you find you really didn't need the extra fuel????? Trying to decide whether or not to pull the trigger. Thanks.

Hey Tanner, I bought a 2017 250L about a year and a half ago with about 2000 miles on it. I havent ridden it much but i thought i take the skid plate it came with off yesterday and i found a couple dents in the frame on the bottom. Do i need to worry about these dents or should i just forget and ride? Thank You Rob Cheney

Which super moto/ dual sport do you think is close to equal to performance on and off road? I'm looking to do dirt riding with the family but I need to sell my xsr900 to help pay for machines and a trailer. I know I won't get the same street performance as the xsr but I want to get as close to it without sacrificing off road capability as well. I plan to run two sets of wheels and tires one for each discipline. I'm just trying to get as close to the best of all worlds as possible in terms of power, handling, and maintenence/ durability. I've been riding on the street for almost 20yrs but have little dirt experience.

i bought a 2015 2 weeks ago with 18000 kms , possibly the best horse in the stable , it s light, well build and alive. what i like about the bike is it makes me a better and happy rider , just enjoying the ride for the pleasure and fun of motorbike experience . i was a hooligan and piloting the roads, tracks. i traded all of that for a great transport to go from A to B , while riding to Z , just because it will go. Great bike , great possibility, don t forget to stop and take a pix cause it will take you to those places.
already 1200kms of, roads, dirt, sand, rocky hill and technical low speed roots, it did perform better than expected ,the bike has it s limitations, but i think that balance the whole package of this dual purpose machine. Nice one Honda , this bike fit perfectly in my lifestyle.

I've been looking for a dually for quiet some times to continue my hooliganism. Do you guys recommend a CRF250L, CRF300L, Yamaha, or DRZ400? Yes I'm aware of what's carb or fuel injected. It's just that I've never been on a dirt bike before but would like something lighter than a GSXR750 to throw around on.

I have the same relationship with my XT250 Yamaha. Have an amazing Husky which is great, but I'm always putting more time on the xt. I'm only tempted to replace it now by the new crf300 & rally.
