    Appreciate the shout out buddy. This was a great video. Sounds like you’re considering all the right factors in creating your firewood plan

    Pretty sure you want to split the wood and then check the moisture content in the middle of where it was split. The outside dries quick. I can read 15 on the outside and 30 in the middle...

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, you are right. I did split a few pieces to check in the middle as well but I didn't get that on video. Thanks for mentioning it and for watching!

      Anyway you can reupload the video and have you checking the middle? Many years doing this and the consensus is always resplit a piece and check the middle.

      After splitting the wood it's good to poke the prongs inline with the wood grain as well, gives a more accurate reading

    Splitting by hand is a great way to left off steam if you're upset. Not only do you work out frustration, it's productive. An added bonus is good exercise.

      Totally agree with this! Sometimes what you need in life is a splitting maul/axe and woodyard full of rounds.

    This will be my second season selling firewood. Started with a bow saw and a maul. This picked up considerably though I still split by hand. I love it actually. I realize even a small log splitter would increase productivity but hand splitting is the part of the process I look forward to. Thanks for a great video!

    I too sell wood on the side. If you don’t have a wood splitter get a 4 ft chain and hook a bungee cord to and use it to wrap the logs. You can crank out the wood so fast. It directs the force so well. That what I do to get my wood a nice size.

    Running my saw is therapeutic for me too. I agree with marketing cooking wood here in Texas. Post Oak and Live Oak are my favorites. Always let mesquite season a full year before cooking. It leaves and awful creosote aftertaste otherwise. It’s a great wood if seasoned properly.

  • @zone4garlicfarm

    I sell about 5 cords of bundled firewood each year. My method of bundling is to lay an ATV tire on a workbench and stand the wood in the tire. Then I wrap it in plastic stretch film. It's fast, easy and every bundle is the same size. I sell from an unmanned honor system stand at the end of my driveway. There's a 50 site campground on my road so I have a steady market from May-September.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  Před 3 lety

      @@OldSchoolMillennial Bundled kindling is another big seller. I use a 46 ounce tomato juice can the same way I use the tire for firewood bundles. I work in residential construction so I have an abundant supply of scrap pine to split into kindling. I charge $4.00 for a bundle of firewood and $2 for kindling. Those prices make it easy for the customers drop a $10 bill in the cashbox and take 2 firewood and 1 kindling.

    Interesting how you measure the moisture content. Never seen somebody measure it from the end. When we measure will take that piece of firewood and will split it in half and then test the very center again. And we often find that how it measures on the outside of the wood can be different from the center of it. We have found a lot of wood that is over 20% even it’s a 30% in the center after we split it as opposed to the outside it’s obviously going to be the driest. I wish We had wood here that was good for barbecuing we just don’t get that in the area of Utah that we live in. Good video! And good luck!

    It seems like you should be able to sell a lot of bundles in Texas. Here in Michigan I use wood for grilling. I have plenty of it and I don't like spending money on charcoal.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  Před 3 lety

      Yes, people around here are pretty serious about their BBQ and they often prefer to buy by the bundle. I agree and food tastes good cooked over wood. Thanks for watching!

  • @edsmith4414
    @edsmith4414 Před 3 lety

    I don't understand the problem with that Eston splitter. Seems like almost every time, especially on the first cut, it throws the almost split piece back toward you instead of pushing on thru. I have a 4 way wedge and that never happens unless there is a large knot or crooked grain. I think they have a design issue in their wedge.
