  • Hello bird fans,
    This week's video discusses the only pellet brand we actually recommend. I go over the reasons why I think this brand is the best on the market and for your pet bird.
    I'd like to give a big thanks to ‪@NorthernParrots‬ for sending the pellets over to me to film this video. If you're doing any shopping over the Easter period I'd highly recommend them!
    Don't forget pellets are not an essential part of your parrots diet. BUT, they can make a good supplement as part of a diverse diet.

    There is a link just been discovered between Topps pellets and over egg production in female birds as they have a high fat and mineral content than other pellets available on the market
    We experienced this very issue our selbs with our Cora producing far to many eggs when she was being fed them

    • @TheParrotTeacher

      Could you point me to the article on this please as we haven’t had any highlighted to us by our science sources! ( we are very active in the community on this )
      There have been established links between high fat and protein content in other pellets however as it simulates over abundance !
      Of all the pellets for this to be an issue with I’d be really surprised if tops was highlighted over so many others!

    I use TOPS as one of the ingredients of dry mix I feed in the evening. I like the whole food ingredients in TOPS and the fact that they are not processed under high heat like most pellets.

    The only cold pressed pellets are Top's pellets and Birdtricks pellets. These two pellet brands are the only ones I trust.

    Our GCC wouldn’t touch the smaller tops pellets unless it was baked into birdie bread until one day I had to buy the large pellet - then he went nuts for it! He likes to hold it for eating and seems to enjoy the crunch & destruct of the bigger pellet.

    I've always fed my cockatiels Harrison's thusfar, along with a seedmix with dried fruits/veggies (we're STILL trying fresh, little luck so far). I wonder what your stance is on Harrison's pellets? I've had two vets recommend it to me but they never mentioned Top's so far, though your video brings some compelling arguments to the table to switch to Top's.
    - EDIT: At the Harrison's package they also mention a whole list of added vitamins and minerals, it's a pity I can't find that information about the Top's pellets.

    • @TheParrotTeacher

    I got a sample pack of Top's pellets off their website in the US ($5 shipping). My local bird store also sells them and other pellets. Unfortunately, my cockatiel hates them. He was raised on Roudybush pellets, which I know aren't the best, but it's all he wants to eat (along with fresh veggies and seeds for treats).

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 5 měsíci +2

      If he’s getting a mix of other things that’s good! Maybe over time you could phase the rowdy out!

    • @claiyageil
      @claiyageil Před 5 měsíci +1

      Actually, Roudybush isn't that bad. But if you want diet conversion ideas, you can powder Tops on stuff he loves (like his favorite seed mix/on the Roudybush) or bake it in birdie bread. This will get him to taste it. Have the pellets available in his cage 24/7 so he can explore and play with them. When you want them to try something new, you have to explore ways to get them to try it. Most of the aren't going to just go for it. It took six months to fully diet convert my teil on to fresh food. He was one stubborn little s**t.

  • @mydraco99

    Feeding my conure these, and converting the new lovebird over to them aswell. only downside is how crumbly they are so seems like alot of waste.

      Birdy bread.. If you give your birds birdy bread, put the newest remaining dust in there.. it's just an idea I use myself to help save on that waste.

    great video. i have just converted my GCC to Topps. He has been really hormonal and i was reading that the soy and corn in pellets could help make them hormonal. He was having Harriisons. Have you heard of this? is this somthing you agree with? The only negative i keep reading about Topps is that they are lower in Vitamin D3. Altough i do have a parrot lamp and i give hin a bit of egg yolk now and then

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 3 měsíci +2

      So it is possible that high fat or “filler” ingredients can have an influence on hormones.
      Generally pellets won’t have much d3 in them you mostly want your bird to get to at from sunlight or whole foods that contain it (I have more in depth pellet videos worth watching including discussions with experts)
      I like tops best mostly due to how it’s manufactured!

    Northern parrots are brilliant for everything bird related. My parrots eat Topps. I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing because I give them processed pellets, Topps pellets, freeze dried food (mikey and mia) shelby human grade seeds , sprouts and fresh fruits.. I mix it up.. I maybe over feeding as I'm never sure with Topps how much they've eaten.. any idea how to keep an eyes on the amount of Topps they actually eat?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 5 měsíci +2

      So it’s really good you try to feed such a good mix of foods!
      Advice wise I’d try to feed more fresh and balance out the other bits!
      Generally there’s a guideline for small parrots. 1 tablespoon in the morning, one in the evening (generally we do fresh in morning and dry in afternoon or evening)
      You can adjust this depending on your individual bird and also weigh regularly.
      Further to this if you have medium or large it’s 2 and 3 tablespoons respectively
