    "Dial with your ears nd not your eyes" is the best advice I have ever heard. It sounds so obvious but it wasn't to me. It's important to note that every amp has different amounts of EQ values, and even though most amps have the same/similar knobs, bass, mid, presence etc. These knobs doesn't represent the same amount across all amps. if you take 2 different brands of amps and dial them the same, they'll not sound the same.
    When I got my boss katana, I opened up the EQ settings and made it look like those well known pictures from MOP Mesa 2C+ of the EQ that looks like a V. I would just put that in my boss katana without listening to what is sounded like. I would play with it and thinking "this is what they used on MOP so this is good." It wasn't until I started to actually listen that I went "this sounds like poop."
    So thank you a lot Euge for giving me this seemingly obvious advice. I think you are one of the best guitar youtubers. You are honest, humble, straight to the point and incredibely skilled. I learn a lot from you and love your videos. Have a nice day and take care!

    So people like Euge are breath of fresh air aside to a lot musicians because not only are we all in absolutely total joy with playing our guitars.
    But to learn ability as well whilst we’re all at home in our houses/flats developing recording techniques an lot of us can really hone in the skills of our production too.

    I never dialed amps in like this before watching you do it. I watched this video and some of your others quite a while back and the other day I noticed myself doing this while dialing things in and I realized at that moment that I was doing the thing Euge demonstrated. Thank you! I love dialing all the way back, then working my way up, just hearing the different shifts that happen over the sweep of the knob. There's always small variation, and then bigger shifts that happen along the sweep. Very interesting!

    @Lordofthethings2 Před 3 lety +5

    That first minute right there explains it all. Every amp, every pedal, and I'd say every guitar has a great sound. You just need to have a skilled ear, talented hands and know how to hone it and use the gear. We currently live in times when amazing gear is extremely affordable and available to anyone and everyone and not just to top notch players. I see so many people chasing endless gear, still being dissatisfied and end up blaming the gear and bashing brands for their lack of talent. I grew up in the 80s when we had next to nothing, and remember watching Satriani playing on a tiny Gorrila practice amp and still sounding awesome as always. If you can manage to sound great on the most basic of gear, you have it in you.

    Unbelievable playing and great advice! I bought an SD-1 a few days ago because of your videos. I basically play stock Les Paul's and SG's into a stock JCM800 2210 head thru G12-65 speakers. I tend to keep the gain low (about half) on the amp so it doesn't get fizzy, but I use a Radial Tonebone Plexitone to drive the amp for heavier stuff. It always sounded a bit flabby in the bass. Now with the SD-1 in front of the Plexitone, the bass and overall tone has tightened up considerably. Thanks for the tip!

    Is this why I sometimes play better with my eyes closed? When I’m trying to figure out a tune, I get more frustrated when I’m playing or listening with my eyes open. When I close my eyes, it starts to come together faster and more accurately. Thank you for your awesome videos. The best part is the opening. “Hello. I am Euge Valovirta.” You should do voice overs. :)

    Hi Euge, very informative and well played as usual. For those of us who don´t have a reactive load and play a ridiculously loud older marshall like my -79 JMP master 2203, getting to the master vol sweetspot is painful for the ears. Someone told me a useful eq-trick, dime the middle and cut pretty hard on treble, bass and presence. Middle on ten seems to push the amp nicely when you cant turn up the master as high you wish. Works for my amp, maybe helpful for someone else😎

    Hi. Huge Respect Euge :D One thing I wanted to say in regards to your excellent amplifier tone videos is: I have never employed an overdrive pedal. I love the sound you get. I love the sounds of others when I like their music as well. I study *this stuff* as I we are wont to do. My rig is minimal effects-wise. Marshall JVM410JS, Holy Grail Reverb in the loop, wah, tuner, guitar. I use 1 channel for my rhythm and leads (Van Halen-esque) with the 2nd master volume for boost. Another channel is for a hot, plexi sound (Hendrix/Purple - you know). The 4th channel I have the gain dimed and I use that for my occasional forays into DEATH/Slayer etc. territory. I always use slightly hot Alnico II or V pickups. I like the convenience of this setup. If I had another amp I might be inclined to go the route of the 2203/OD approach. It is all so very fun and interesting. And uhh...expensive. :P
    At any rate, CHEERS man!

    Another great video Euge...Seems like a big part of your sound is the Suhr RL. Do you use it in live situations with a power amp as well? I think I need one for my 2555x Stack as its simply too loud to get the sound I want. I also have an old school ADA MP1 rack setup that sounds much better at the lower volumes that runs through a power amp

    Really good video, thanks. I like the philosophy, use your ears. I find if I change speakers I have to dial the amp in again. I notice though you use a lot more gain than I do. One thing I’ve found with these amps is that because of the bright cap, where you set the preamp control has a big effect on the tone. I tried playing with the amp with preamp 6.5 and it was way too bright, but turning the preamp to 8.5 got rid of the screechy highs.

    After watching this vid I realized I need an Overdrive pedal. My tone won't sound so flat otherwise. It will definitely help with the pinch harmonics.
