So far, I'm extremely pleased with this kit. It looks absolutely fantastic and there is very minimal glitching that I see (and most of it seems to be caused by the DMG itself). Unfortunately, like the MGB kit, this kit has a serious impact to battery life. Thankfully, it's not nearly as noticeable with the DMG's four AA batteries vs the MGB's two AAA batteries. Also, the bracket that I made for this kit actually uses slightly different spacing than what I had anticipated so I will need to revise my design, test new brackets, and do one more install before I can share those. I assumed that the LCD would have the same spacing as the MGB version but it looks like the image is moved to a different area of the screen.

Funnyplaying also has a 3D printable bracket (see install guide linked below).
My PCB based bracket is currently being fabricated, I will add a link when I confirm the fit and dimensions.
The Link's Awakening DX glitch that I saw is also present in the MGB version of the kit.

Love your videos. It's fun to see you encounter problems and then how you overcome them
cant wait to get mine working! that retro pixel effect looks gorgeous!
Finally, this is the kit I've been waiting for.
Your videos are full of content. I wish they were shorter though, over an hour for this mod seems really long. But keep making them!
I'm eager to see more info about the Retrosix products.
15 minutes in "I don't think I'm finishing this video!" --over an hour left ~something tells me that might not be true..... lol
Just finished the movie, I enjoyed it. Also that top line glitch is a Zelda DX thing.
Great video, thanks! I've been following for my own install but don't want to wing it when positioning the screen. Any idea when we'll see some 3d printed braces or tips for centering the screen properly?
Funnyplaying made their own bracket and the link is already in the description. Retromodding just made one today too and I'm putting a link in the description shortly.
Nice video sir makho. Currently have RIPS v3 on my DMG. Do you think the FunnyPlaying is better should I replace my RIPS v3?
I wouldn't replace it, but I do like the FP kit more than RIPS
I didn't use the adhesive on the pocket, I did stick the adhesive down but didn't take the screen side off. I got a thin piece of foam the size of the screen and put it in between the PCB and screen. It's holding it in there snug with no movement event when tapping it. In return I was able to get the screen 100% correct with no commitment
Hi Makho! Thanks for your videos, they are very instructive. I wanted to ask you a question. From your point of view, which screen of the ones you have tried is the best for the DMG?
Thank you!
Toss up between this one and the "moon screen", really. My notes on the subject are here: www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/grrsrn/my_notes_on_all_game_boy_backlight_kits/
@@makho thanks!
@drencoss If you check the spreadsheet I linked in the description, you can see what I extrapolated.
Thanks for installing and showing this Kit. Is it possible to get such an alignment circuit board bracket from you? Greetings from Germany
When I have a design that works, I will post the source. I do not sell them directly.
Amaizing video! Can you say where do you buy the blue case?
It's one of retrosix's new DMG shells. I'm working on a review of the shell, should be up soon.
Nice video and demo! How does it compare with to the button handling on the RIPS V3 kit? I installed that kit in mine and the buttons just feel off. Not at all as responsive as the original PCB. I noticed the new PCB is thicker as well.
Seems fine to me. The only button related issues I'm having are due to the shell molding. When the A or B buttons don't get physically stuck down, all the inputs register exactly as I would expect.
This is what I mean by stuck: i.imgur.com/6YrcETO.jpg
makho there’s been a few posts on Facebook groups with the same issue 😐
Adam James Did anyone post a solution?
@@TheJamesydesign About what issue, the button inputs on this new kit or the stuck buttons on the retrosix shells? I've only experienced the latter.
I just want a t-shirt that says "and..." On the front and "Bob's your auntie" on the back.
Would also be cool if it looked like a circuit board
I've done some testing. My GB (cpu ver. 08) on 11th brightness setting (there are 15 steps), with Warioland (demo in loop) and 4 AA white Eneloops (1900 mah) lasted 14h 45 min. Not bad at all IMO.
I really need this video because got that kit and need to learn how to properly enlarge the screen window. I tried myself and I really messed the case ffs. I assembled it temporarily but I get a really scratchy sound, maybe I need to clean the volume potentiometer or change the speaker with some brand new 3rd party one.
Looks fine. Thanks for making this video.
May I ask, if you would prefer this one or the "Moon" IPS?
And which one is your favorite Game Boy IPS kit overall at the moment?
It's pretty close. I think they both have their use cases though. I'm leaning towards this one.
Thank you very much for the quick response! :)
Hi @makho, I have installed this kit but I have some weird problem, I have the screen fricker when I turn on The game boy, after some minutes The fricker gone. Is this a Kit problem or is my motherboard?
Have you heard of this Retrosix company? They apparently make super nice replacement housings/shells for Gameboys and stuff. I've been tempted to purchase one
retrosix is a joke
@@makho thanks for the info. I had seen a video on some of there stuff recently and, I trust you Makho.
@@makho oh jeez. I'm at work so, I'm watching this in bits while I'm on my breaks. I just realized that you are using a Retrosix shell. They look nice but, I don't like the branding and other changes.
@@pupupupupupupupup I'm working on a video about it but the short version is that the guy behind R6, Luke, is a total tool on social media. His electronics are way out of spec and he lies about that kind of thing constantly. If you ask him for tech specs, he just calls you a troll and deflects. It's a complete joke.
Let's also not forget about the time he tried to call out Retromodding for copyright claiming them on something (what R6 claims happened makes no sense) or that time that Retrosix tried to use BLM to promote their business.
I recently learned that electroluminescent backlights are/were a thing in gameboys for a time, and I bet a nice green one would look pretty good on a DMG. I also have been trying for a while to search for possible *frontlights* rather than backlights/screen replacements for DMG-001 gameboys, like the style of the AGS-001, and I wonder if you know of any solutions that someone has already figured out, rather than me potentially going full-custom if I decide to try it
With how easy it is and how much better the results are, most people go with backlights, even on original screens. Frontlight method would be the same as any other LCD though, look up GBC or NGPC frontlight installs.
Do you think soldering in that regulator would make the front PCB compatible with Pocket display? :P
Possibly but I think it would be more work than it's worth. I wanted to try out another Game Boy Pocket AIO TFT backlight kit but I didn't feel like trying to figure out where I can safely tap the aux power. All the required signals and power should be present for that kit at least.
What brand is the shell you used?
I have a stupid question again. This KIT use high voltage from a stock DC-DC converter?
Nope, stock is fine. My console is unmodified otherwise.
My sister and I got gameboys for Xmas in the 90s. They were bought on the same day from the same store (and I have kept them all this time). My sister's is yellowed exactly like this one (only on the front, and the back is fine), but mine is not yellowed at all (it's white on the front and back).
Not sure why only the front of one of the two units is yellowed. It seems odd to me also.
UV exposure is known to increase the onset of yellowing. You could also just have consoles that were made with different batches of plastic.
You said you were getting a new 3D printer. Which one would you suggest/ get?
I bought an Ender 3 Pro on a whim. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to 3D printers so I hope this one does what I need to my satisfaction.
@@makho I was looking at that one too!
It's my impression or you forgot to peel of the protective film on the screen? It was on purpose?
like I said, I left it because I will finish the install later when I get a proper bracket. I have my bracket fixed (hopefully) and on order and my new 3D printer should arrive some time this week at which point I'll probably print funnyplaying's bracket (and retromoddings, whenever that comes out)
Hi there, I'm planning to mod my DMG with FP IPS retro pixel kit. Do you think I need to replace the original voltage regulator on the motherboard? Would the "Clean Power power supply voltage V2" from Retro Six add some benefits? Or is just useless? I really want to make my DMG the best. thanks
you would be downgrading your DMG by installing one of those power supplies.
@@makho you mean EVERY voltage regulator or THIS ONE?.
@@madesmad9935 this one especially
Mine came covered in flux too lol
You should get a plexiglass cutter for future mods
That poor gameboy give it some love the poor game I love gameboys
Is this better than the RIPS V3?
I think so, yes
I think I prefer the RIPS mod. No cutting and just as clear. I can live without the grid option.
I think that's where the Moon Screen kit shines then. Zero modification required and has all the features this kit has and then some.
Where can I find this shell?
handheldlegend.com or retrosix.co.uk but I really cannot recommend it.
I believe this is the video you were referring to around the 1:07:00 mark with the freckleshack screen and the frames
edit: my bad, I forgot to actually link the vid lmao czcams.com/video/YZCmvE9a9WA/video.html
Is anyone making different coloured screen lens for this kit?
I've only found grey/original style replacements, I need a black one.
there's a new 2.6" kit coming out for DMG really soon (if not already) and those lenses probably work for it. Check out "Cloud Game Store" on aliexpress.
@@makho Damn, hope it's not some mega superior upgrade cause I've literally just ordered the Funnyplaying Retropixel DMG kit the other day. Thanks for the tip I'll check it out.
@@makho ahh dude that looks horrible to install. A total step backward compared to the IPS V3 and the others.

@@makho appreciate the help dude I've ordered a black lens 👌 how's the golden Gameboy Color holding up? Was just watching that video today.
Do not leave in hot car lol
Why retrosix shell?
all my other shells need retrobriting or screw post repairs and I figured this would give me an opportunity to actually check these shells out (I'm not happy so far).
I think you better don’t use the screws which come with the shell, they are not Machine Screws, all the retrosix shells give the wrong screw even their ugly GBA shell.
@@gnuhc315 the screws provided by RetroSix for their GBA shells are perfectly fine for their intended purpose... not had issues building my GBA mod using RetroSix GBA shell kits and accessories... i still prefer origjnal GBA membranes but the RetroSix ones are good enough... but their GBA shells are just pure excellence... i think i have bought 15 so far... no defects or quality issues... they consistently send out great quality shells and id recommend them... for anyone not wanting to use their shells then there are plenty of companies you can buy from... JellyBellyCustoms.... Game Gorilla... Funny Playing... and many others... right now modders are spoilt with the sheer number of aftermarket shells we can choose from... the scene has a very active community on Instagram and FB and i have learned alot from CZcamsrs like Makho and others and just talking about things that have cropped up in my build on the FB Groups... also @makho are you active on Instagram or FB and do you have a page i can follow on either platform? my Insta is @retro.zero.uk
anyways i love your informative videos... for me your process really engrosses me and i love how you approach problems find solutions... its helped me alot just watching you work... so thank you!
i wanted to see ahegao.gb
Bad man Makho makes bad videos I know cause he told me on discord
Nobody cares about your fancy gadgets. Just replace the dam thing already. lol
Nobody cares about what you think
Jesus, your videos are too long, over 1h now.
Oh man, I'm so sorry that I forced you to sit down and watch the whole thing. It must have been a nightmare!
@@makho Maybe include timestamps for the end for "tests and conclusion" to make it easier to find? I sometimes just skip around at the end until I see the game on the screen.
@@makho I prefer your full install videos, thx
i prefer a long in-depth videos that covers everything that crops up rather than a 5 minute clip...
So what I’m hearing is to buy the bracket
I do recommend it for the FP DMG kits. It takes a lot of the room for error out.
