Hearing a re-telling of A Little Life's plot was when I realized I don't trust books that are only famous for being sad. Seems like there's literally nothing else to that story.

I 100% agree with you regarding A Little Life, I did the same and read the Wiki page and that's a nope for me for pretty much the same reason you mentioned. As for Colleen Hoover, I doubt she will change since she got a movie deal for It Ends With Us and has so many people praising her for her books, I refuse to read her books as someone who actually lived in an abusive relationship and believe me when i say, there is NOTHING romantic about it!! Same goes for anything labled "Dark Romance", SA and abuse is really not for me. As for anything with smut, I am uninterested in them, I do enjoy romance with some intimate scenes and usually close door or fade to black are my preference, no shame to people who enjoy smut, I just don't enjoy "watching" other people have sex.

I read it too and although I enjoyed myself and had fun in the beginning (exactly because of how corny and unserious it seemed), I actually fell out of it the more I read. I would rate it a 2/5, some things didn't sit right with me, but the potential was there for just some fun and light read

In my opinion Magnolia Parks is Not Good BUT there was some quality to characterisation in the first book that still managed to hook me really well. It's one of those series that is impossible to say one way or the other, unless bad writing makes it truly impossible for you to enjoy a story, because it's all about your connection to the cast of characters. I hated the experience of reading those books, but I miss those characters like old friends. It's worth giving a try in my opinion, but don't try to push on if you don't want to. Pick up the book and read a few chapters, and you'll know very quickly if it's for you or not. It's also worth noting (despite what people say) you CAN just read the Daisy Haites books on their own, and you can just read the chapters of the people you care about. It's not that deep, you'll be able to follow the plot lol.

As someone who loves tragic queer love stories and queer books in general you can not pay me to read a little life it’s just trauma corn for straight girls that love fetishizing gay men and have never read or even thought of reading a gay/queer book written by a actual queer person. Also the writer saying she doesn’t care when people asked her if she was exploiting gay men and writing gay torture corn really rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe open your mind and hear actual queer people out on their opinions about your books instead of just using them for profit.

I personally thought Magnolia Parks was insufferable. I dnf'd at 100 pages or so, but other comments are saying they liked it so maybe I should have pushed through. Part of it for me was the plastic bag in the wind FMC, which is my least favorite kind of character.

I quite enjoyed Magnolia parks... in the same way you would enjoy gossip girl by just being there for vibes and low-key hating every character and relationship... I found it very entertaining but yeah the relationships are SO toxic and not something to be modelled. I think if you go in with that mindset they can definitely be very entertaining. It might be worth a try!

I absolutely agree with Tessa Bailey. I read one book by her and was not crazy about it so never again. I felt similarly about Lock Every Door. It’s my least favorite Riley Sager that I’ve read from him so far. I have 3 more of his to try and so far The Only One Left seems to be the only hit I’ve read from him lately. We’ll see what happens. Another author I absolutely refuse to read is Elle Kennedy. Years back I found out in her Off Campus series she wrote her male lead characters as misogynistic so I swore off her books and have not read her to this day. I’ll probably never read her. And also I tried Never by Jessa Hastings and DNFed it so I probably won’t ever read Magnolia Parks. Plus I despise footnotes in books so most likely I won’t ever read from her again.

The "gay" characters in A Little Life (I’m operating on the assumption that this is in reference to Jude & Willem) aren’t even gay. It’s explicitly stated in the book. The relationship makes perfect sense within the context of the book and serves as a reinforcement of theme, but to make it seem like the book is extending its tentacles to target and throttle any gay person throughout the narrative is highly misleading.
