When I hear an actor died in a car accident I ussually assume they were speeding or being reckless, cause actors usually are... and I am ashamed to admit I wrote it off at first with this. But no, care started rolling when he was doing maintenance, such a tragic way to go

This movie is way too underrated. It's honestly my favorite in the trilogy. Also, even as an old school trek fan, I appreciate this series for its own worth. I think some fans cant seem to separate their knowledge and love for original trek and the new timeline set up by this trilogy. I appreciate that this timeline does not interfere with the old one. The old timeline is still intact and therefore old school fans can still love and appreciate it. But for new fans, they can enjoy this trilogy as well. Personally i love both timelines for different reasons :)
"ST: Beyond" is definitely one of those films that deserves a lot more love than it gets

@@notmee2388 You must be near my age, I was in my teens when I saw the Search for Spock. I can still remember everyone cheering at first when the bridge explosion killed the klingons. But it was followed by absolute silence watching her start to disintegrate across the saucer section. By the time she had exploded and started to burn up in Genesis atmosphere the quiet had turned to crying and sobbing. Some would say we were fools crying over a movie object. But we grew up watching that ship, it was more than just an object, The Enterprise is a character in its own right. It was a home for our adventures with the cast. Seeing your home burn is not an easy thing. We had lost Spock and were unsure of his status going forward. Then the Enterprise. It really felt like an ending. Then came The Voyage Home and the we knew that we had the crew( our screen friends) back together. Then we saw the newly christened Enterprise A. The cheers were deafening. We knew then that the adventures were not over. Great care had also been made in the novel and the movies that the One Ring is a character. It reflected on what turmoil it caused and how it affected the characters. In this case its destruction was a form of freedom to the characters and we knew that we might be able to have more time with them. . . to quote Bilbo : " I think that Im quite ready for anther adventure"

Kirk's line "I ripped my shirt again" is a reference to TOS, where Kirk would quite often rip his shirt while on away missions. He's also sporting a more TOS haircut.
Kirk drinks Saurian brandy in the iconic bottle from TOS.
Sulu's boyfriend is carrying a small girl. This could be Demora Sulu, helmsman of the Enterprise B from Generations, but she should have been born a few years after this film.
The "Not unknown, only temporarily hidden" speech is based on a similar quote in the original series.
The Kelvin pods are named because George Kirk didn't have an escape pod near the bridge when he died fighting Nero.
The "Giant Green Hand" rumor is based on "Who Mourns for Adonais", a season 2 episode of TOS
Edison/Krall is a MACO, a sort of Starfleet Marine featured in the prequel, Enterprise. He talks about fighting the war with the Romulans, which starts just after Enterprise ended, as well as the war with the Xindi, which is in Enterprise's third season.
Commodore Paris could be an ancestor of Owen Paris and Tom Paris from Star Trek: Voyager.
The credits font is an italicized version of the one for Star Trek II.

A detail that I love is from the scene where they're initially evacuating the Enterprise. Kirk tells everyone to get to their Kelvin Pods, the pods that they use to evacuate from the main deck. The U.S.S. Kelvin is the ship from the first movie that Kirk's father died on. The Kelvin Pods were designed and put into ships so that what happened to Kirk's father wouldn't have to happen to anyone else.

It was action-packed with some clever set pieces (ie defeating an evil fleet of drones with Sabotage), somewhat low stakes, and I liked the dynamic between all the characters (particularly between Spock and Bones). It sucks how the team behind this film chose to disrespect Takei after, and how it comes across as them wantint validation and being upset when not getting it.
They called him saying they were going to do it as a tribute to him. Then he specifically asked them not to because he felt they'd be changing what Gene Roddenberry established, and he felt if anyone should be honoured on the *50th Anniversary*, it should be Roddenberry. They then decided to do it anyway and said they felt Takei was wrong and that it was a shame he felt that way. They also made excuses to his request to make an original character gay instead, claiming that doing that would make them come off as a token gay character, which is utter bullshit when they have Keenser and Jaylah. They could've made both of those characters gay, and Keenser especially disproves their argument, because he's been an established character since 2009 film.

I strongly suggest that you keep going with Star Trek in some fashion, but since this is such a large franchise, it'd probably be best to watch select episodes first and then go from there.
One way to start would be watching the Pilot-Episodes of the Various Series to get a feeling for their respective Crews and settings, to catch a glimpse into what they're about:
"The Next Generation", Season 1, Episode 1 is called 'Encounter at Farpoint'. You already watched the TNG-Movies and several Episodes, but it doesnt hurt to watch the Pilot, I think. It is far from being TNGs best episode, but it does a good job with worldbuilding and introducing the setting.
The first Episodes of "Deep Space Nine", "Voyager" and "Enterprise" are called 'Emissary', 'Caretaker' and 'Broken Bow', respectively. Each provides a good starting point into these Series. DS9 is actually my favourite Series of the Franchise. Since its more serialized than the others (especially in the later seasons) its quite easy to binge.
If you are brave enough to take a look into where it all began, you have to go waaay back to the 60s and "The Original Series", where Kirk & co made their debut. Technically, that Series has *three* Pilots:
    - 'The Cage' features an almost entirely different Crew (only Spock is already present) and has a rather slow, measured pace. It wasn't picked up by the Studio but they liked the concept well enough that they allowed a second Pilot to be made, provide some changes were applied.
    - 'Where no Man has gone before' introduced Kirk, Scotty and Sulu and was more action-oriented. This time, ST was picked up and started production.
    - 'The Corbomite Maneuver' was the first produced regular Episode and marked the first appearence of Bones and Uhura
Finally, there are the four newest Series of the Franchise: "Discovery", "Picard", "Lower Decks" and "Prodigy" (the latter two being animated). The first episodes are 'The Vulcan Hello', 'Remembrance', 'Second Contact' and 'Lost and Found', respectively.
Now, I find "Lower Decks" enjoyable enough (havent watched "Prodigy" yet) but actually don't like "Discovery" and "Picard". Infact, I detest both shows.
BUT I won't try to force my opinion on you. Best you make up your own mind. And since you liked the post-2009-Movies so much, perhaps these newer shows are your cup of tea. Sadly, they're just not mine. But to each their own.
Overally, I enjoyed having made this journey with you and glad you got so much fun out of it. Live long and prosper🖖

@@TuomasLeone When DS9 first premiered, TNG was on season 6. It suffered by comparison, as the TNG crew had their roles well established, and DS9 was working the bugs out. DS9 Season 1 was better than TNG season 1, but when running alongside TNG season 6, it was the lesser of the two.
But when you view them separately, DS9 absolutely holds its own. They both kick into high gear around season 3.

This is the best AOS movie for sure, and Jaylah is one of my favourite “guest stars” on any Star Trek ever, but I go back to 2009 a lot more often-Beyond is kinda too violent for me. I do like dark, thrilling action movies, but I’m rarely in the mood for one of those AND a Star Trek at the same time, if that makes sense. (Also, putting Idris Elba under that many prosthetics is almost as big of a crime as Zachary Quinto’s wig in this one, lol.) But *otherwise*, this one’s a shitload of fun, and that “Sabotage” scene is ICONIC.
You’re probably getting too much advice about watching the TV shows for any more to be useful, but for whatever it’s worth, it kinda doesn’t matter *how* you get into TV Trek. Everything before 2017 was made for old-school syndication, which means it was designed to be jumped into by casual viewers at any point, in any order, with minimum pre-knowledge. The new (2017-present) series have a lot of haters, but everything these days has a lot of haters-watch and judge for yourself. The new shows don’t really connect to each other, so dive in at S1E1 of anything, but you’ll enjoy Star Trek: Picard more if you’ve watched some TNG first, and Star Trek: Lower Decks has a lot of reference jokes, so you may prefer to save that one for later.
    Live long and prosper!

Been a Trek fan since Kirk and crew were the entirety of the Star Trek universe, so I find it funny when you say this journey has taken just over a year. Your enthusiasm for these movies means a lot to me and reminds me of the excitement and anticipation for every new movie and series since my mom took me to see Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock. Before the 09 movie came out, the future of Trek was in limbo and nobody knew if anything would come next.
The point is,Personally, I think the new shows are awesome, but I've always been grateful to have some form of Trek in my life. I'm glad that you and The Next Generation is still watching Star Trek.

As this was released in the year of the 50th Anniversary, of original S'Trek, this film had a number of nods to the collective history of TREK. When this was released in 2016, it was not as financially successful as "into darkness" was, oft' blamed on other big films of the year like Marvel, and Star Wars, etc -and Paramount put the next Trek on hold, for "reasons". Yet, in recent years, "Beyond" is often in people's top 5 ST film lists. I did my part, seeing it three times in cinema, taking friends -giving a disc to my Brother's children, and viewing with them as Uncle. I am glad to see more admiration for "Beyond" here -and also hope for another movie, with this cast (and Jayla, taking the place of Chekov).
As a fan of ST:Enterprise, this film is also a delight that it acknowledges the events and technology of the 22nd Century, before the Kelvin alternative time fomed. With the USS FRANKLIN being a Warp 4 ship, with Capt' B' Edison' and crew serving in Starfleet, as MACO (special forces) in the battels with Xindi, and the Roman War, in 22nd Uniforms and the recorded glimpse of a shuttle,...late two seasons of Enterprise, and never seen, but referred to by orig' Trek (Earth-Romulan War)...ST: ENT had been the unloved series, for a while, which is getting acknowledgement, these 20 years later (well, much of it) "Beyond" helped to link tv and movies again.
The death of Leonard Nimoy, with the historical Spock in this film, acknowledged with all dignity. The unfortunate death of Anton C', as Chekov, after this film was complete, he had good scenes and character development, in this his last film of Trek. Really, all the characters grew, and had scenes to show their depth!
Simon Pegg & Doug Jung (Sulu's husband) wrote a fine script. I have never seen one "Fast and Furious" film complete (-not my thing!) but, Justin Lin, is an awesome talent, even just for directing "Beyond". Fine choices for guest cast! Fine new landscapes! Not repeating another "revive old character" like they mistakenly did with Kahn! This was the most original Trek film than there had been in years (where the continuity was fun if you were a fan, but you could go on the ride without -IMO). Bring back this cast! Build a world like Yorktown! I want to strap-in to the USS Horizon and fly into battle, with some "classic music" from Earth! We need more!!! :)

    @bemasaberwyn55 Před 2 lety

Just prior to this film's release, Anton Yelchin who played the Kelvin version of Pavel Andravich Chekov passed away suddenly. Also when this film was being written, Leonard Nimoy also passed. So the dedications in this film were because of that loss. This film was the 50th anniversary celebration of the Franchise. So if there was that kind of reverence you noticed, that is why. I saw this film in theaters and loved it. Then on September 8th 2016(50 years to the day) I watched it for the 3rd time, after finishing the rest of my 50 year marathon(going through the entirety of the franchise up yo that point). When that picture was opened, it hit me hard. A few things of note, 1 the bits with the Franklin and Edison himself were refrences to the final live action series produced before 2017. 2 there were great callbacks to the 2 previous films. 3 the saucer separation, Sulu's Daughter, and Yorktown were call backs to ideas producers had in previous films (Demora literally wears a Starfleet uniform around 12 or so years later in the other timeline). In addition to the 13 films you've watched, there's 8 live action series and 3 animated series that have been produced since 1966, with a 9th series gearing up for release. Totalling in over 800 entries(1 episode/film is an entry) of this franchise. Ik you've seen a few episodes, but there's A LOT in this property 🖖

I grew up with TOS - not first run as I was still a baby during that time on NBC, but definitely from the first run in syndication in the early 70s and ever since. I loved the movies (even The Motion Picture). Even though Star Wars came along just before TMP, and I am a big Star Wars fan as well, I never let up on Star Trek. Sticking with it through The Next Generation, and yet I do like the re-boot run as well. The 2009 movie was loads of fun. Into Darkness was one I didn't like so much because I never thought they should have done Khan. I hoped and prayed that they would not do Khan, but the entertainment media seemed to push the narrative that they should do Khan and for some reason Paramount and Abrams listened, and then did it. The villain in Into Darkness could have been anyone and it would have worked just as well, and we did not need the shot-by-shot replay with role reversal at the end. But Beyond redeemed that in my mind. I know this last outing wasn't as financially profitable, but I think it was just as good if not better than the '09 movie.
This from an old dog TOS fan.
Which I still watch on occasion to this day - but only with the original '60s SFX (available only on blu-ray)
