- What is Songkran like in 2022? Was water play banned in Chiang Mai for songkran?
In this video I take a look at downtown Chiang Mai in search of some Songkran spirit… and find out that there are still some locals who can enjoy the festivities.
We finished the day with some pineapple fried rice and a fruit shake.
Maybe Songkran will be better in 2023!

I visited in 2019 and the water festival was amazing. Im sorry you didn't get that experience fully - but you clearly loved the little splash along the way! Good that you hat that taster. 2023 will hopefully be better and back to a more normal style of celebration!
I walked into Songkran when I arrived in Bangkok for the first time in 2009. We were staying at the Pathumwan Princess. Attempting to wander through a wet MBK centre was certainly an experience!!
Oh that would have been AMAZING. Im a little jealous we didn’t get the full experience now that I’ve gone and looked at old videos from past songkrans but it’s okay, there’s always next year to try again! You’re so lucky to have had that experience!!

Songkran festival is one of the most important festivals that has been performed for a long time, not only in Thailand but also in other countries such as Laos and Cambodia.
เทศกาลวันสงกรานต์ เป็นเทศกาลสำคัญที่มีมานาน และไม่ได้มีเฉพาะในประเทศไทยเท่านั้นแต่ยังไม่ในประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน เช่น ลาว และกัมพูชา
It is also known as Thai Traditional New Year’s Day, which falls during April of 13th - 15th every year.
เทศกาลวันสงกรานต์ ยังถือว่าเป็นประเพณีส่งท้ายปีเก่าต้อนรับปีใหม่ของไทยตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ เริ่มตั้งแต่ 13 - 15เมษายน ของทุกปี
The word “Songkran” derives from Sanskrit language and means to pass or to move into.
คำว่า “สงกรานต์” มาจากภาษาสันสกฤต แปลว่า ก้าวขึ้น ย่างขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นการนับปีใหม่โดยวิธีนับทางสุริยคติ
Songkran festival takes place over three days every year, on the 13th - 15th of April.
วันสงกรานต์มีทั้งสิ้น 3 วัน คือวันที่ 13 - 15 เมษายน ของทุกปี
Do you know of any activities during Songkran Festival?
Yes, sure…Songkran is very famous.
We know that most of people splash the water on each other.
But I also know Songkran tradition is an important custom for Thai families, community and religion.
วันสงกรานต์นี้มีชื่อเสียงมากๆ และในวันสงกรานต์เราก็จะเล่นสาดน้ำใส่กัน แต่นอกจากนี้ประเพณีสงกรานต์เป็นประเพณีที่สำคัญด้านครอบครัว, ชุมชน, สังคม และศาสนา
It is a great opportunity for family members to gather together, so…what do you usually do when you see each other on that day?
การที่สมาชิกในครอบครัวได้มีโอกาสกลับมาพบเจอกันนั้นมีคุณค่า
We express our respect to our elders by pouring scented water onto our parents’ and grandparents’ hands.
แปลว่า เราจะแสดงความเคารพต่อผู้ใหญ่ด้วยการรดน้ำผสมน้ำหอม ลงบนมือคุณพ่อ คุณแม่ หรือ ปู่ย่า ตายาย
The elders in turn wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity, so Songkran Day is also Family Day.

I forgot to wish Michael a very good health and good fortune too, now that you both got douse with water to wash away bad luck and negative energy. Glad you two enjoy the Songkran, albeit small. I didn't have good memory when it comes to me dousing "farang" when I was a child in Nakhon Panom. This female farang, she was in the military and was probably in no mood to celebrate, so, when I was dousing her, she knocked the bowl out of my hand. I was about 8-9 years old and she was 20 or 30 something! The grown ups in the neighborhood watching in disbelief of that farang's attitude. I am so glad you are having fun, and being nice about it. The irony was that she, the mean Farang came back from where she went, SOAK AND WET!🤣🤣🤣

In normal situation you would be soaking wet !!! Kids enjoy the festival the best. We used to load up a water tank at the back of pick up truck and have a water fight. So so much fun. Enjoy traveling in Thailand !!!
