Of the trillions of great songs ever recorded in history, "Smoko" is near the top of the list. Great music and hilarious lyrics. Big shout out goes to DEAD KENNEDYS for their influence on The Chats and thousands of other Rock Bands
Someones gonna have to explain how 3 days ago i hadn’t heard this song or of the band. I saw wet leg do a cover, justin hawkins dissecting it and saw a poster for their new album today. Feels like the truman show
NO,no,no,no, the studio version is at the perfect tempo. The LIVE tempo is good for getting a crowd whipped into a frenzy though. The studio version is menacing and humorous at the same time. Their singer is very threatening when he looks over his sunnies much longer than was necessary.
original tempo is probably better for the studio version because the lyrical humor comes through a lot better. The live version is great in this setting though-- energy turned to 11
To be the bassist *and* also the lead singer is actually quite impressive. They're both rhythmically opposites. A lot of people would call this kind of music "noise", but the setup of The Chats is actually insanely impressive.
When we use a forensic psychological approach in regards to the notion of 'smoko' we may very well conclude that the song is a death throw lament for those halcyon days, when for many , the entirety of the day was in fact 'smoko'. Lumbering 'ne're do wells' like myself, menu planned the whole day around 'smoko' . Clocking on with a heavily sauced bacon and egg roll. Morning tea, buttered iced sticky bun. Luncheon , a 'dog's eye' , also heavily sauced. A cardboard cup of hot chips covered in 'dead horse' for arvo tea and then evacuate the work site at the declaration of 'pub now' ! Now 'smoko' has been reduced to 20 minutes on an upturned milk crate and brave is the soul that pokes that bear. The spitting scowling lyric " Im on smoko , so leave me alone" is inextricably linked to the undeniable and historic truth that everything can be best achieved when nothing is done at all.

Daaaamn I loved this song when it came out and was so happy to see it kind of common on my tiktok fyp so it had to have had some sort of blow up on there, so deserved these dudes fucking slay and I love how much faster and aggressively they play this live, absolutely crushed it!
We saw them do this in Southampton in the UK earlier that year. I love that they sped it up. TBH I thought they were going to be shit but they're definitely not shit. They are brilliant at what they do!
The singer/bassist is so talented that he is also in the crowd watching himself at around 1:12!

When you wanna go on a smoko but you gotta play a song for a big ass crowd first.
That explains why he turned it into a speed metal song!

Truth but to be fair they're not exactly running the most complex setup haha

It's on the nose but I think that's intentional. All I know is whatever punk is, these fuckers have it in abundance.
Not for punk music tho where the bass and guitar are rhythmically same
i love how much australia loves this band
when your boss cuts your smoko in half
It was cool to see his younger self in the crowd
These three guys were born to punk rock, its written in their DNA.
