LYRICS:
Some of them were dreamers
And some of them were fools
Who were making plans and thinking of the future
With the energy of the innocent
They were gathering the tools
They would need to make their journey back to nature
While the sand slipped through the opening
And their hands reached for the golden ring
With their hearts they turned
To each other's hearts for refuge
In the troubled years that came before the deluge
Some of them knew pleasure
And some of them knew pain
And for some of them it was only the moment that mattered
And on the brave and crazy wings of youth
They went flying around in the rain
And their feathers, once so fine grew torn and tattered
And in the end they traded their tired wings
For the resignation that living brings
And exchanged love's bright and fragile glow
For the glitter and the rouge
And in a moment they were swept before the deluge
Now let the music keep our spirits high
Let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky
Some of them were angry
At the way the earth was abused
By the men who learned
How to forge her beauty into power
And they struggled to protect her from them
Only to be confused
By the magnitude of her fury in the final hour
And when the sand was gone and the time arrived
In the naked dawn only a few survived
And in attempts to understand a thing so
Simple and so huge
Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge
Now let the music keep our spirits high
Let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky

No stage, no flashing lights, no gimmics, just two brilliant musicians and a song for the ages that is as relevant today (Oct 2023) as it was when it was first recorded. Thanks, guys....
I took my 16 year old son to see his first Jackson Browne performance at the Beacon, NYC. He sat in the theater with a crowd averaging 50 - 75 years old. He sang every word to every song and turned around to me and said "thank you for being my dad", brought tears to my eyes and I realized I had raised him better than I could've imagined and on the music of Jackson Browne. Many years earlier (1986), I saw JB at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. I was trying to get into the backstage party, the security guys were roughing me up. Jackson was walking by and saw the ruckus, he stopped, reprimanded the security, took me and my girlfriend into the party, gave us beer and introduced us to Paul Rogers and Bad Company. We talked for a good while and had a lot of fun. A genuine, beautiful soul, poet and musical genius. Thank you for the tunes and the inspiration.
I was lucky enough to see JB at The Hammersmith Odeon in London a few decades ago then more recently at Birmingham Symphony Hall. He's just brilliant and I never ever tire of his soulful, insightful, beautiful lyrics and music. Thank you for giving and showing us so so much ❤️
My husband & I took our 2 grown sons to the Beacon to this concert! They grew up listening to JB with us! Perhaps we were at the Sammie concert, @ Bob Stevenson? JB is my all time favorite singer/songwriter ( next to my son!)
How lucky were you?
That's a beautiful story. I saw him at the same theatre in 96 and even Jackson would admit that theatre was horrible! I wanted to see him so bad and I could hardly hear him. With that said, I had such a wonderful boyfriend who made it happen and I still have the tee shirt. Praise Jesus for good boyfriends! It was the only thing I ever wanted so it was still fabulous. I'd love to see him again.
You can’t buy that stuff! 👍
If you don't love his music, please find your soul
Jackson, thank you for making my life a song. Your gifts have helped thousands! Forever in awe of your talent. The words, the music, the presentation-have changed lives, thank you.
....when the light that's lost within us reaches the sky...God bless you, Mr. Browne
The words to this song are as relevant and touching today as they were in 1974. This man is a national treasure and I am so fortunate to be on this earth with him.
It's funny, because this was released only 5 years after Woodstock actually happened, yet he was writing as if it were 50 years prior, such was the pace of changes back then (as well as now, I guess?).
Of course, being only 18 at that time, 5 years seemed like an eternity to me anyway.
I’ve often been moved to think that Jackson and his good friend Warren Zevon were aliens transported here from another time, such is the prescience of the lyrics of their songs. Perhaps there’s a simpler answer - that the words are timeless. I dunno. That’s what life’s for, right, to give us time to figure some small part of it out.
I seen Jackson Browne with my ex-wife Portland Maine I was blown away before the Deluge was one of his many songs that he did that night best concert I was ever in in my life I went six more times after that one time in Philadelphia two nights in a row on the 7th concert my mother nicknamed me Jackson Browne because my last name is brown I'll never forget that now that she's with Jesus up in heaven I'm sure she still calls me Jackson I couldn't be more proud
I have been listening to this Jackson Browne song for the best part of my life. This recording with Val McCallum has got to be the best. Jackson's vocals have not lost the sincerity of his written words. Val's guitar mastery is unmatched. There are not too many musicians that sound as good or better than they did 50 years ago. Jackson Browne is one of them!
Jackson and Val playing together is pure magic. Only thing better than Jackson Browne is Jackson and Val performing together. ❤
An absolute national treasure! To think he wrote these important songs in his 20s and 30s when I was still trying to figure out how to cross the street and chew gum without getting run over
Jackson Browne's solo tour in 1998 or 99 was my 7 year old daughter's first concert in Asheville, NC in a very small setting. We were on the second row and he was about 10 feet away from us. She said, "Mama, that's THE Jackson Browne, right there." It just goes to show you can have a one man band and still kill it. We love his music. As soon as we'd get in our car to go on a road trip my son would say, "Doctor My Eyes!" and we'd put in the cd before we left the driveway.
A national treasure. His songwriting is genius and he hasn’t missed a beat in his performing skills. I have loved Jackson Browne music for over 50 years. Never gets old.
I really enjoyed what you share here 😊 so glad to hear that.
How are you doing today?
This is the first song that I played with my dad about 20 years ago. He was singing and I was playing guitar. Every time I listen to this masterpiece I feel in peace with the world. Love frome Rome Italy Jackson. Thank you for your music. I hope my daughter will enjoy this beautiful song too.
What a great version of this classic song. I had the pleasure of seeing Jackson Browne twice in Dublin with my daughters and they are now big Jackson Browne fans.
Val McCallum, plays with such emotions, and player that truly appreciates his playing with Jackson
@Val McCallum accompanies Jackson Brown on lead guitar so beautifully in this timeless Before the Deluge. Jackson can play anywhere, in his home studio during a world wide pandemic or on stage anywhere in the world. He is timeless and beautiful.
I really enjoyed what you share here 😊 so glad to hear that.
How are you doing today?
One of the most talented song writers of our generation. Beautiful lyrics and melody brings true emotion to us.
What a beautiful song. Followed Jackson songs for almost 50 years
this guy doesn’t even sing about God , but his music is sacred to me
I grew up on the Tennessee River. I now am into TennesseeRiverKeepers. I have been pulling garbage out of the river most of my life
Certainly one of his most beautiful songs and that crosses the years without taking a wrinkle!
Thank you for all the love that we pass on.
Friendships from France (Bordeaux)
Ain't nothing better than listening to Jackson Browne when you're relaxing and just let his amazing music wash over you...Magical.
My dad has listened to Jackson Browne since I was a wee girl. He has never been online or used the Internet, I cannot wait to show him this video. Love from N. Ireland ☘
Beautiful old song well resurrected-an environmentalist before we all were!
in ‘74 i was 16, and i “called the road my home”, and this album drastically changed my perspective on life. now, after a lifetime, a lot of us are going back to the road. Thank you for those songs. -C
Jackson's voice sounds as good as it ever did. So much soul in it.
Not bad for 72
I noticed that!
Among the most sublime songs ever written.
I can't find words that have not been said by others to express my feelings for this fellow and is amazing craft, and how fortunate we all are to share our brief moment with him.
Pretender and Late for the Sky still pull at my heart strings and bring back a world of memories. Stunning songwriter and musician. Love ya Jackson 💚❤️💚
The brilliance & genius of Jackson Browne's lyrics is timeless. We are so lucky & privileged to have been blessed by his unique ability as a songwriter, a singer & a person of special ability & a truly unique understanding of human emotions.
Well said.
Jackson, you are aging gracefully. You look like an old man, because you are an old man, but you still have that fire in your belly it makes you special. We love you Jack, keep on keeping on.
Endless love for this spirit that goes by the name Jackson Browne.
"And in the end they traded their tired wings, For the resignation that living brings" - Genius!

Agreed.
So full of Pure Truth! Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall inherit the Earth.
So perfect for our time ... thank you for singing this for us now . Have loved you forever .. please come to New Zealand when you can ♥️
I am 69 , thanks for the memories ! I love you Jackson Browne
After all these years, I remember this man, a poet together with his band. He was sharing his messages with a crowd of people in Bangor, Maine. In the throng, he somehow noticed my little one. Michelle was 3 years old, a tow head bouncing around in her cool jean overalls. Dancing. He asked me to bring her down & his eyes twinkled as she became a star and danced on his stage to the beautiful music he had created. Jackson Brown. What a wonderful, shining soul you have! A treasured memory from 1973 that I wanted to share. Thank-you!
"Let the music keep our spirits high." Thank you Jackson Browne for the music, fan for over 40 years.
My heart belongs to the Hudson River Clearwater Sloop 😘 and Dear Pete!
Although we are happy just to see and hear you all ....poets and artists I can’t forget the many years sailing on the majestic Hudson🙏🏼
Hello sister...
This song stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it, decades ago now. Still arresting, and oh so relevant.
@@ursulafahmy1833 I worked that boat once, long ago, with Pete on it.
Sublime. Me and my friends used to sing this song back in the day. How true it would end up being. A prophet.
The 36 people that don’t like this song, um. I better do what mom said and don’t say anything if I don’t have anything nice to say about those 36 people. Mannnnn I’m 50 years old and will be at the Aug concert if the good Lord is willing.
Jackson channels pure musical Divinity and liberates us all with his raw, unapologetic honesty. Damn grateful. Continuously inspired thanks to him.
Ah, Jackson, we've grown older together. How reassuring tonight to be once again reminded of simpler truths...much like looking down at a lyrical compass. I've listened over the years, yet this evening's smile reflects a new joy: I am here because my 39 year-old son sent me. From hundreds of miles away he writes, "The good spirit is still here...let our feathers never grow torn and tattered!" and I know that some things turn out just fine.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I am 63 so I think or at least hope that I understand you perfectly
@@dinacox1971 Thanks for the comment, Dina. I trust you do understand. Rereading this comment of mine today made me smile; I believe I needed to hear the message once again. I spoke this morning with the same son referred to earlier. When you give someone you love the appreciation of lyrics such as these, and he returns the favor so many years later...well now, first you sigh with a gentle relief, and then you turn to the opportunity to heed yourself, coming home after a great flight.
Forever young! Thanks God!
I love you Jackson Browne and I have since I saw you decades ago. I got to see you at Stowe Vermont when we had our summer fest on the hill. I've loved your prophetic music and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart because you are a beautiful real person. I keep you in prayer always 💞🇺🇸🙏😊
Tomorrow, March 27, 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Jackson's first album - Live At Jabberwocky, Syracuse Ny 27 Mar 1971. I was born 30 days later. Thank you for the years Jackson! Hoping we get 50 more.
❗❗❗
All hail the legend that is Jackson Browne...
As old as is new. In a lifetime of 60 or more years this is apparent. Jackson sees this.
Excellent cover! Close your eyes and you're listening to Jackson Browne.
The intelligence, wisdom and insights of a young man so beautifully distilled. Always loved this track (the whole album) and thanks to Jackson and Val for reprising it so movingly.
I’ve been a fan for 25 yrs, but growing up we didn’t have Late for the Sky. I only discovered it last year and it makes me cry every time. Bless you for your music and I hope my kids will find comfort in it one day as I have.

An Army buddy turned me on to Jackson when we were oversees. The most calming and amazing voice to keep the demon's at bay
Jackson Browne should get the Noble Prize for this one, for sure
I love seeing Val's face, who after playing this song probably hundreds of times, still gets lost in the beauty of the music. Thanks Jackson.
yes, his face says it all

@@nancyboyd6273 I wish I was that talented Nancy, but all I share is the name. And maybe I'm Thick as a brick 🤣
Dear Jackson Browne...your wordsmith, music gifts & talents have been with me as I've traveled my decades. You've consoled, comforted, caused me to contemplate, allowed me to take a turn around a dance floor or two with a wonderful soul, lifted my spirits & sustained my travels. You've permeated my sons lives as I shared you with them & now with my granddaughter. I owe you more respect, love & thanks than I'll ever be able to express or offer.
So respectfully my artistic friend, a million thanks & prayers for you to be as richly blessed as you've made all of us. Travel well.
And to the masterful Val McCallum...your playing is so soulful & touching. Thank you for doing all you have done sir. ✌&🤟 David B.
His voice sounds the same as it did the first time I heard him in the 70s. We are lucky to have him.
I lost my childhood farm of 48 yrs when I found my mom dead but this is one of few things that i still feel and care about. Had a cow on that farm named girl for 16 yrs told her goodbye and her eyes watered.
Masterpiece of words and music. Love how Val Macallum's playing fits perfectly with the voice and tone of the piece. Hold 'er in the road Mr. Browne.....
Mr. Browne, you are the man! Long time fan, still sound great. Thank you.
Since the Seventies..been a fan of Jackson Browne..legendary!
The struggle to protect Her grows greater every year.
It never ceases to amaze me. His backup guitarist, Val, just sits there waiting for his turn. And then out pours this soft and lovely arrangement with such effortless grace.
Two of my favorite people to ever pick up a musical instrument, in the same room together, playing one of my favorite songs. How on earth could it get any better than this?
I have been a fan for many years. For my 23rd birthday (1978) my friend bought me tickets to Mountain Aire in Angels Camp Ca. Jackson Browne, Jimmy Buffett and Warren Zevon. GREAT concert!

Clearly Jackson you are (the lifelong friend I've never met) who IS THEE only real true POET of our generation.... I can not think of another writer with such tremendous insight into the human condition ........ especially as relates to emotions........ at least for me.......and I suspect for thousands, if not millions more !!!
"When the Light that's lost within us reaches the Sky . . . " Many Blessings to All ~

Salute to You Jackson. I thought always as I listened attentively to your music. Each became better than before. ALWAYS THINKING YOU BEING OLDER THEN MY 25 years; When we were!! Now I turned 70 omg!! We have certainly aged well together Thru these many years!! Years passed by under Gods dark and silent gate as years and times have changed for us all!
Saddened; I so vividly felt in listening to your life story music of your heart broken with PERSONAL AN DEEP GRIEF; as deeply heartfelt loss of your main love; next to your music which helped you pull yourself thru such Shatter! Life went on as it is meant to. Thankfully for US YOUR MANY TRUE FANS ONWARD BOUND. I with much comfort listen to your wisdom in song; I am in my last leg with Lung Cancer eating at me for past 7 years. I ADMIRE YOUR TALENT WRITING YOUR MUSIC AND IN SONG BOW IN HONOR OF YOUR WHOLESOME LIFE!! Onward - Until. ✌️💁🏻♀️

Hey Patricia,
I am an old german girl.
"STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.."
My english is not good enough to tell you how much I feel about your words... but beleive me: I pray for You💞
My,what a line!!!
Thought you'd never ask. This is one of those rare ones. Ones that's catch the essence of both Jackson Browne and his age. An age I've lived through. An age that will never be equaled.
I like Jackson's voice better now than ever. It shows scars and wisdom.
Possibly Jackson's best. I still, after all these years, get chills when I hear it.
He summed it all up quite succinctly, and POETICALLY in this one!
In my opinion Val McCallum is one of those greatly expressive yet subtle, and almost elusive accompanists in the vein of players like Jesse Ed Davis. Great number guys thank you very much.
We live on a small Tennessee river. I’ve used this song as a metaphoric reminder of the times we find ourselves living through. It’s nearly 2022 and it becomes more real - the entire drama. Have grown so frustrated with language I picked up a new avocation as a drummer.
I entered high school in 1977 and discovered my brother's Jackson Browne albums. His songs have been with me since. Great artist.
Ahhh, Jackson, ur voice feels like a embrace of a old friend.
Sounds wonderful... ...♬
Thank you so much... ...🎼💙
I agree..truly blessed
Something so genuine and human about this rendition of this song. Truly a taste of something fine. Wonderful !
Saw him in Seattle around 1980...what a timeless writer/singer who touches your soul even after all of these years.
For all our children. May they always be
I really enjoyed what you share here 😊 so glad to hear that.
How are you doing today?
JB - thank you for being the poet you are - for 7:14 minutes - I find refuge and peace in your song - and am taken to a place where all is good with the world and mankind - thank you for that gift..
It’s the voice and the words, I never tire of them. Truly a great artist.
Devastatingly beautiful, just like the man.
I love you Jackson...always will!!! Thanks for so many years of the best poetry in song!!
A special song by a special person. Makes me proud to work in environmental protection thar we are appreciated. Thank you
Jackson Browne's music has only grown more poignant and a blessing living in this increasingly miserable world.
Amen

Jackson has aged like fine wine
Jackson Browne this is my most favorite song of all time! I started listening to you when my husband turned me on to the Late
For the Sky album when I was 17 in 1975! This is my go to song when I need to think about life! Stay Well!
This man has been a powerful voice in my life since I could pick up a guitar. He is magical and so brilliant. His music is still so relevant. Still sounds so great today as yesteryear. Stay strong and well for yourself and us (Clyde) Jackson. You are SO loved.
So many years of loving this musician/poet. I will always treasure seeing him live and meeting him forty years ago. He’s still number one, right up there with George Harrison. Thankful to be in this world with such a treasure. 🙏🏽💙🙏🏽
🤝
That beautiful soul, still pouring out. Damn. Thank you.
We will FIX it. ALL of us together. I am 5 strong! PARADISE Thy Kingdom come thy will be done on Earth as it is in HEAVEN!
I'm a 71 year old man who drank a many beer blasting you on My stereo in my 20s , knew a guy went to school with you ,said you carried your guitar all around with you 😁 Thank you for all the great music
👏👏👏
Timeless...seems even more relevant today. Thank you for this
I'm 70, this song is one of my all-time favorites. This version is PDG!
Listened and sang along while driving the old chevy late at night...Wore out a few of these cassettes in the old Marantz in dash stereo. God bless this man. I just hope life has brought him the same peace his music brought so many of us....
71 as well...
Rock on...
It’s hard for me to put into words how legendary this song is.
This was an odd experience. You Tube thought I should listen to this song and I have. I’ve just read Mr Browne’s Wiki entry and I see he’s a year older than me. I’ve spent much of my life listening to troubadour solo singer songwriters but somehow I’d never heard of this chap. I even love his politics from what I’ve just read so I’ll listen to more of his songs.
@@peterdelmonte9832 You're into singer-songwriters and you've NEVER even heard of JB??
PLEASE tell me that you've heard of Richard Thompson, Townes Van Zant, etc.??
I can listen to Jackson Browne all day. 💖
When JB sings, his voice transfixes my heart and I can't look away...
Thank you Jackson & Val...that was/is really special...Blessings to both of you...
My favorite song for nearly 50 years. What a message and actually like decades before!
Yes, the theme was/is staggeringly prophetic, decades before its time.
The songs, the voice, the shows, the style. For all my life. Thanks, Jackson Browne!
Maybe the song that makes me deeply cry and feel Love.
Thanks very much to taking it out to the world and holding it up thru these years. We are Time.
Gentle guitars 🙏🏽
JB Is one of the few whose lyric and musical art crosses the ages ... And especially for '' before the deluge'', the current global context lends itself to it. I grew up with it and I age with it ... Remain blessed guys!!!
My brother turned me on to JB's music in the 70's. Still value it today. There is a sadness that is somehow moving and comforting at the same time. A master poet and musician. Thank you for so many years of insight.
