  • John Eliot Gardiner introduces the first piece on the programme for our Easter Sunday broadcast, Bach's Christ lag in Todesbanden. The piece is Bach's earliest surviving chorale cantata: a bold and innovative piece of musical drama, based on Martin Luther’s fiery hymn of the same name.

What a lovely man! My passion for Church Music was my guilty secret for years. I grew up in a very poor area but got into a good school and there I learned to play the violin and learn how to sing. I sang for the practical component of my O level music exam. 🗣🎶🎻 I knew the Latin Mass from the age of 4 and sang High Mass every week. None of my friends did anything like this and I went to school in a different part of Edinburgh so nobody really knew. How grateful am I to music teachers and choirmasters for my inner life riches! You are one of my heroes and sheroes.🥳🎉😍🎶🎭

Die Musica sacra ist das größte Geschenk und Bach ist der Größte und schrieb alles zu Gottes Ehre und Dieser Dirigent spürt das.

    Hello Hector!! Good boy.
By the way, I’m going to throw a salutation to the ether and say I’m new to Baroque and discovered you here on CZcams conducting Handel’s Dixit Dominus. And now I’m a fan. Great to hear you speak and I’m very much looking forward to learning from you.

I watched this cantata conducted by JEG on the BBC Proms 2021 and it was the first time I had heard it. The 2nd movement is probably the most beautiful piece of music I have every heard. To think Bach composed this cantata at the age of 22. It really is hard to comprehend the depth of his genius, truely wonderous.

Thank you for helping us understand the ways in which Bach so carefully crafted his works---and, at the same, bringing us his music performed in ways he could never imagine possible. I am grateful for the work you've done and continue to do. Thank you!

Thank you, I appreciate this insight in elaborating the musical meaning. Here's the performance, I think, being introduced: czcams.com/video/XRNyhxnZOes/video.html
