- In this series I will take you through a step by step build of the Airfix 1/72 De Havilland Mosquito PRXVI kit.
Aimed at beginners, I hope to show lots of simple tips and tricks to boost the confidence of less experienced modellers, and to maybe add some polish for the more accomplished. Lots of detail, and yes, lots of talking! In part eight we focus on painting and masking of the major colours in the US scheme.

Hi Jen. Your videos have to be the best I've come across. Your calm, relaxed voice and manner are a treat to listen to and watch. I've learned a lot from you since discovering your videos. Your tip about the plastic is fantastic and another excellent example of how products designed for a different use can be used in modelling (just like therapeutic putty). I bought the same roll of plastic years ago at the retailer where I bought the paint and supplies to paint the interior of my house. It was sold as a drop-cloth for the walls when painting the ceilings; I could mask off and protect the walls in one step. I bought two rolls, each with a different amount of plastic that would fold out depending upon how far down the wall you wanted to cover. I don't remember it being expensive at the time. It was probably cheaper than if it had Tamiya's name on the packaging and possibly easier to find; my local hobby store doesn't carry it. Had I not seen you use it in this latest video, I would have never thought about using it for my modelling. Thank you.
Thanks Jen for a very interesting installment of the Mosquito build. Really learning a lot and please don't apologize for teaching us on your techniques. I find them really helpful. Already waiting for the next episode...!!
I'm not a beginner but I'm really enjoying these videos. It's always great to see how other modellers do things and there's always something you can learn.

Another excellent video, Jen. Any amount of useful stuff for beginners and, dare I say, not necessarily beginners but those of us always willing to pick up more tips from experienced modellers like yourself.
It is nice to hear someone speak out on the primer issue. Primer degrades subtle details. There is no need to prime. I have never had paint come away from the surface. When you work with Hasegawa and Tamiya, not to mention Eduard or Arma Hobby, you lose the fine molding details that you've paid you hard-earned money for! Why? Also I've noticed how often people incur orange peal on their, otherwise, gorgeous work! Crack on!
I am now at the stage of cleaning up the wing tip joints and i will be at the stage you have just started your latest video with. Lots of hints i have picked up from you so well happy with that.
Well done as always Jen. Seems to me that no matter how carefully one explains that your videos are about your methods you will always get complaints, whingeing, whining and ludicrous advisements abut how "you should have done ..." or "that's too hard for beginners". Horse Hockey as we say in the frozen north!
When I apprenticed as a graphic artist we were taught "top tips" (to borrow your phrase) and told to get on with it and learn how to get the job done. Practise, practise, practise.
There isn't really a substitute for practise, but picking up on these tips can save a lot of time experimenting and wandering off down blind alleys with things ....
I bought 3 pack of each size, in case I lose them. In fact, I lost them for a time, that is why I got so many. Jen, the hardest part of this model is the painting the invasion stripes (I think).
This is a terrific series, very detailed, full of hints and tips so very well done and thanks for producing it. Any modeller beginner or otherwise will appreciate it.

Therapeutic putty is used in the treatment of stroke patients who have suffered injuries to their hand function. It’s great fun and it really works- don’t ask how I know 😂

Always learning something new from your videos. Interested in the Therapy Putty. I was given something simular when I was doing hand physical therapy but it left a residue and I had to wash my hands after using. Very interesting.
Are you planning to continue this series? I'm seriously thinking of buying this kit and following your videos but I'd like an end haha. all the best to you, we need more ladies making models (subbed!)

Another load of great advice. I feel that you had to pick a model like this even if it maybe is not a beginner model per say otherwise there would not be enough detail to show what you are trying to convey which helps a lot for folks like myself that are trying to apply these ideas to all different kinds of models big and small as well as the model that I am building along with. Hopefully when the model is complete the ground crew is not to upset with those extra holes in the wing fuel tanks....
Jen, rather than setting your dividers to the edge of your rule, set them from 10mm then add 10mm to your desired distance. It's a lot easier and more acurate. Loving this series and even as a beginer I'm not finding it over complicated. Keep up the good work. Rgds from an ex Herc rigger.

I too am not quite a beginner but always looking for hints and tips. Hate ramming wheel wells with soggy tissue and mask fluid or blu tac as I always find it hard to remove, so bought some therapy putty you used here to try it. Have seen folks use it for camo masking but downside is it spreads, so you need to apply and spray quickly. I usually use blu tac worms and tape/mask fluid, but hard to recover the blu tac. Would blu tac worms with infill of this putty work I wondered? Tried a test with a circle of blu tac infilled and left overnight. No paint bleed and the two materials separated cleanly. 😀😀Result. Thanks Jen
I use paper or kitchen paper for masking large surfaces. Tamiya tape only for margins. And for masking details I use blue tack (patafix).

I think priming is largely a marketing tool to get us to buy more paint

Grow up! Opinions are like assholes, everyone has got one. Stop being so sensitive that you act like a petulant child in the comments. So you don't agree that it's a beginner series, good for you. I am a beginner, halfway through my first built. I love the series. Swings and roundabouts. So many ways to skin a cat in the modelling game. I personally would prefer to watch a beginner series were the OP is explaining why she does things a certain way and offers alternatives, than watch a supposedly "real" beginners video with brush painting with a kit supplied 3 pot/brush. I have always found the modelling world to be genuinely friendly and supportive, via shops, forums, CZcams communities. Would have been nice to see a fellow modeller (indeed modelling Channel), be supportive of a new modelling channel. Alas the opportunity was lost. Go sulk in the corner.
