Is It Worth Buying the Sony a7s in 2019? | Gear Review

- I've been thinking about selling my old Sony a7s in favor of the newer Sony a7mkIII. But upon finding out the a7s is selling used for around $500, I can't bring myself to sell it. But it got me thinking. Is it worth buying the Sony a7s, the original low light king... in 2019?

I bought my Sony a7s this month, June 2021, for US$ 644. It came with 3 batteries, a charger, a leather Sony cover, as well as the original box and manuals. This camera is in such good condition that it looks new. The original purchase receipt was in the box and the guy paid over US$ 2150 for everything. He upgraded to the Sony a7iii and I scored a bargain. I’m exploring Milky Way photography with it and want to do other night time photography as well.
How much
the intro alone made me like the video :D
I missed my opportunity to be a jingle writer lol. Thanks homie!!
Thansk for amazing video . I will subscribe :D
I have the original Sony a7S. just sold the a 7Sii and also TWO a7III ‘s And I carry around the a7S in my bag from most often. It’s a phenomenal little and light camera! I still love it,
Thanks for sharing your experience bud! Glad you enjoy the camera. Mine is definitely sticking around in my camera bag too.
@Michael Neumann . I followed your advice and perchased an A7s mark 1 for 999 euro’s on black friday 🙂
totally agree. This is the smallest full frame camera. With zeis 35m. f2.8 you can carry it in your pocket. Silent shooting and innocent look of it - you can take great pictures in difficult light conditions. My favorit camera.
finally a great video about ths is old beast.... well done !
Appreciate ya immensely. I have ton of love for my a7s
Thanks for the 2019 follow up on the a7s.
I love my a7s as well! It's my main camera I use in my videos.
Coming from the a7ii, as far as image quality goes, I actually don't miss the a7ii (only Phase detect is dearly missed). Like you said, we can't crop as much on the a7s, but that just makes me think more about my composition. Which is a good habit to have as a photographer.
This video is amazing dude. Looking at cameras and stabilizers and stumbled upon yours.
I recently inherited one and had its logic board and shutter mechanism changed to totally new ones so practically it is a new camera now. Paired with native Sony lenses such as FE 24-105 F4, and the FE 35 2.8 Zeiss, the micro-contrast and clarity is astounding. It might not be 42MP sharp, but if one is not making big prints, it won't matter much. This camera has a new lease of life with native high-quality Sony glass. Try it.
I'm still using my a7s professionally haha. Earned me over 80k of work last year(although a lot of that income was editing time), but yeah :)
Will be finally upgrading soon tho...
GET THAT BREAD! That's awesome. I really love mine, and it'll be hanging with me for a while. At least until they release the a7s mkIII. That might do it for me. Though the a7 mkIII is pretty handsome too. Lol
@secret me, or mrclarky? Hahah. I'm not sure where I'm going next. I like the a7mk3, I like the Fuji XT3. Even the BMPCC4K looks appealing. So I might have to do a fun series of rentals this summer and see what the move is. I'm so afraid that by the time I get a new camera, the a7s mk3 will come out like the month after.
@secret I'm in a similar boat to Sweet Lou, really hoping that a7siii comes out this year - and that's your best bet if you're looking for low light. If you can't wait, get the a7iii. I was tempted by bmpcc4k, but the 0.64 adapter costs almost as much as the camera itself which is ridiculus and I hate the form factor. Actually if canon made a decent mirrorless for video(unlike the sad Eos R), that would tempt me also as I have a lot of canon glass.
great review man! I managed to grab one for 400 a few days ago. I think that's insane considering I can hook it up to my Pix e5 recorder and get 4k ProRes out of it. The image is still fantastic! There is still so much life left in that camera.
A bit more than $500 I think... Adorama was selling that one for $399 as parts!
Oh shit good catch, sorry about that!!
@@SweetLouPhotography Yeah, a good condition one is going for around the 7-800 range from resellers. I just managed to get on for $650 from an individual locally and I am happy with that. I plan to use it mainly for nightscapes and Milky Way shots. It's also a good candidate to have a Full Spectrum modification done for astrophotography and IR photography. I chose this route over a new A7iii, This with my A6500 will suit me for a bit.
A lot of local NYC craigslist stuff still goes for around 500, but then again you might be getting a much more ratchet condition camera hahaha. Congrats on the buy- even at 650, I think that's a fantastic deal, and a fantastic camera. Happy shooting. If whatever you do with it, find me on instagram! I'd love to see your work :)
I love my Sony A7s, picked up back in 2020 for a steal at $200au and been using it for portrait/landscape/Astro, works well in all scenarios for me.
Such a well made video, detailed and funny. I’m looking for a camera for film making and was looking at the Sony A7S models. Earned a sub!
It’s August 2023. I just bought an A7s specifically for Milky Way time lapses. I enjoyed this video. Thanks.
Cheers, best of luck with the camera. It still slaps lol. Guess I should update the title of this vid haha
Yes, you made be buying a used A7S on Ebay. It wasn't cheap (in Europe) but I got one for 800 € with a shutter actuation count of 6,500 and 12 months dealer warranty. This is my first full-frame camera. I own already an A6000 but I am missing a microphone jack. The A7S will help me out here (and also with low-light conditions). Thank you for taking the time to produce this highly informative review :-)
instant sub in the first 19 seconds.
Thank you so much haha
same! real director! nice to watch all your stuff and Cure aswell!
In fact these older bodies without immage stabilization it will teach you proper mechanics on how to hold your camera to get a clean immage. Might be a good candidate for vintage Lenses even because in that way all the upgraded features mean absolutely Jack when it comes to vintage Lenses anyways and would therefore be a waist of time and money. So therefore in that situation getting a used or like new A7 for cheap makes sense.
Nobody :
Sweet Lou : Says *FUCK* on gear review less than 15 seconds since start of the video
Love it.
I thought this video was going to suck. It didn’t. Two thumbs up.
Thx for your video, one comment though: tonality does not equal sharpness. Tonality relates to transition of tones (which is important for b&w). The tonality (aka microcontrast) is great due to it having a high pixel pitch because of the few pixels. That is why i am getting it for stills 🙃 give me awesome microcontrast over extreme sharpness any day!
The intro earned my subscription ✊🏾
I got an a7s used for photos, and I love it. I definitely see issues with cropping, going from a 24mp a6000, but when I'm going out to shoot I find myself grabbing my a7s over the a6000 just because of how much freedom I have with ISO. I got it originally because I do astrophotography and I wanted a camera which is exceptional in low light, and this camera certainly doesn't disappoint. Silent shutter is also a godsend.
Would I like an a7rIV more? Probably. Can I afford it? Definitely not. For the price, the a7s just blows me away.
Very well put, I completely agree. Also I like your username lol
@@SweetLouPhotography I've had people tell me that they really like my username several times before, which I find very entertaining since I put about 2 minutes of thought into this username when making my first Minecraft account. I only chose it because I had pet chickens growing up, but since then it has been my username on everything - except Instagram, where the account name was taken by somebody who hasn't used it for 6 years but hasn't deleted the account.
I still use a A7S can you please link us to your cheap adapter for canon lenses?
Hey hey, I had trouble finding it new, but this is it: www.adorama.com/us%20%20%201182237.html
just stumbled upon your video and you're pretty entertaining, good stuff man keep up the good work
12mp never bother me. Unless heavy cropping or printing is involved, 12 mp is plenty.
1:35 Thanks for giving a shoutout to my favorite movie of all time! xD
just bought a A7s used for 400, I got convinced after watching your video :))
I'm not a vlogger or a pro photographer/videomaker, but I like to shoot good moments out of my days.
The only professional purpose I need is that one of recording videos in my recording studio, which is in a pretty dark room with weak lights.
I don't need 4K, I watched some videos in 1080p made with the A7s and they are stunning..
Hey , question. How are you liking the camera so far. How's the low light performance
The 4K out of the HDMI is really nice man. It really feels like you upgraded your camera. I am about to sell mine only because I just can’t stand rigging it in a cage, and for how I shoot videos I usually end up having to rig it. Amazing image quality still to this day though. Very underrated.
Appreciate the input!! I gotta check it out eventually haha
might upgrade from an a6000, despite the lower quality, this just has way more features and i believe it may help me become a better photographer
that intro, lmao love it.
hahah thanks
First time watching your vids, loved the introsong😂 very informal as well! Think im getting one, thanks man
Thanks so much!! Glad you found me
Just got blessed and found one in Charlotte for $475, hopped on bus from Atlanta just to get that deal 😁 on the bus now heading back to the A with my A7s. Now I have the gh4 and a7s I'm good to go for some years
Woooo congrats. That's a sweet deal!! Good luck with the camera.
First video I have seen your work. I subscribed lol
Thanks so much!! Appreciate ya
Love this humor, great content
Wonderful video. I have subscribed. Thanks! I have an a7s that I got 7 years ago, and I've been thinking about upgrading to a a7s iii. 4k and all the upgrades would be nice, but it's very expensive at $3.5k. I also love the Zeiss 55m 1.8 lens! What other lenses do you like for the Sony a7s? I use it only for video -- documentary work.
My Gh5 is my main camera, but I just picked up an A7S on ebay for $660 and I'm stoked!
Woooooo, have a blast bud. It's an awesome camera.
Hi! I have the a7s since 3 years ago and I am a little bit frustrated about the color grading. I feelI have not so much "space" in color and in highlights. I am thinking in buy a GH5 for most of my work and have the Sony for the lowlight situations. But do you recommend the gh5? I mean, the colors and the space for the postproduction is so different than the a7s? thank you!
I love the bloopers at the end are so me.
Great video! After watching your video I'm definitely considering buying one now. Im coming from a Canon T3i and wanting to move up to full frame. Trying to find a good full frame under $1000 has been challenging. Any recommendations under $1000? And would be the most bang for the buck. I mostly do photography but would like to have that option to do video.
Thanks so much. I think if you're more on the photography side of things, the 5Dmk2 might be a good choice. Not sure where those sell these days, but if you can get one below 1000, that would be a sweet deal. The 5D2 is a fantastic full frame camera. Not to mention you wouldn't have to buy new lenses since you're already on Canon.
A7ii
Excellent video. If you had to choose between a hybrid camera between the A7s and 6dmkii, which one would you recommend?
400 bucks to sell? After shipping, insurance, eBay fees and possible return shipping just keep it for a backup and night photography. I routinely use iso over 20k with little noise. I just use Topaz to increase the megapixel count in post.
Yeah, I don't know where you found one that was good for under $800.
I love this guy, funny and useful
Thank you thank you
Thank you very much for your review! Very informative and smart!)
One of the best cameras out there if you're planning to mod it to full spectrum which I did. Best bang for the buck!
How do you mod it to “full spectrum” ?
Love your editing!
Really appreciate that, thank you
People said, "It's 4K out makes it future proof..." and then they all ran off to TNBT. I held onto mine, and now, with the Ninja V and an external battery....it really has proven itself. I'm a big fan of shooting at 24fps so faster frame rates at 4K isn't really a huge deal breaker for me. I'm happy to invest in audio equipment instead...Great video!
Thanks much!! And thanks for writing about your experience!
I do own a A7 MK2 and im in the market for a decent video camera.
Whats the max frame rate with the MK1 A7s using an external recorder at 4k ?
Great video by the way... love the humor.
Would you still recommend this camera for video in 2020?
How about the AF for stills?
wow your review is awesome please keep doing videos
bro you make me laugh so hard! love your review!
Sorry I missed this one, thanks homie. Appreciate ya!!
Hi, I speak to the whole community, I am undecided between the purchase of this A7s and the A7ii ... I would use it both for photos and for video, but probably more for the videos having already a Reflex for the photos. Unfortunately the A7sii costs too much and these two are the only ones in my budget. Which one should I buy?
If you know you're gonna be doing more videos than photos, definitely grab the a7s. That's just my two cents but the a7s is super reliable for video, and it's been an essential in my kit for a long time. If you're going photos and really care about cropping and resolution, the a7mk2 might be the better choice. Hope that helps.
Nice video sir!
Thanks man really good working mans (or woman) review, you covered everything. Cheers
I know the feeling, I planned on selling my original a7 but when I saw what the went for it was almost insulting. Enjoy that camera way too much to give it away for that low of a price :) I think your pictures looked really really nice.
We are completely on the same page!! The a7s is definitely staying with me. Thank you so much about the photos :)
2021 - I just picked up an A7S for $300 USD in mint condition from a seller in Canada
the best review on youtube, tks.
Thank you very much!!
just got mine for 650, now i just have to find a lens. can’t wait to use it! hopefully this helps with my night photography
Excellent video very nice
Glad you dig it!!
a7s mark i is still my daily w voigtlander 35mm 1.4.... I also have numerous I also have Nikon Z6 and other Nikon Dslrs and Leica MP as well. I don't know why but I just love how compact this a7s is and how hefty it is as well. It does good amount of still and good amount of video. But when the sun goes down this is still King!
Hi thanx for the review !! i still love my a7s :D
I love mine too :) Thanks for watching!
What do you think is a better buy a second hand sony a7s with sony prime lens for 875 dollars or Nikon 750d with kit lens for 1190 dollars ? my main objective is Still photography but i also love Cinematography . Would be glad if you could reply .Thanku !
Hey hey. I can definitely recommend the a7s, it's a fantastic camera for video work. It can hang in the stills department, but it's not so friendly with heavy cropping. If that's something that matters to you. I cant speak on the D750, I've only used it once or twice. Don't want to give you bad info. I will say though, investing in glass is important too. So if you can get the a7s with a banging lens, or a Nikon, but just the body, I'd go with the body and lens every time.
@@SweetLouPhotography I think the form factor of A7s also plays a big role .is it good enough If I wanna do portrait and street photography? Generally I don't do much cropping tho .thank you
@@mohitojha7730 I talk about the form factor, ergonomics and ease of use at 12:27. I talk about the photography pro and cons at 10:19 (sample images are in that section)-- those are my thoughts on both of those questions. Hope that helps
@@SweetLouPhotography thanku
@@SweetLouPhotography thank you so much for your time !. I appreciate a lot 🙏
So, what kind of mirrorless do you recommend for street photography if not the a7s?
Still loving these. Lol I can't believe the diversity of camera channels.
Really appreciate you! :)
@@SweetLouPhotography U 2 bb :*
Nice video!
Thanks bud!!
I actually switched from my D3300 to an a7s last year. I've really enjoyed it. Especially the low light.
The low light is bananas on this camera, you just have to experience it haha. I've never used the D3300, what made you switch?
@@SweetLouPhotography It's Nikon's beginning model DSLR. It did everything I needed, but the ISO performance was awful. I wanted to go full frame, I realize that mirrorless will eventually take over, and I needed the ISO performance. That said, I'd still suggest the D3000 line for people just starting out.
Awesome!! Glad you enjoy the upgrade. Maybe I can get my hands on a 3000 series camera and do a silly challenge with it!
@@qwerty64ish I have one word of caution: don't go with the Sony 50mm. I'd Honestly go with Sigma if able to do it again.
@@qwerty64ish Awesome, good luck with the a7s! It's a dope camera
For video 5MP is perfectly fine when using APSC crop mode.
Great review! I've been using Sony A9 as my daily driver, but I still have my A7s which I find myself using still quite often. I've had it since the release and there is just something that draws me to using it. Mainly use it for nightskies and northern lights.
I'm with you!! It's old, yet still a go to. Ol' reliable.
Yo, no joke about the movie About Time though. That film had me S·O·B·B·I·N·G
ugh god yeah, definite tears
Ive been eyeballing this camera lately
If you can find a good used one, it won't disappoint. I really love this camera!
3:24 - wtf is that shot of a whale shark in an aquarium?!
Hahaa yeah, that was in Atlanta
@@SweetLouPhotography Love the video, the humour, the editing, the assumption that your audience aren't retards. But, dang: that makes me sad :(
@@turkeyphant Appreciate that you liked the vid. Sorry the aquarium stuff bums you out. If it's any consolation, I didn't put them in there
Enjoyed watching it so much bro
Thanks man!! Appreciate ya watching :)
I got mine with $420 for adapt vintage lens.
I recently picked one of these up, but feel like the pics lack sharpness. Obviously at 12MP theres not a ton of sharpening you can do. Any tips on settings to help with focus and sharpness? Mainly shooting on the 50mm 1.8 FE. Thanks!
Assuming you dont crop your pictures 12MP is more than good up to 24x36 inches. Thats big printout. Use higher ISO compared to the level you usually use. Most probably th loss of sharpness you experience due to tiny tiny camera vibrations. Higher iso allows higher shutter speed.
It's funny to had found this video today because last month I bought an used a7s to be my B camera and man, what a tiny great camera to film with!
Oh and BTW great video man! I do consider subscribing to your channel! :)
Woooo thanks for hanging out bud! I hope you enjoy the camera. It's been a real workhorse for me!
for a photography. Witch one is better. Btw A6300 or A7S?
personally i'd go with the a7s because i'm not a huge fan of the a6xxx series (I did an in depth review on the 6400 and found it practically unusable for video because of how bad the rolling shutter is)
I just picked up one for astro, $1000 AUD with the kit zoom. Am seriously considering selling it for the A7iii as a more all round versitile cam.
That's a nice deal! Good luck if you grab the a7mk3!!
For the average user of cameras just wanting a better camera that will take good pictures it's an age old question of "how much camera do you really need?"
For most people if you can sang one 500 bucks it will still beat the absolute CRAP out of other cameras on the market in that price range. Is it the best? No it's not...but still pretty darn good.
How bout compare it with A6500? Which one do u choose?
If I can get my hands on an a6500, I'll do a comparison!!
About Time was great.
looking for a good hybrid. i have the x100f, looking into nikon z6, eos r , and a7 line. theyre so expenive still even a7sii
hi there im currently using a fuji XT10 and do you think it's worth it to upgrade to Sony A7S? mainly for portraits/street photography image quality improvement and cinematic videos? please advise! currently on a budget
Honestly, if you're invested into Fuji lenses already, it might make sense to look into something like the XT30, if you're just looking to grab something that's a more modern camera. I did a review on the XT30, and I quite liked it. The main reason I say that is if you jump to Sony you'd need the lenses which are expensive af. The good Sony Zeiss lenses will easily cost more than an a7s body. Hope that helps!!
Sweet Lou Photography would you recommend the A7S or the A7R i'm looking to do a little of portraits and cinematic videos? please help!
How does it hold up for Stills though verse the original A7
I am a beginner videomaker, should I invest in an expensive camera like the a7s or should I get better lenses for my 650D?
Please help me!!!
Better glass will probably last you much longer than a new body- not to mention if you eventually switch to Sony, you could always adapt the Canon lenses over. (Sorry for the delay, this ended up in spam for some reason)
A7s as good for sport photography ? Or Sony a6300 as better?
6300 !
May I choose A7s for still photography, mainly portraits and street ?
I think it can work, it's also a lot about who is operating the camera. I'd also say the lens matters a ton, especially for portrait work.
i wane buy it
it's a beast of a camera!
To answer the question in 2020, YES. I still use this camera for wedding sills, hard to tell the difference from my a7 stills.
if I can get a7 mark 1 and a7s for the same price which one should I pick?
I do more photoshooting
which take sharper image?
I love my a7s but you won't be disappointed with the a7. It's just a tool, if you don't know how to use it it won't matter which camera you get. I still actively use the a6000 just check out my Flickr
www.flickr.com/photos/johnhartphoto/
@@misterpringles2384 There's a saying in racing "How Fast Do You Want To Spend". If your budget doesn't allow for the latest and greatest, get what you want that you can afford. When I got my a7 and a7s I didn't care about bad menus, bad battery life, over heating or the ergonomics, all can be over come. I wanted to use the Canon FD and EF lenses I all ready have and moving forward, expanding to great Sony Zeiss, Sony GM and Sony G lenses in the future. I enjoy using equipment other people think inferior for getting great results. Get what YOU want not what other people tell you to get. Judging by John Hart's images you just need to know how to use it.
So could you use the camera for video recording with an APS-C lens? I want to get one as a companion to my a6300, and only ever use it for low light shots, cause you can't tell it's not 4K anyways when it's low light, and that is 1080p upscaled, cause 4K in low light will be the same sharpness as a potato on literally any camera.
If you pop an aps-c lens onto the a7s, I believe you will see a vignette around the edges. I popped my Sigma 16mm f1.4 onto my a7s, and I had a pretty intense vignette on the edges. The a7s does have that aps-c crop mode though. The drawback though is that you will be using a smaller portion of the sensor, which is already a semi-low megapixel sensor. Food for thought, hope that helps.
czcams.com/video/P92GMMLjLJs/video.html - Here you have a movie about the SONY 16mm F2.8 lens adapted to full frame becomes a cheap Fish-Eye. The trick is to unscrew this plastic lens electronics cover in the mount. The lens is still slightly vignetting but it is much better. Sorry, I don't know if you understand something from this video (I don't speak English - I'm from Poland). Greetings!
So I want a cheap camera to shoot night photography like concerts, nightclubs etc...should I go with 1st Gen Sony A7, A7r or A7s??
@arunashamal . A7s. Most sensitive and silent shooting! (Forget the A7R mark 1)
I found a7 and a7s for 600£ both almost new
which one is better deal ?
I do more photoshooting
sharpness is important for me
I think it also depends on how much you want to crop. The a7 has 24 MP (I believe, don't quote me on that) so it's more than double the MP in the a7s. So if you like aggressive crops, that one might work better for you. For me personally, I'd stick with the a7s because of the low light and the video stuff. But the a7 is certainly no slouch either!!
I want to buy it! :D
But it's so hard to get it in reasonable price range(
Ahh a7s vs 6d (mk1) the struggle. Decisions decisions
Which lens would you recommend for the a7s ?!
Vintage lenses! 😉
We love you
thank you boss
Thank you for watching homie
Where’d you find one for 500 bucks ?
About to buy it in 2021 :)
What is that red circle think hanging off the side of the camera?
Thing*
@@thorbrevik3863 that's for the peak design camera strap. You kinda just click the strap into the red bits rather than threading it through every time. I use them on the a7s because I put it on the gimbal regularly, and it's was annoying to thread the strap every time lol
whats the song called in that first montage?????
You're referring to the shots from Cure? The song in that montage is called Strange Stuff, it's from the CZcams royalty free library
