As an old timer who grew up in Newark, I remember the RKO Proctors very well. Indeed, it was a beautiful motion picture palace, pretty impressive well into the 60s. I remember BEN HUR played there. The picture was so popular that, on the day I went to see it, the main auditorium was sold out, so I had to take the elevator up to the penthouse theater where they were also screening it. That was the only time in my life I was ever up there. Some of those open spaces on the upper level appear to be abandoned offices and work spaces. The photo you show of the RKO at the end might have been taken in 1943 because that was the release year of the Bob Hope - Dorothy Lamour picture displayed on the marquee. And you are right, that area of Market Street between Halsey and Washington, was part of Newark's bustling downtown. The Bamberger's Department store, from which that vintage photo was taken, was right across the street. Another department store, Orbach's, was located diagonally across Market, just one block to the east. Men's stores, haberdashery's, shoe stores, restaurants, Woolworth's and furnitire stores were all within easy walking distance. It was nothing to shop, catch a movie, have a meal afterwards and then catch the bus home. As Bob Hope would say, "thanks for the memories."

This is so dope no live to see old things and old places frozen in time. I can’t believe it was left just like that. It should’ve been preserved

there used to be an abandoned school with a huge theater in it up off of court street on the hill but I think they knocked it down. I stumbled across it one day and couldn't believe it was being left to just rot. it was gprgeous

@@RangerRickTV , the Paramount Newark is about a quarter mile on Market Street to the east of where you were at the RKO. It still stands, but is in even greater disrepair than the Proctors. There are views of the Paramount, both in its glorious past and in its current state, on the internet.
