    I feel that Summoning (and to a lesser degree Dissection) has such a unique style that some bands try to replicate but can never really manage to do so
    Great video though, I didn’t know a lot of the background behind Summoning

    • @NeroAngelo616
      @NeroAngelo616 Před 3 lety

      Both of those have been replicated and used for inspiration in reference. The Summoning worshippers you see here and the Swedish melo Black
      scene that Dissection were mainly rooted in NWOBHM.

    • @MyNameAkhim
      @MyNameAkhim Před 3 lety +5

      @@NeroAngelo616 bands have certainly tried but very few I can think of have come close. Especially compared to the tons of bands who have been able to successfully copy that old school second wave black metal style. I can’t think of any bands that have made dungeon synth/darkwave black metal that has been done as well as Summoning.
      In terms of Dissection, a few of their contemporaries are close (like Dawn and Sacramentum) and the best Dissection worship band I’ve personally heard is Thulcandra

    • @NeroAngelo616
      @NeroAngelo616 Před 3 lety +1

      @@MyNameAkhim you initially didn't mean about quality but copying a formula to which both artists inadvertently generated worshippers such as the trash that came from both ie above for Summoning and Thulcandra. Dawn and Sacramentum developed something more akin to black metal's dynamic and substance after Dissections melodic lead by heavy black style. Summoning for what prompted them was their method of technique that was only really emphasized by musicians afaik that used techniques akin to Summoning solely per se such as the synths, drum machines (could be wrong), keyboards akin to that found in-game soundtracks for context.
      [EDIT] Sorry, I mean to add that Godkiller was how you listen to Summoning, be inspired, and then do something exclusive similar to them.

    ~Summoning do not consider themselves a band but label themselves "composers".
    ~Summoning occasionally utilizes guests. Most notable, Protector's girlfriend who lends a voice on 3 different albums. 1 track she is speaking in Elvish.
    ~Summoning was the first to use a song with the language of the orc.
    ~Summoning almost split up during the making of "With Doom We Come". (Nice play on words as the title track is about Sauron coming to Middle Earth)
    ~Old Mornings Dawn was the first song that both members singing together. (I think...)

    @NeroAngelo616 Před 3 lety +2

    Summoning is the one where everyone has a story to tell about them, going either way, or (like me) both.
    They were one of the earliest black metal bands I tried that I understood as having a grandiose but be very overbearing to grasp to the point of interaction, overall enjoyment. Of course, this gradual revision is a natural development in our nature throughout our times. It was such a primitive experience that at the time I didn't even know doom metal, darkwave/ dungeon synth, neoclassical and even industrial to the most extent. These are all components that I associate Summoning with. Industrial elements from Minas until Nightshade that perhaps like them conceptually, while any artist aspiring to be original, had a craft reminiscent most to that of video games. This era of Summoning when 1995 to me was the turning point for black metal emerging into its first true experimentation (avantgarde, industrial, gothic, atmospheric, and folk later turned proto psych). At the time this was Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound golden era, many of them and as a result lead to the imo best Summoning inspired album that is not direct worship but the industrial-medieval underrated blend that is Godkiller's The End Of The World.
    Over time because of experiencing more generally slower atmospheric music genres do I try them again starting with Lost Tales and man do I wish I had a whole album with them going that direction. My longest difficulty was the black and white acceptance of how songs would click and others would bore. I appreciate how Stronghold, Minas, and Oath varied in their sound (before learning about dungeon synth being a core base) but could and sadly still never get convinced by how Let Your Mortal Heroes shines on the same track formula throughout. I apologise upfront if this is gonna be hypocritical but a lot of criticism I see of them being either too repetitive or boring on beat and (for me occasionally on synth) comes from the same people who will easily consume a bunch of boring-ass doom/black so it's a fair balance.
    They aren't as spoonfed as obvious other talents and at times can be extremely hard to reach that reward since they offer distinctive individual details that separated them from other atmospheric bm acts for a long time, but it's not -all- great. One of which is how the majority of the pace is at walking speed is interestingly distinctive in black metal.
    Caradhras and The Wandering Fire are as perfect for hikes as you can get. They should next try should go the funeral doom route as it seems also the usage of sounds they generate come from the similar game console soundtrack effects at whatever is available.
    Oath is likely my favourite along with Minas in having what seems to be the lesser guitar derived, so after years of listening to it return more in Old Mornings Dawn next after is a refreshment and easily Summonings most accessible album. Summonings scope and scale is what led me to initially be repelled now turned respect for pushing my acceptance for understanding music better as you see here my first sentence comes full circle.

Maybe because of the fact, that he is some (alleged) rich boy from Monte Carlo or that he got lumped in with the Symphonic Black Metal of that era, which was not really what Godkiller was all about.

Protector gave a long ass statement about it where he clearly said that he’s definitely against Nazis and other dumb people trying to drag them into it and labeling them as NSBM (I really wonder what the hell people are connecting it to). But I remember Silenius being rather silent about it in an interview. He did mention tho that he doesn’t really share Protectors opinion but didn’t go into much detail after all. Anyway, nice video. Glad I’m not the only one. God knows I’ve tried, but there’s just too much piano and synth for my liking.

      Yeah they're definitely a long term style albeit some songs for me like Over Old Hills and Caradhras clicked instantly.

    Its not pronounced "dyverbandenkyndarevas". You pronounce it like a single word in one long wurst. Die verbannten Kinder Evas means the banished/exiled children of eve.

    Is it really this hard to figure out the pronunciation of "Die verbannten Kinder Evas" ?
    he man, we as germans always have to learn to handle all these cryptic and strange deathmetal-bands in english, too ;-)
    it means "The banished children of Eve". Most funny is always the German article "die" (meaning "the", simple pronunced like the english "Dee") spoken like the english "die", which means "sterben" in german, and every german metalhead knows 🙂
    sorry for that 🙂

    ‘Die’ in German should be read as ‘Dee’. Meaning ‘The’.

    Different things for different folks, but frankly Summoning sounds like JRPG music with tremolo guitar and rather bland BM vocals to me.
    I've never understood why people like the band so much.
