Audi R8 V10 Acceleration Review | Does the VF Tune Make It Faster Than the R8 V10 Plus?

- The original Audi R8 was a champion for affordable supercars. But in 2017, they redesigned the car and did away with the V8 option, leaving only the V10 and V10 Plus. In this episode, I’ll be testing the 60-130 acceleration for a bone stock standard V10, a VF tuned V10, and comparing it to what I think a V10 Plus model would run. We also compare it to my old Lamborghini Gallardo.

Thanks. I remember I shot a video a long time ago for Heffner who built one of the first TT kits for the original V8 R8. It made something like 630HP and that was considered amazing. Now it's through the roof. I've actually been seeing a lot of supercharger kits for the Huracan lately. I wonder how they stack up since they practically share the same engine.

Just bought the 2015 V10 (3 weeks ago). She is going in for her tune today. Can't wait to see how she reacts. I hear there is a stage 2 which would involve replacing the stock exhaust. Does this or any tune effect long term use?

Thank you. And I agree, for a car like this, I rather save $25K (tune cost $2K I believe) for being a tenth or two slower in a straight line. The Plus model also has fixed rate suspension which would destroy you for daily/touring drives. The standard is more comfortable as a street car.
This is really making me want to fire up the old 10hz gps receiver to see what my Z06 will do in these metrics. I have never truly tested it. Good stuff. We love data.
Do it! I'm curious what a H/C C6Z could put down. Either way, I'll try to make my way out there in May, (hopefully). I'm still debating Slipstream @ Poconos for 4/20. Season opener always seems to be the priciest though.
The v10 will never have the same 60-130 as the plus unless it has ceramics (much less rotational mass) and a high flow exhaust (freer flowing on the plus. And it weighs 100lb more and has taller gears. Lots more differences than we may think.

Man if you did a comparison between NSX and R8 V10 non-plus, that would be the matchup I'm curious about the most.
I personally don't think the Plus trim is worth it because it almost sounds like you get less for more. Plus gets fixed suspension vs dynamic ride, 6 piston calipers vs 8 pistons, etc
The lack of power in the non plus model can be mitigated with a tune.

I'm surprised you left out the times of the Tuned TTRS on the second chart. Seems like I'd give it's bigger brother a run for it's money.
Definitely would. But in my M2 episode, I mentioned that I would start separating the modded cars from the stock cars so that people can see fair comparisons. I still have all the data for the modded cars on another list though. If you remember, the stage 2 TTRS ran 40-100 in 4.82. I don't have the data in front of me but I think the TTRS would start to lose ground around 115MPH. I wish I was able to knock a 60-130 time for that TTRS though. It would've been really close.

It was a flash tune so I think they may have mailed it. I could be mistaken though. Not my car and the owner did the flash from stock to VF tune while we were at the track.

That NA feel is where it's at for driver feel and sound. Can't wait to get one. It's also fast at the track. The 10 year old R8 V8 is still faster then a Model 3 Performance at Laguna Seca
Yeah the R8/Gallardo/Huracan platform handles really well on a track. Especially with the AWD. I want to get some lap times with the M3P though. People keep saying how it'll lap all these cars on the track but seeing is believing for me.
@@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy the M3P can actually lap tracks without going into limp mode. It still needs cool down time after 2.or 3 hard laps though. What would be really cool to see would be the R8 V10 first gen vs the Mustang GT350. Manual battle and your take on driver enjoyment

Tune made a big difference in the car. Glad you had fun with it. What a cool car it really is. It is quick and has pretty good handling. I find it funny how the TTRS and the R8 sound so similar too.
Anyways, I’m alright. Got a busted lip and a black eye that I can’t see out of, but at least I didn’t get knocked out. For a skinny kid like me, I held my own against a huge dude like him for a while. I’ll be okay soon. Just how life works man. Usually treats you shitty, sometimes treats you well. I'm surprised how much of a difference a tune made on an N/A engine. You'd expect it from a turbocharged car but not from a high revving V10 that's practically maxed out. Well I guess they basically just unlocked the + model's power with the tune, but still.
Excited to see that track day video from you. That circuit doesn't look crazy technical and but looks pretty high speed. Should be a good time regardless. Season is open here so I"ll finally be getting some track time/videos up as well!

I was surprised of the gain too. The V10 motor is very powerful and has so much potential. It’s like how the V8 can make so much power.
Yeah the track only has 8 turns, so I’ll probably be last in the lineup as my car is modified for superior handling and acceleration. It’s top speed without limiter is just short of 130, and there’s lots of straights. There will be ZL1 1LEs there, I’ll pretty much have no chance but, I’ll be having fun at least.

Man, that sucks. That's why I avoid car meets nowadays. Some of them just get too rowdy. I remember back in the day, shit got real Fast and Furious around here with the meets and people did some crazy stuff in their cars when they got mad. There was this time, this turbo RX7 kept trying to brake check me. Scary stuff.

There are a few, but the first ones that come to my mind are the Acura NSX, BMW i8 (competes only in price), AMG GTS, Aston Martin Vantage, 911 Turbo, and if you want to throw Americans into the mix, you can compare its performance to the Z06/ZR1 and Viper.

I'm going to be honest, even though I love the lambo I'd still get the r8. I was in Germany when the first built R8 was presented to the world and I said to myself that I must have it one day. For me the 1st gen is timeless and I'm crazy in love with It, even though the Gallardo is the better car.
@@RK1FX I had it for a little over two years, tracked it a few times as well as did a lot of straight line racing. I even cracked a wheel during a race. Bu never had any issues with the frame to my knowledge. The first gen R8 is pretty timeless. A beautiful design that was ahead of its time.

So after driving the Audi R8 do you regret not buying it? Or do you feel you made the right choice by buying the Lambo?
Well when I was buying the Lambo back then, it was the first generation R8 which was lackluster in the performance department in comparison. I think back then, the Lambo is still the winning choice, but today, they closed the gap between the Huracan and the R8 V10 so it would be a tough choice. I feel like the R8 V10 is classier and now has the performance to back it all up.

Speaking of the RS5, I am taking a trip to Spain and I was supposed to get an RS4 Avant which shares the same powertrain as the RS5 (450HP 2.9T) but they did not have it so I am stuck with an RS6 Avant (spoiler alert). Still an awesome car though.

The plus version has a stronger built gearbox for supercharge aplication.
Interesting, I never knew that 🤔🤔 I always thought it was just different ratios. Could explain why the transmission in the standard model felt so ... "soft".
@@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy yes it can handle less power. We have some crazy Audi Lambo tuners here in my country and I've talked to the owner of one of the local shops. He said that if you decide to tune the Audi, buy the plus. The gearbox is different, stronger clutch and other components.

@@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy Poland. Check out videos on CZcams of a tuner called sportmile. Type in sportmile rs6 or m6.. They made a 1k hp stock motor rs7 with hybrid turbos, the car runs solid for many many miles.

Thanks, I often get comments saying that my times are generally more conservative and I'll quickly explain why I think that. For one, they aren't hero runs done to achieve the fastest possible times. Secondly, I don't get a lot of time with each car so I get a total of 2-5 runs every car I test. I try to give them the best possible scenario but I won't be as fast as someone who owns the car or is gunning for record times. But what I try to do is provide consistent testing conditions. Last but most importantly they are all DA corrected to sea level and slope verified to < 0.5% of a grade. You'd be surprised how much each variable has an effect. But also, this car is not a RWS, just straight up base AWD.

Yeah, I've gotten so accustomed to all these modern forced induction cars and their super torque-y low end punch that I forgot what it was like to have to rev to the moon to make power. But they've come a long way, I think the old R8 V10's ran 10 second 60-130 times which is not slow, but disappointing for the money you pay.
Doesn't need any torque, it's dual clutch.

Best car for the money and performance is the C7 Corvette ZO6.. Audi nice car and many beautiful cars out there, but ZO6 just does it all and the price says it all
C7Z is probably one of the best bang for the buck performance cars thus far.
