- First in a series of (hopefully!) easy to follow tutorials on playing backgammon, designed for the absolute beginning player. Please feel free to comment, and ask any questions, and I'll do my best to reply. Thanks for watching :-)

For those who have said they needed more time, I'd recommend they replay the lessons as many times as needed so they get the repetition needed to comprehend what Ensor is trying to say. Each person is unique in how many times they need to see and/or hear something before they get it. So, I'd recommend replaying lessons for which each person needs to hear more than one time. As there is no charge for his lessons, it's a FANTASTIC value for a public service.
You are a fine teacher! 👍🏻 For those who say it's too slow, this is perfect for beginners. If somebody wants a more condensed overview, there are several out there, it may be useful to watch those and then come here for the details.
I played often, many many years ago, forgot all I know, and I thought looking at a few of the "condensed versions" would jog my memory, but no luck. This video was perfect to solidify the rules and moves. I really like how you addressed salient topics in separate videos.
I'm always impressed by somebody who can teach like this, as you said at the beginning, no script, but everything was perfectly fluid and if it were me, it would be filled with um's and uh's.
Thank you, very much! Don't worry, I had my "ums and uhs" moments, as my backgammon software recommendations video ably confirms! I cringe a little every time I hear it now.
My 6yr old and I really appreciated your thoughtful delivery. We understand now how to play! Game time!
Since we watched your videos on how to play backgammon, my husband and I bought a set from Amazon (with felt board and folding for travelling). We are now hooked and have played over a hundred games as the weather has been cold and rainy. So wanted to say a big thank you for your easy, clear and helpful videos.
Sir. This is f'n excellent!!! I just bought a board today as I am determined to learn how to play!! I will be watching your videos! You have a very comfortable way of speaking. I'm looking forward to the other videos!
This should retitled "Samwell Tarly Explains Backgammon"
Thank you! I am a complete beginner learning how to play during the COVID pandemic and this was so helpful! I really appreciated the slower pace.
I'm on Part 4 and noticed that this video series is the best, most easy to understand tutorial on how to play, what I thought was a confusing game. Thanks for putting these up. Always wanted to learn this game after seeing the casino scene in Octopussy. I'm just waiting for the part where I can use player's privilege, lol.
As a beginner I watched your tutorial avidly, then moved on to computer app, after playing that for a while for a very long time, now I'm winning on a regular basis in a real life one 2 one situation.. thank you Ensor :)
I've never played Backgammon before so thought I'd give it a go. I play games for my own amusement on an iPad with the computer as my opponent . I loaded he game but there was no instruction as with most games so I was pressing anything, thinking I would pick It up as I went along. No hope ! Didn't have a clue !! So I watched all 11 parts of you videos and hey presto I won the 1st two games ! I thought the instruction was very clear and put in a way that I understood and remembered it. Thank you very much. 😀
I have the same daft game..
No instructions but now..
Fun, isn't it?
However, I do think, at the endgame, you have to get the exact number, to get home..
It's not quite Ludo, is it?
I very much appreciate what your are doing here. Thank you for your kindness!
Excellent instructional series! My spouse and I learned the game from Ensor42, and our first game together was well-informed. We were able to discuss strategy and the prudence of prospective moves. We enjoyed a delightful game and anticipate more fun!
I wanted to thank you...I watched all 16 videos last night and then downloaded an app on my phone. first match had my butt handed to me, second match I copped a feel back. lol
Thank you for this Backgammon for beginners series! I have been wanting to learn how to play for a long time and reading the instructions that come with the set just doesn't work for me. So, your videos are just want I needed. My recent visit to Istanbul where tavla (backgammon) is played everywhere made me determined to finally learn how to play!
Just came back here to thank this series of videos.
I was a complete beginner. The videos were very clear and helpful. Now I understand the basics and more importatntly I can enjoy the game.
Thank you!
This is exactly the sort of video beginner's guide I was looking for. I intend on playing with my dad again after almost 30 years.
Thank you. This is my first instruction on backgammon. I think I made an excellent choice. I've learned something already. I will follow your videos closely. This is just what I was looking for.
Great tutorial. I watched these one morning over the holiday break when I wanted to learn how to play. After the morning, I felt I clearly understand the rules, basic strategy and entertainment value of backgammon. Excellent work, Ensor42!
You are an amazing tutor! I have tried countless attempts to learn backgammon. I had given up. Every time I have a question regarding the game you seem to read my brain and answer it moments latter. Thank you for taking the time to make this series.
Thank you for posting these videos. I've played for years, this is the best I've seen, very good job.
Thank you, very much :)
Thank you for your response. Don't think twice about me. you've done a great job , should be proud, backgammon is a wonderful game. Thank you sir.
Really good first tutorial! I am dyslexia and this is the first tutorial which actually makes sense! |thanks.
Excellent!! I last played Backgammon in 1996, I recall it was a good game. I've had a set since Christmas 1996 and i havn't had a clue how to play it. These are really good videos to learn the game and also how to play it. Well worth a watch.
Thanks very much for posting this series of videos. I have wanted to play backgammon for a while now & your videos were so easy to follow and understand. I have played several games online now & am getting more confident playing each time. Again, many thanks.
THANK YOU! We tried several instructional videos and finally found you. This is what we needed. You are an excellent teacher!
I cant than you enough for this video series. Every time I try reading the rules from various books, and every damn time I get lost.
You certainly are the best on CZcams for Backgammon tutorials. Theirs some really bad stuff on YT I mean some don’t even know which direction to move the checkers.
I loved this video because I think it explains everything that a beginner needs to know about the game. Thanks!!!
Brilliant! Every backgammon set should come with a link to this channel. My wife and I just got a set and after gazing at the incomprehensible rules sheet, turned to youtube. Your beginners lessons had us playing competently within half an hour. You took a confusing game and made it crystal clear. Many thanks.
Thank you ... after 30 years not playing ... your tutorial helped me remember and am ready to take it up again 👍🤗
I watched all the videos and they were superb. Ever since I was a kid my parents always bought me games compendiums every christmas and i taught myself Chess,Draughts,Poker Dice,Cards etc but I always wanted to learn Backgammon but i never understood it (its on my bucket list) thats how badly i wanted to learn it and after watching these vids I now understand it and its now time to buy a decent backgammon board. My first games compendium was in 1974 so it just goes to show how long ive wanted to learn this game and after watching these brilliant vids I can honestly say thank you so much to Ensor42 for actually making it sound simple. If I was a millionaire i would leave you something in my will, but im not so thanks anyway lol.
Thanks :) If ever you do reach millionaire status, or attain the giddy heights of World champion or suchlike, do try to remember the little people who helped make it all possible ;)
Love the entire Series, i see why people would criticize about having to watch 16 videos.
Thinking this will be a series I'll follow. Thanks for the effort!
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm glad you're enjoying them :)
by far the best instruction on the game that I've seen. thank you
Great tutorial, but watch at 1.5x or 2x speed -- I am a complete beginner in this game and I found this series very helpful. Thanks!
Thank goodness for your tutorials because I was wanting to know how to play the game but watching it been played else where I just could not for the life of me figure out any of it at all!! And you have helped me more in this short video than searching online on how to play the game. I will definitely be watching more of your tutorials to help me understand how to play. THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!!!!!!!😀
I found this video extremely helpful as it helps me immensely to have things broken down into small bits. I find his voice very reassuring and not patronising - I will be watching more...
Thank you :) A slow paced tutorial was always the objective, and I admit that it has received some criticism for being TOO slow, but I stand by the decision to make it as beginner friendly as possible, and your kind comment is among those that suggests that it did hit the mark for most of the intended audience.
Much appreciated.
Perfectly explained, thank you! My husband and I played 6 games today after watching 1 - 10
I was giving a backgammon set a while back, read the instructions, scratched my head and put it at the bottom of my cupboard never to be seen again - That was of course untill I came accross your excellent tution - Thanks
Thank you very much! I have had such trouble finding a good strategic game to play with my father but, sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one! I bought a game for him this Christmas and we learned it and played it the very same evening. It was very easy to learn thanks to you!
I have wanted to learn for years, this is good help. With this and a friend I should be in with a fighting chance of learning.
Just bought a backgammon board for the first time so this has been very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to upload it.
Excellent! Just what I needed after not playing for many many years .It does what it says ,for complete beginners!! Thank you
Okay, I am here to learn; I truly enjoyed listening even the rambling. Learn and listen, you do not continually repeat yourself, you use good verbal and visual introductions like the clock and counter-clock. This is exciting, I am learning. Thank you!
Thanks for this well explained guide series. I've never played Backgammon myself before and now I have a pretty good idea on how to approach this game in a smart manner.
This is.a truly excellent tutorial series. It really helped me understand the game in a very short period of time. Thank you !
Thank you so much for making a great video. This is the first vid that didnt speed talk thru and jump to gameplay. I understand what a point is and that the colors dont correspond to the checker pieces. My sons bought me a combo chess checkers backgammon for mother's day as they know I love board games. I hope to teach them how to play after I learn first.
Thank you for these series! I was always interested in playing backgammon but had absolutely no clue how to play.
We have a new set and didn't know how to get started. This tutorial is excellent! Thanks so much for taking the time to give us this info.
For taking the time to reply in this way, you have my sincere respect and thanks.
Thank you Ensor42, I have watched your entire series for complete beginners. I really feel that I have a handle for the game and am enjoying playing it. I very much appreciate your detail and careful, systematic explanation. Very thorough, thanks! I'll be watching the intermediate series next.
Thank you, very much. It's always nice to hear when people feel that they have been able to benefit from the beginner-friendly approach that the series was aiming for.
Thank you for this I have watched all the videos now and have actually given my opponent a run for their money. They must of wondered how I'm suddenly playing "intelligently".
thank you Ensor42, i had no idea how to play, after watching yr lessons, i knew how..very well done..easy to understand, i got it...now i just need to practice..thanks again so much
Thank you now I know the basics of backgammon
I have watched all 16 of your videos, they are simple, easy to understand and aimed perfectly at complete beginners. Thank you very much. I have ordered a game and look forward to start playing!
The best tutorials for backgammon on CZcams. Thank you for taking the time to upload this series. I will just play without the doubling cube for now. Far to complicated to understand right now.
love it. found this series by Ensor42 in 2011 and still enjoy watching!
I love it when auto-focus is on and people start waving their hands around.
This is a wonderful series of really well explained lessons. I was playing almost immediately! Thank you so much for your excellent teaching and teaching skills. Absolutely fantastic. I had been wanting to learn to play for years!! Now I can and love it!!
thank you I'm from Biloxi Mississippi and I never knew how, but happy with your video...thanks
Breath-taking eloquence, such a joy to behold.
Have watched all the series and have found them a brilliant aid for learning. Well done sir.
Thank you kindly, glad they were useful for you.
WOW! I just had my first little "ah ha' moment watching this tutorial THANK YOU!
Seriously the best backgammon tutorial I’ve seen (watched the full playlist). I’ve watched a lot of other tutorials online and they were definitely too complicated and missing crucial beginners info. Thanks for taking the time to make these :)
you move around the board and it doesn't matter if red tiles go on black points. That took 6 minutes to explain. Very succint
Thank you,you just went straight ahead and explained the basics and it really helped me understand backgammon
I learned the game, playing with friends, on the beach in Long Beach New York, way back in 1972.... And it has been my favorite game ever since. I have it on every one of my devices... I have a few separate electronic versions, including a pocket version.... plus a leather bound version similar to the one in the video. One of the world's best games.... I play some, every day! Some people learn the game quickly, like I did, and some never do learn it, like several of my friends... who never master the spacial relationships... This group of videos should be very beneficial to those people......... Excellent!
Most grateful to have found your enlightening complete beginners series. Just bought a set (almost identical to the one in your video!) from a local charity shop but have never played and had no idea of the rules. Your videos make everything very clear. You have excellent teaching skills. Thank you.
Absolutely amazing tutorial! As a beginner, there are SO many tutorials on here, and sites online, but none are as informative (and easy to understand) as yours. Thank you!!!
Are you kidding me the clacking and the sounds on the wood are the best part, you slam those suckers down hard and with intent, and I best hear the die call outs in Turkish
I've just started to learn BG and have found your lessons really helpful! Thanks so much!
Really enjoyed the video series and looking forward to playing backgammon. Thought it was clear and easy to follow for someone with no knowledge of the game. Thanks
Thank you, this is awesome! I like that you take your time to explain everything. I just watched a video that attempted to explain the entire game in 3 minutes! Impossible! This series looks very promising for me.
This is a great introduction, learned a couple of things about the game already. Can't wait to see the rest of this series. :-)
You explained this game VERY WELL. Maybe you could include how many tokens you can have on one point. I know you'll want to separate them pretty fast, but in one video, there were 6 tokens on one point. What's the limit? Other than that, I feel confident to play now!! 😊
Smashing walkthrough. Thanks. It finally makes sense.
This should be number one tutorial many thanks im excited to buy me a set today and start playing.
Top notch tutorial!!! Bought a board this weekend and the instructions were terrible. You saved the day..
Enjoying your videos very much. Just started playing and your videos are explaining things very well, thanks.
Fantastic lesson and i did enjoyed as a biginner. Thanks Ensor42
That's really good of you to say. Many thanks.
Ensor42, thanks for really breaking it down. This has me interested
wow. first backgammon tutorial i actually GOT. thanks so much.
Excellent video! I didn't understand the other videos and you made this very clear. I am looking forward to the next part!
This relaxed me :)
Many thanks from a fellow Brit. Great series.
Thank You Ensor, finally get it! 😀
JUST the video series i was looking for. Understood everything i needed to! Great Videos!
Great style, lovely & clear!
you sound like sam tarley from game of thrones
It must be Sam, sounds just like him!!!
Thought I recognized the voice
Excellent - this is what I was looking for.
Great video. I haven't ever played Backgammon, and the other videos I've seen made no sense (not that I saw very many). I learned a lot in this six minutes. Thank you. Now for video 2.
Thank you for making you video. Very clear instructions and thorough.
Brilliant, Mr. Ensor.
omg this is soooo good for us beginners!!! i'm recommending!!
Thank you very much for saying so. It's really appreciated.
Thank you so much for all you easy to understand backgammon tutorials. Now i can enjoy the game! I wish you would make some video tutorials on how to play chess for beginners. Thank you!
Bro... Im not sure if you have seen Game of Thrones, but you sound exactly like Sam! AWESOME!
Great pointers! Thanks for the video.
