ABC 7 Chicago is marking 75 years on the air, in September 2023. Originally known as WENR and later WBKB, the station's call letters were changed to match their radio sister station in 1968. Headquartered inside the old State-Lake Theatre, the ABC-owned station was a perennial 3rd place loser, until a series of hirings and a newscast format change turned them into a dominant #1 for most of the last 55 years, including a current streak at the top that began in the mid-1980s.
Many familiar faces appear in these two promos, including long-deceased anchormen Fahey Flynn, Joel Daly, John Drury, & Floyd Kalber, weathermen John Coleman & Jerry Taft, plus living legends Linda Yu, Ron Magers, Kathy Brock & Alan Krashesky. Current lead anchors Cheryl Burton & Rob Elgas cameo, as well. But, of course, the most famous face seen in the queen of talk herself, Oprah Winfrey, who was hired by the station in 1984 to host 'AM Chicago,' which evolved into her legendary, 25-year talk show.
