For the exhaust I would pull it off and use heat on it to bend and stretch as needed. Glad you didnt give up!

Built an original issue when i was a young pup
Was so happy to get a reissue this year
I got the same red picture one as yours
Brought back great memories and enjoyed mine
I didnt have problems like you, mine went together great
This time, i made the drum functional by adding friction making it tight to turn
I can raise or lower the hook and attach chains to display the truck towing another
I just got another older issue( black truck on box) and i will really enjoy this one too
I wish i had a decal set from the red truck to detail my black one

I remember AMT kits having more difficulties than Monogram, Revell, MPC, etc.

I built that kit when I was 11 years old I have that kit here in 2024 at the age of 56 back then it went together real good

hello Ed.... being a newbie i would say that 25% of the issues were my fault... but the rest of the issues were the kit & the instructions... i hope your build goes easier than mine did... thx 4 watching & your comment.. vinny
You are not alone with the issues of this kit. In fact, your chassis and driveline looks a lot like mine, crookeder than a dogs hind leg! LOL! I started it probably two years ago, did a ton of paint work on all of it, and just got so frustrated with how aweful everything was going together that I boxed it up and put it on the shelf. It's a shame, because I was really excited to have a big wrecker in my collection, and that went out the window. I will finish it at some point, but not any time soon! We all know these old kits have issues, but this one REALLY does! I can totally sympathize with you! I hope yours works out better than mine!!!

Gen X modeler from Canada. AMT truck model kits, in general, remind me that it is hard to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. I remember trying to build these kits in the 70's/ early 80's and most joined the Airborne Division and jumped off the workbench. I remember building my first Ertl Blueprinter truck model and thought, WOW. You are doing a great job. The wiring on the motor and chassis is superb.

Nice tenacity Vinny.... Yeah the newer model plastic can really be a pain to glue since they started using recycled plastic and not virgin plastic!.. I'm sure Jeff would understand if you missed the deadline.

Good Afternoon! I can understand, Doc! I am part of a group Build for D-Day tomorrow, an RC Refurb of an old RC Tank we already own that would have been part of the fighting in Normandy in 44. I picked out an original 1/16 Heng Long Porsche King Tiger that I had been planning to do a rebuild on anyway. All well and good...so far...My mistake was picking a research tank model ( for a paint mule ) that turned out to be more complex than the big Tank will be. ( Hobby Boss 1/35 Porsche King Tiger mit der Zimmerit ) With health issues ( etc ) I just finished the Research Tank model in time for the due date tomorrow. Well, the RC version will look good if I can make it follow half the detail and paint work on the Hobby Boss. :o) Glad to see that you took the Bull by the Horns, Sir.

Well that was unfortunate that the model has been so troublesome. Seems like pre fitting everything is a must on these models. Looks like you are a good repair path.

I agree that sometimes when you have problems, you need to step away and other times you need to push through, and sometimes you need to take a big hammer to it. Have a good week.

I’m surprised you got this far Vinny it’s lookin good for a not so great kit these AMT truck kits need some attention and some new molds better directions and so on I say the 10th but runs to the end of June glad your going to finish it up k.u.t.g.w.

Finish it right and at your own pace, Vinny. The model stays longer with you than the satisfaction of finishing in a group build. 😅 All the best on overcoming those hurdles in the kit.

Sorry to hear that kit is giving you a hard time i know where you're coming from had my fair share of them AMT trucks have that kit in the stash good to hear you're not giving up on your build one thing to remember if its not a fun build leave it and try something else you can come back to it when you're ready 👍

Oh my Vinny! Buy newer glue bottle, buddy. I hate that you have to sand that great color. But I don't blame you for being frustrated. Yup you are like me, never a stalled project, just a new day👍👍👍

you have to remember Vinny, that kit came out in early 1970's'. They have improved a little bit

I know what you're talking about! I use tamiya extra thin glue and or differant thickness super glue. Have you ever tried stripping the paint off. I use a real strong soap. Can't think of the name. But I have also used brake fluid and easy off oven cleaner. Have to be extremely careful about the fumes. Wear a mask, keep it off your skin! Good luck!

hello Ed...part of the problem is i am a newbie to these models.. i have 30 years in model RRing.... but this is a different ball game...the instructions are terrible... the parts that needed to go into factory drilled holes the holes all had to be enlarged..... glue not adhering .. any how.. the reveal video will but up before the end of the month... thx 4 watching ..your sub & comment... vinny

Hi. Sir may I suggest try different glues on some of the sprue frame first. Find out which one works best on this particular type of plastic. It will save you a lot of time in the long run . I hope that you get there in the end. Best wishes from the UK.

@@dacuzzz6951 Hi Vinny. I here what your saying about your glue choice. I have a variety of glues , Tamiya , Humbrol liquid , Revell contacta , Gorilla glue two part epoxy. Even a impact glue from a local hardware store. Somestimes P.V.A. makes an appearance. Superglues are also used by me. The point that i,m making is that manufacturers sometimes use some odd plastics. So you have to change your angle of attack. Your a gifted modeller so I,m not going to teach you how to suck eggs but I have been making models for over forty years and I know that sometimes you have to change tack. Good luck on the build , I know that you,ll get there in the end. All the best from the UK.
Too bad about the issues on your model. Put it away for a little while, but don't get wrecked by your wrecker!

In my opinion, you need to change cement. I only use liquid cement.

Your liquid glue probably losing its strength, use tube glue, alot of these old models need to be washed with warm soapy water then rinse with distilled water (oil from production templates) alot of these old models have flaws on parts & instruction sheet & alot of times there are no part numbers on sprue's. Dont give up, i built 2 of these wreckers.......test fit,test fit, & test fit some more before you glue. I am like you, no paint before glue. Goodluck on your deadline.....
