Classic novels are classic because of their impact on the world (whether the literary or mundane). The reason we read books look this in my Lit class (IB World..) is because of their impact, a main focus of the course. After a certain point, the study of writing styles becomes redundant. Of course people like Fitzgerald and Hawthorne had unique writing techniques that influence today's authors, but literature is not just about how they put words on paper. It's about their meaning.
