They could. But not on the price bc it isn’t worth building up a whole factory only for the US market and the taxes to import are top high on trucks.
The other thing is that Scania is owned by Volkswagen and they own also 100% of Navistar. So they would had to fight one of their own daughters in the US against the powerfull big competitors.
I mean they definitely could compete especially on short distance hauling and city areas bc of the small footprint. And on long distance they would fit on the frame size of a Peter nearly a house in the cabin with all the befenits of a Scania.

But compared to a Volvo truck, here in the states, of the same year, there’s not much difference. Volvos have the air lock on the tilt steering. Heated and cooled seats, keyless entry and remote start, the Volvo dynamic steering is next level safety. The Volvo FMX 8x8 is a very capable off-road class 8 truck. Everything you find in a Volvo car or SUV, the trucks have.

I have been in love with Scania since my childhood. My late Uncle used to own a fleet of Benz, DAF, MAN, VOLVO, and SCANIA that were roaming around Congo D.R., Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Among the Scania, some were used as technical support vehicles, and uncle used to come with one of them by the house every time he was in town; he will get me drive around with me. In the area where I used to live, most of the trucks around were MAGIRUS DEUTZ, TOYOTA 6000, Renault JE 13, and the army dedicated 6x6 MAN. Since, the sound of a SCANIA was so distinctive, I could recognize it from a distance and scream UD (the truck had big U & D letters on the sides of the container that it used to have) every time my uncle had come around. I was like six years old at the time. I love the Scania content Bruce; keep them coming.

48 years driving Scanias , they are incredible and apart from one non V8 Scania I swore after a six cylinder I would never again buy any Scania unless it was a V8 …They really are mountain stormers with incredible torque and incredible engine/ gearbox braking that leaves the brakes cool at all times …The fuel consumption running at 44tons with 6 axles was 8 mpg …

There exists also a Finnish truck brand btw, Sisu. But they are a smaller manufacturer and for example the cabs are supplied by Mercedes. Presumably you don't have time to visit them when you're here (~50 miles west from Helsinki), but let's see, maybe you'll spot one on the road. :)

To put that in perspective, a VW Golf R have a base price of $45.455 in US. This exactly the same car have a base price of $87.450 in The Netherlands.
Same goes for a Tiguan, starts from $28k in US, $47.5 in Holland, and that car isn't even near the trimlevel of its US counterpart.

The gap between US semis and European today, is miles apart, tech wise the US trucks are just old hat now, a throwback to times gone long ago.
That is the reason the US don't want the more advanced European tech, its simply better than the US stuff, in most things not just trucks.

Ive always liked SCANIA from years ago . We had a pair of 340 HP conventional tri-axle dumps with Bibeau bodys that our drivers would fight over because they were so comfortable and easy to drive . Back in the '80s SCANIA pioneered things like the automatic shifting manual ten speed fully synchonized transmission , the gyro oil filter , and a tandem rear end with a shear pin in it so you didn't have to worry about ripping out the rears . There is an interesting back story about why SCANIA trucks are not sold in the US market . They do have stationary and marine engines for sale here , but basicly they felt they got royaly screwed over by the US EPA during the time of new emissions regulations for deisel engines . The deadline for compliance kept getting pushed out due to the lobby efforts from Cummins, Cat , Navistar , and Detroit Deisel . Scania's V-8 had already passed the test , then the regulations got changed . Back then the EPA test was $ 1 million dollars . Thats when they held up their middle finger to the US market .
