  • Cab view of Odakyu Electric Railway, Enoshima Line, Sagami-Ono to Fujisawa.
The Enoshima Line is a branch line that branches off from Odakyu's main line at Sagami-Ono Station and runs south. Although it is a branch line, the track is of high standard, and there is also a direct express train from Shinjuku Station.
This video is a little long, over 30 minutes. Take a look at a line without weeds on the tracks (although there are a few).
Odakyu Electric Railway is a private railway that opened in 1927 from Shinjuku to Odawara. Two years later, the Enoshima Line, featured in this video, opened. One of the purposes for which the Enoshima Line was built was to transport tourists to Enoshima, which was a popular tourist destination, and it is said that there was a time when the line performed better than Odakyu's main line between Shinjuku and Odawara.
Odakyu Electric Railway was founded by Toshimitsu Tsurumatsu, who was determined to start a railway business, but there were already railways built in the prime locations around Tokyo, so Toshimitsu had no choice but to obtain a construction license for the route of the current Odakyu Odawara Line, where there was no railway yet. Because of this, Odakyu was struggling financially when the line opened, and employees' salaries did not increase for many years. It is said that the Enoshima Line saved Odakyu's business.
Currently, the Enoshima Line is densely populated with houses, as usual. However, there is farmland here and there, and around Shonandai Station, the area where three railway lines converge is popular, and apartment buildings line the area.
At Fujisawa Station, the line connects with the JR Tokaido Line. The JR tracks run under the blue truss bridge. The Odakyu line makes a switchback at Fujisawa and continues to Katase Enoshima Station, which is close to Enoshima, but the train the camera is on ends at Fujisawa Station. Photographed in August 2024 (I took a photo of the evening view of Enoshima on this day, so I will upload that later. The train does not appear, though.)

A great catch of a busy line. Frequent stations with folks waiting for the train. Some with multiple tracks so express trains can zip past the locals. Frequent trains going the other way. Homes, apartments and businesses on both sides of the tracks. I thought I saw a greenhouse or two. Even some farms. And even a tunnel! Lush greenery, sometimes weeds, often hrubbery and trees, here and there, and in what appear to be parks. A beautiful sky overhead. So much packed into 27km! I don't know if you could do any better for a line that isn't in the mountains! Thanks so much for your time and effort, creating this great video!

This line was built primarily for the purpose of transporting tourists, as its final destination, Enoshima Island, has long been a popular tourist destination. In recent years, Enoshima is no longer as popular as it once was, and people have a variety of transportation options, so this line has become more of a commuter line. As usual, there are many houses clustered along the tracks, but there is still plenty of nature, making this an attractive area with a well-balanced environment.

A nice trip on a route that I don't think you've shown us yet 👍🤗
Directly behind Sakuragaoka station, I noticed that there must have been a railway connection for a factory or something similar here. The rail heads look very rusty - so they haven't been used for a long time - and secondly, in my opinion, the switches that you can see can no longer be used because the center piece is missing!
I wonder why the tracks that are no longer in use weren't removed - or were they just temporarily taken out of service?

I don't really know why the tracks are rusty. If I asked fans of this line why, I'm sure they would answer right away. There are too many.
The rusty tracks were originally used to store maintenance cars. Indeed, if we were to store passenger cars now, we would need a length of 10 cars, and the track shown in the photo is too short for that. Furthermore, the switches seem to have been simple, so the explanation that the tracks are for maintenance cars also fits that point.
The reason I hadn't taken any footage of this line until now is because I thought the cab view was monotonous. There are several lines that I haven't taken pictures of for the same reason, such as the Yokohama Line and Sagami Line. The main purpose of my ride on the Odakyu Line on this day was to take pictures of the illumination of Enoshima Island.
Still, I might have to go to these lines on any day. It is important to keep records, because we know very well that footage that seems ordinary and of little value at the time it is shot can become extremely valuable later on - and this applies not only to railways.
