Cacti Anatomy - Plant One On Me - Ep 033

  • Thirty three weeks ago I launched Homestead Brooklyn’s Plant One On Me, an informal question-and-answer series on all your green home and gardening tips. Questions get sent in via here-below the videos, on Instagram @homesteadbrooklyn #PlantOneOnMe, or Facebook @summerrayneoakes and @homesteadbrooklyn. Last week we launched a new version of Plant One On Me-Field Trip editions, which are so fun. We had such a tremendous response to the last one, that I figured we'd put up more Field Trips, including a second part to last week's episode on cacti.
    It seems as if people couldn't get enough of the Yiddish folk opera, cacti-loving, greenhouse-owning Richard, so this episode is all about cacti anatomy. We get...ahem...a little up close and personal with the three different types of cacti and learn a hell of a lot in the course of 11 minutes.
    Richard shows off his full-of-character cacti every Saturday (during the warm season) at the McCarren Park Greenmarket and his son mans the Fort Greene Greenmarket. If you see them-be sure to stop by, say “hi” and get a cool cacti.

    Hey Summer,
    I'm a big fan - I have been following you since 2017 and have always found your content to be super informative, entertaining, and tasteful. SO fast forward to now - I have always loved this episode and found it to be very helpful in how I care for my cactus plants because of how the science is explained. So I decided to show it to my 3rd graders as we are talking about organism adaptations and this turned out to be GREAT!!!!

    I was somewhat disappointed that he completely omitted two wonderful sections of the Cactaceae, Rhipsalideae and Hylocereeae.
    These groups include the various types of "holiday cactus" and "orchid cactus." How could they be forgotten?
    There is also Pereskia, the only cacti that normally bear real leaves.

    Great vid summer! I have a question about the Boat Lily. I rescued one last week. By the looks of this plant it was an older one...it's stem was thick & about 6-8" long and mostly bare from losing leaves through out it's lifetime. It had 3 plants on it which were flowering but looked ill. It had brown spots on some of the leaves & one plant looked dull. I took them all from the Momma plant, rinsed & cleaned all of the prev soil off, rinsed & dried the entire plant then gave it a good spray of alcohol then rinsed & dried it again. lol I repotted them in cactus soil (since the previous grower had it in regular soil, soaked) ....all in seperate pots. This left the main stem/mother plant bare. Will this plant grow more leaves ect? Could I prop the mother plant more since it is still really long?

    Question about hydrospikes-I bought some hydrospikes a couple weeks ago after seeing your videos (love them!!!), however, the spikes seemed to dry out after a few days and I would have to fill not the jar, but the spike again. How is this better than just watering the plant every couple days? Thank you! 😊🌱

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  Před 6 lety +1

      They will occasionally dry out, but mine often don't dry out for months. Be sure that 1.) you soak the terra cotta portion of the spike before placing in soil and 2.) you water the surrounding soil well before placing in the hydrospike. If soil is far too dry, the plant will pull out water too quickly. Also make sure that the water doesn't dry out of water container. But yeah, you will have to reset them, but it shouldn't be every couple days-more like every month or two.
