WWF Smackdown! was released for the PlayStation back in 2000. Following the likes of WWF War Zone and WWF Attitude, the game gave wrestling fans a brand new way to play WWF matches on console and thanks to new developer Yukes working on the game, WWF Smackdown on PS1 was very different to past PS1 WWF games.
While not exactly similar, WWF Smackdown took inspiration from the previous AKI games by greatly simplifying the controls. War Zone and Atittude forced players to use button combinations in order to pull off basic moves. In Smackdown, everything was made way more accessible and easy with a much more approachable control scheme; anyone could pick up Smackdown and master the game. Feedback was very positive, and so began a long lasting relationship between Yukes and the WWF that brought us the Smackdown series of games (including Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth and Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain). The succesful run of Smackdown games can all be traced back to Smackdown 1 on PS1.

I was a little bummed that I couldn't get wwf wrestlemania 2000 for Christmas because n64 games were a lot more expensive. I got the first smackdown instead and ended up LOVING it. It's so fun. Not as good as the n64 games imo but it does different things, giving a very arcade experience. To the point where I was hype as hell to get smackdown 2 when it came out!

Great video as always, this was my 5th wrestling game I ever owned as well as it being my 1st ever 3D wrestling game.
This game is decent, it’ll always hold that special spot in my heart but looking back SD2: KYR was a HUGE improvement.

One of the things I like most about wrestling, is even though I don't like wrestling, I still love hearing about it despite not watching it for 19 years. I stopped in 2003, I've tried a couple of times since, the odd mania, but nothing ever got me back into it. It seems a lot of people share that view too, the fact you used to like it has you in it for life, even after you can't bear to watch it anymore.

You nailed it. It might not be the best wrestling game of the bunch but when we were stuck extremely mediocre games like War Zone and and Attitude this was a MUCH welcome change. I played this and almost this exclusively from the release til Smackdown 2 came out. Creating your own PPV i found fascinating and would do that for hours!

Okay, so I picked this up a few years ago and just kinda tired it up to test it, but didn’t spend too much time with it. I was hoping you were going to cover this game, so watching this is even more awesome right now personally! This game has WAY more depth to it than I was aware of, and this is totally awesome! I’ll definitely have to play this sometime soon! Thanks for the awesome in-depth coverage of this game!

I worked at an import game shop near Baltimore, MD and someone who worked on this game used to come in a lot. One day he slipped me a burned disc of an early playable version, maybe a few months before it released. It surprisingly had the whole roster that made the retail version, but I'll always remember how weird it was that anyone who didn't have their finisher animated yet, like Jeff Hardy, just used a German suplex.

  • @DARC-87

Having things like a ladder match, an actual Royal Rumble, having more than 4 wrestlers in the ring. These are all absolute game changera.
The finishers were so good here too. The only goofy thing I remember about the controls here was everyone had an option to catapult your opponent. A lot of times just off into nothingness

Damn this brought back some memories! I'd only played Attitude before this came out, I remember getting the Demo with a PSX magazine and my first match I failed hard because it was so different to what I was used to lol. But I was blown away by how it looked and the fast pace. Sank so many hours into that season mode.

Great video! Power Move Pro Wrestling was the first game I ever owned on PS1. I remember seeing the previews of it in magazines when it was Toukon Retsuden. Brings back great memories. Smackdown 1 was truly the beginning of an era. I know HCTP gets all the praise as the cream of the crop, but I think WWE 13 is the best game they ever created. It doesn't get nowhere near the praise it deserves for being a modern classic amongst the Mount Rushmore of wrestling games

The thing that makes Smackdown's in-ring visual presentation so much better than War Zone and Attitude's is the variety of camera angles, and the lighting.
The lighting in Attitude and War Zone was very flat, with minimal cast shadows from a single light source; whereas Smackdown is rendering multiple cast shadows from various light sources - just how it is in an arena, along with core shadows and reflected light on the models themselves, which gives a more convincing and true to life appearance.
