  • I gathered all my colored slip tests and put them in a FREE pdf for you to download. I have been making colored slip for a while now and I love working with Mason stains to make my own colors for sgraffito and other decoration techniques with slip. In this video I compare a few colors mason stain with underglazes. I have found what I pay for a Mason stain goes a lot further than what I pay for a pint of underglaze.
Now, I also love underglazes! The colors are beautiful, they are great to work with, just more expensive than making your own colored slips.
You do have to put in the time and effort of making colored slips and test them with your clay and glaze and firing temperature.
I hope this free pdf gives you a starting point from where you can further experiment with making colored slips for your ceramic pieces.
    Have fun!

Yes, I'm feeling the "burn" with the cost of underglazes. Going to embark on this new project; studio will need another station. Thanks so much for your generous sharing. You made me smile today. Kate

great video! very helpful pdf! I am very greatful for the information you collected.
How is the mixability amongst them, for the mason stain slips? is there something funky going to happen when they touch/mix?

Thanks so much for making these videos. I’ve actually learned a lot watching them. This video is especially informative for me because I was asking the same question(s) you’ve brought up here; particularly with regard to wouldn’t mason stains be more cost effective than glazes.
My question is probably more subjective, but I do hope you answer it. Where is it cheapest, without compromising on quality, to buy mason stains? I’d still prefer dipping in a clear glaze after in order to get that nice shiny coating. I don’t have a kiln yet, tho I am keeping an eye out for a good used electric single phase kiln of a moderate size.

@@SammiJoReviews Hi Sammi Jo! I think Mason stains are a brand, much like Ikea. So the quality shouldn't differ where you buy it. If I buy Ikea in the US or Netherlands it shouldn't be different. I off course do not know what suppliers do with their stock of glazes, clay and stains. I have not experienced difference from suppliers I buy Mason stains from. Except for price sometimes and shipping costs. Hope this helps! Btw, percentages for adding sfains to a glaze are different from adding them to a slip. Check the Mason website for more info on that.

@@nukuaceramicsbonaire Thank you so much. I am debating on buying stains & glazes in small quantities at a time, which allow me to build up supplies for glazes, stains, & probably more underglazes. (I reclaim clay to keep extra… build up supply) I still have underglazes along with a bag of kiln wash a friend sent to me.
As soon as we are able to buy enough materials, my husband plans to start building me a pottery studio that will be big enough for a kiln, fingers crossed… We are debating between a 12ft x 12ft or 12ft x 14ft. I want to have a lean-to area like yours so I can have a kiln half outside but half inside too, which does away with the need to buy the vent system. I have enough thrown now to fill a small kiln; however, it isn’t easy (or affordable) to find someone willing to do a firing at a rate that’s affordable. I wouldn’t mind a decent used electric kiln, even if it doesn’t have the pretty digital touchpad. At least with an older kiln, I feel like I’d learn so much more.
Oh how I wish you & I lived close to each other. I believe I could learn even more from you. The fact that we’re both southpaws (lefties) is an added bonus. 😊☺️

I also love the orange color. I’ve tried the Mango Mason stain and for some reason I can’t get the color It’s supposed to be. I’ll try the orange. I mix the stains with my Kittens clear glaze to make colored celadons.👍🏻
