And whenever I saw that Game Over screen, with that tense music and the whole "falling down helplessly to a bunch of spikes", that legit scared me. I always covered my eyes at that. I was noticing the exact same thing. I played N64 version a lot and it was way better than this, besides the inferior graphics. That Liu Kang fatality was pure horseshit on this Gold version. You only see some bizarre pixels on the screen and no blood. On the N64 you could see the body exploding perfectly and the blood hitting the screen properly and even according to where the body parts where touching it.

Noob Saibot is also a secret character in this game. If I recall correctly his fatalities are the sub zero freeze / shatter and the reiko shuirkens. I think MK4 was the first game to establish that noob was the original sub zero, thus having the ice fatality.
The Tanya neck twist is hella underrated especially if she actually twists their neck 3 times and it's not a replay lol. It looks like an original neck break.
I remember seeing these fatalities as a 4 year old and I thought it was the coolest ones ever now 20 years later they really dont look as good as they did back then😅
To be fair, Liu Kang's dragon Fatality and Scorpion's giant scorpion one are really awesome. Hell, I'd probably play this game again just to do those Fatalities.
My FAVORITE thing about this game is if you do Scorpion's kick button grab on Raiden you break his arm and Raiden yells "AAHHHH MY LEG". My friend and I died soooo hard when we played MK4 on my PS years ago.

So, by the time this was on the way, we were mostly tired of the series. They've more than made up for this crap.

Camera glitches, buggy fatalities, blood effects not showing up at all and a ton of other problems. Maybe reviewing the PS1 version instead would've made a better impression on you guys, the game is not that bad, the 3D era had to start somewhere after all

Well Cyrax, Mileena, Kitana, Kung Lao and Baraka were not in the original MK4 thats why they are so bad and the fatals are shit, its clear that the gold version was rushed.
I can't be too hard on them for these, they were kinda battling the start of the decline of arcades at the time and dabbling with 3D as a whole, so by and large they were just like "let's update the ones we already did in 3D."

I've seen so many of these that I'm able to accurately predict what Max will rate things. I can sometimes predict Steve's too, but he's usually crazy with his. Kenny is unable to be predicted however.
The ONLY fatality that everyone remembers in this game for being dope is Quan Chi's. Because he rips off your leg and then NON-STOP BEATS YOU WITH IT, even after it's supposed to be over. That's what makes it 10/10. And they actually brought this back in MK9.

It was that way for me too lol. I remember i used to be scared of the tree on the left edge of the living forest stage.. the creepy smile that tree had with its spiky teeth always gave me the chills. I love that stage now tho. All of the stages I love now really.
The big problem I had with MK4 when it came out at the arcades is that even back then it really wasn't good at all, definitely including the graphics. And when MK Gold came out it REALLY wasn't looking good next to other games on the same system. The first SoulCalibur (on the Dreamcast) looked a hundred times better and animated so much smoother. They could have VASTLY improved MK4 from arcade port to properly refined for the Dreamcast but nooooooo, why doing that? Like, WHY doing that at all heh? The original MK4 Arcade version's hardware was so inferior to the Dreamcast it's not even funny (System 16, which was used even up to the 3rd revision of the Arcade version of MK4). I always regarded MK4 as one of the most uninspired 3D fighting games of all time. I think I preferred War Gods over MK4 and that's saying a lot for me. Now that I'm watching this I am only reminded of absolutely everything I knew about it and then some. It's just as bad as it ever has been on any platforms it was made for. Ugh.
MK4... the very first mortal kombat that no one was excited about. I remember being slightly disappointed at this game when I was a kid, mostly because of how amazing Ultimate MK3 was, it's hard to compete with that game.
If it wasn't obvious enough, Kano was meant to be in this game. But they decided they needed more new blood so we got Jarek instead. Was also too late to do new fatals. IIRC

Unfortunately they're playing Mortal Kombat Gold, which was a version of MK4 that came out later on. Some ports of it are glitchy as fuck. They obviously have one of the glitched versions. A lot of the fatalities suffer as a result.
I hate giving Max dislikes but I don't like how they always treat MK Gold as MK4, when they are clearly not the same game! It's the same as Street-Fighter II and Super Street-Fighter II. Even though they are kinda similar they are still not the same game and offer different experiences. C'mon Max, give MK4 arcade version/N64/PS1 a chance!!
