Then the Gurney bubble door was placed on an RCR GT40 and then wrapped in McLaren livery. The Superformance hero GT40 in McLaren livery used in filming was built with a Gurney bubble. Actually, the exhaust system on the Daytona would be illegal for street use in the majority of states in the U.S. I have heard more than one of them at Goodwood with packing stuffed into the side exhausts to meet local requirements. By the way, I'm curious as to why you think it would be possible for more than one car to have the same license plate? Nope. Not true. If you're looking for a villain, you might want to try the ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest) - the people who run the LeMans race. They originally told Ford that a dead heat would be an acceptable finish. Instructions were given to the drivers based on that assurance from the ACO. Sometime later, the ACO came back and changed their original determination. There were no radios between the drivers and crews in those days, and the decision was made, that short of calling the cars into the pits, trying to communicate through the pit board system would only cause confusion with the drivers. So, the original directions to the drivers, based on ACO assurances of a tie being acceptable were allowed to stand by Carroll Shelby as they had to win the race. But, I'm guessing that the facts and truth don't matter to you - you're just looking to be pissed off at Ford.

    • @TheNinjaMarmot
      @TheNinjaMarmot Před 3 lety

@@buckhorncortez I don't think there is any record of that. At least I cannot find any. Ford wanted that finish. That was it. This only came from Ford - Leo Beebe. (I believe they lied to cover themselves)
      corporate.ford.com/articles/history/ford-gt40-origins-le-mans-committee-victory.html
"The ACO ruling is a matter of some debate as there was nothing written in the sporting regulations from that year that accounted for the rules in the event of a tie.
The decision to notify the drivers of the change in ACO policy rested with Leo Beebe and Carroll Shelby. As the two conferred, there were a number of considerations. While Ken Miles had done the bulk of the race prep work on the Mark II to prepare it for competition since his first drive in February, 1965, Bruce McLaren had been with the program since its inception in 1963 and had always been a true team player driving at the assigned speed. Both drivers felt they could win in a race to the finish as neither had more than a lap or two lead during the second half of the race. Leo Beebe ultimately made the decision to not notify the drivers and let the dead heat occur, which would make the McLaren team the victor. Beebe later noted that “to have Ken win would have been more expedient and popular, but the extent to which McLaren and Amon had played exactly according to our rules mitigated against Miles. The result was not necessarily even popular with me.” Ultimately, Beebe felt that Ken Miles trying to push the Dan Gurney car at Sebring was a big enough strike against him to give the nod to the McLaren/Amon team."
This sheds another light on the controversy. Notice Caroll never said anything about the ACO Rule change. Infact, nobody else mentioned it!
      www.dailysportscar.com/2020/04/28/from-the-archives-who-really-won-le-mans-66.html
Carroll Shelby: “In 1966, Ford didn’t cost Ken Miles the race at Le Mans, I did, and I regret it to this day. Leo Beebe came up to me and said ‘ Who do you think should win the race?’ I thought, well hell, Ken’s been leading for all of these hours, he should win the race. I looked at Leo Beebe and said ‘What do you think ought to happen Leo?’ He said ‘ I don’t know, I’d kind of like to see all three of them cross the finish line together.’
Leo Beebe did not tell me what to say or do so I said: ‘Oh hell, let’s do it that way then,’ not knowing that the French would interpret the rules the way that they did. Ken should have won the race, and in most everyone’s mind, he did win the race. That was my fuck up, I take full responsibility for it, and I’m very sorry for it because, as you know, Ken was killed at Riverside two months later. Every time you go racing, you put your reputation on the line.”
Carroll Smith - Shelby American Race Team Manager: “I knew the ramifications of a dead heat at Le Mans. My job was to know all of those things, but I wasn’t consulted when the decision was being discussed.”

@@buckhorncortez - Excellent description of who the true villain really was! I'm so tired of adolescent Dilberts blaming the fiasco on Ford. They are dumb enough to think the movie is the gospel!

    Go SPEED RACER!!
    #1 Ford GT 40
Only Ford beat ferrari 3 years in a row!!!! Fact.
Only one American car manufacturer Ford went out to prove american excellence in racing.
    Road racing not 1/4 mile.
The craftsmanship in a road RACER is perfection.
All the best cornering acceleration bracking ..
    Hour's of dependability not seconds.
Oh well I'm going on and on,. Good day
