  • 1 piece of plywood, 10 food grade screens plus a bunch of salvaged materials was formed into a solar dehydrator on wheels. When the summer harvest is providing, Jasper Snow Rosen and John Muirhead have been thinking ahead to preserving goods for splitboard, surf and camping missions when winter comes. The last few years we've been using little electric dehydrators, but we got inspired by some friends up north who built one of these, found some plans and went for it. We're now able to dry out solid batches at a time, using only the power of the sun!

    Great video, but how did those dehydrated apples turned out?

      Hey! They turned out decent, the issue we ran into was not enough hours of full sun on the property. So once the temp cooled down they began to rehydrate ... Thinking of adding a little heater to supplement the temperature overnight

      @@johnmuirhead8944 Have you thought about adding a copper pipe water rad inside the dehydrator? And a solar fan to move the air through the dehydrator to move the hot air a bit more? Great design, thanks for sharing. Our garden season is super short here in North Central Ontario, and I've been thinking of dehydrating too. Take care. Be safe. Maureen

      Instead of aluminum sheet you should use roof black natural slate tile + Put some natural thermal insulator. You will get a better temperature. If too hot just place a piece of plywood on a small surface of the solar part. You need good ventilation to get rid of moister

      @@cabinlife2347 Hey Maureen, a rad inside is a cool idea, or even just a heater over night so it doesnt rehydrate once the suns gone. And for sure a fan is a great idea.

    what kind of mesh are you using? most of them have cancer-causing metals, usually, they don't label them and tell you those facts

    Yeah no, I can show anyone how I’m building something, that works for me but if I fail to teach them how to build one as well that works for everyone. Isn’t that the whole purpose of you tube? I can go to your Facebook and see that you built a dehydrator and say oh snap that’s cool. But here you give us nothing, not where you got the plans and not how your produce turned out. In future videos if you cherish your viewers you may want to think about these things.

    • @johnmuirhead8944
      @johnmuirhead8944 Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah I guess it's not so much a tutorial video, that would be difficult since we were just learning ourselves along the way! Hope to inspire others to try something out and see how it works for you.
