BAKU - The mainland of Southeast Asia, historically known as Indochina, is home to a wide range of ethnicities that extend across a vast territory. Spread interchangeably are forests, mountains, valleys, rivers, deltas and coastlines. With such a divergent environment, the nations of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam have distinctly different identities, beliefs and geopolitical needs.

*lists every biome but deserts*
I was searching for this comment lmao
We do have some coastal areas where large dunes of sand takeover the area, but there's definately no desert in South East Asia. Media can be deceptive 😂
Google & CZcams " Mui Ne sand dunes" , in Vietnam, you will see
This video not only was interesting, but beautiful to watch. Thank you for making such beautiful maps. They make everything so much clearer to understand.
They are awesome maps. I constantly go to the CIA World Factbook for data and these guys really put great maps relevant to their topics at hand.
Not even a single word wasted. Quality of these videos are out of my reach, you are a legend Shirvan!
Big shout out to you guys, always great videos, thanks to the patreon members who help make it happen also.
Been waiting for a Report for South East Asia. Glad that Caspian Report has Part 2 of SEA. I hope you will cover the Borneo island. Looking forward. Very many thanks again.
Have been traveling this region for 6 months now and it’s a really awesome to see a good informative video about this!
Thanks for making a video focusing on Southeast Asia, I can't wait for the upcoming parts!
Thank you, Shirvan. I like your videos the best on this channel. Please keep doing these!
great work as always, thanks!
Fascinating. Another good one Shirwan, keep up the good work!
This a is an amazing video! Wee love this channel!!
Great channel! i came here from Cities of the Future!
love this channel
Wow, yes, this has been - yet another - super-fantastic-interesting report!
Shirvan you are one my teachers.
I have learn so much from you.
The synthesized political conclusions and points you make are gold.
I dont have time to go deep into political theory and philosophy but with people like you explaining the core ideas i am assembling bit by bit my political thought.
I've learned that basically everything is down to geography, thanks to this guy!
Please do geopolitics of Africa that would be awesome
Isolated from Eurasia by the Sahara. They have thick forests and not many navigable rivers making transport quite difficult as well as tropical diseases and climate.
Great replies thank you both!
The continent has always fascinated me, one with so much potential but with great hurdles to overcome, both geographical and socially
Glenn Cross literally goes to show that you know nothing about African history lol. Hurrr, the Mali/Ghana/Songhai empire were all just small warlords! Said no one ever.
if he talked about how the formation of an East African Federation would change the game that would make my day!
Counting to infinity will be easier than that.
Shirvan is the best
Genghis Khan always a good way to get my geopolitical info
Genghis Khan Do you know where he's from?
MarkusVFG Azerbaijan
SMELLTHEGLOVE no he is from Sweden
Genghis Khan actually he's too stoic but its fine
A very informative geopolitical snapshot, complete with small history for perspective. Thanks for posting.
Great video as always. Very informative
This was very informative. Thank you. I learned a lot.
Great report, very informative, thank you.
hey shirvan, would you do a geopolitics of ex jugoslavia? :D
good job on your videos! keep it up! i totaly love how you report on all those interesting topics from a neutral non biased perspective!!
What an AWESOME clip and info. Thank you ! But GREAT thanks to the host for mentioning the word, SAIGON ! Saigon is ALIVE.
Westerners in this comment section who think Chinese influence is new in the region are like hipsters who think they "discovered Vietnamese food." They don't know history and raced forward with statements that lacked context from a native's perspective. Let me be clear, this is not a defense of China's current presence or any of its political actions but rather from an Asian historical perspective the fact that westerners think this is something "new" severely lacks an understanding of the region's history and identity as a whole.
I cringe from a historical and technical perspective more than a moral one. If anything it's a repeating trend like the tides rather than a post- Cold War outrage. The fact that they tend to regard Chinese influence only as PRC is ignoring all the dynasties preceding it: hence my claim of being very short sighted and not from a native POV.
For one thing China's history is intimately tied with at least several of the local powers since the very beginning. A good look at several of the nearby nation's histories and you see that ancient polities such as Nanyue (Vietnam), Funan (Cambodia), whose history is largely preserved and kept from the Chinese sources, whose modern name is retained based on what the Chinese historians called them. The Chinese had essentially colonized and occupied Vietnam as part of itself for around 1,000 years- in fact Vietnam was a province during the Han, Sui and Tang dynasties. Socially Vietnam and China shares many similarities, from a Confucian culture to an emphasis on family, revere for elders, and a meritocratic outlook based on education.
The Chinese had also maintained extensive trade relationships with the SEA local polities for over 2,000 years since the Qin dynasty. Let's not forget that the SEA was the maritime portion of the Silk Road. The Chinese traded with the Chams of Champa and the Khmers. The Chinese expat community in Thailand is the oldest in the world and has over 1,000 year of history, in fact various Thai kings have Chinese lineages, the Kings of Ayutthaya nominally claimed Chinese heritage. In fact both the militant liberator King Taksin and the Chakri dynasty (of modern Thailand) that succeeded him both claimed Chinese heritage. The entire region- and by extension all the way into modern Indonesia and the Philippines all had extensive trade with the Ming. It's an old not a new phenomenon. If anything Mao's extreme isolationism and Cold War meddling was an aberration.
My point being- please harmonize the extant backdrop of existing history with contemporary geopolitics. Each nation's circumstances are different, and like Shirvan's video, please allow for such complexity. After all, to sway an entire region under an oversimplified meta-narrative is rather presumptuous, no?
Tributary System and All under Heaven aka Tianxia.
What westerners are you referring to? What westerners who think that China's influence in the region is new? It is well know that was a influence in the region since the beginning of time. However, Communist China's new militarism and using that military influence in the region to such a extent is rather new in spreading and enforcing that power for China and also for Communism!
PRC China is exploiting its neighbors and none of them like the PRC. It's that simple. This coming from a non-westerner.
They may have traded with our city-states and kingdoms a long time ago here in maritime SE Asia, but that doesn't mean they own the seas our Austronesians ancestors have been sailing for thousands of years before the first Chinese dynasty. They may have conquered Nanyue, Taiwan, Tibet, and Xinjiang, but the keyword here is _conquer._ It wasn't a voluntary assimilation. And they've destroyed most cultures they've subsumed.
We are far smaller and far poorer nations. But that doesn't give PRC the right to push us around.
They're a colonial power a century too late and pretending like what they do is completely fine while apparently incapable of understanding why everyone around them, and I mean _everyone,_ hates them. What western powers think is irrelevant. This is what us, Southeast Asians, think of the PRC.
Dragon's Armory as filipino, I'm fine with the Chinese but we don't like China's current policy of imperialism in the region.
HoiNam Superior Southern Chinese your head is getting bigger yet your eyes is still small.
As always you're the best Caspian.
Excellent job, thank you!
Nice video as always.
Another great vid! Please do the Geopolitics of Canada sometime in the future! Thanks! :)
Thank you for that video !
I come for the geopolitics, I stay for the timelapses. Well done as usual!
I love you vidoes man, so informative and interesting
Fascinating, as always.
Amazing Work, I think you should do a series on North Africa that will be interesting especially with Events in Libya
Another awesome and informative video. Given Vietnam's long coastline and strong military, I might have expected you to name them as a potential regional power, but Thailand's central position in the region is also a strong factor in their favour.
i not sure about this, but i think thailand's economical infrastructure maybe stronger than vietnam?
Mike Hunt currently ASEAN’s regional power is Indonesia but I don’t think that would change or Indon will be replaced.
thailand have the advantage to be the center of asean it infrastructure connect most of the asean member so the trade will be circolatd in thailand and it economy is very stable as well as the ranking .
it has a good infrastructure as well as security such as hospital , policing is easier to acess
mattia chanon however there are limitations to this and Indonesia has advantages over Thailand. But Thailand has advantages over Indonesia
Indonesia advantages
*strongest army in ASEAN region (disputed but somehow correct)
*manages to quell seperatist groups and make them mostly irrelevant. This can be attributed to the decentralization program of Indonesia after Suharto’s fall, Pancasilla ideology which promotes nationhood with multiculturalism and a strong armed forces.
*Is already the regional power in ASEAN
*Have friendly neighbors (yes Malaysia is friendly and their rivalry is superficial)
Thailand advantages
*A lot of land suited for agriculture.
*One of the largest rice producer
*Have a big manufacturing base specially automobiles
*not an archipelago
*Has a better road network than Indonesia
indonesia have a strong military indeed it is true since they have a hude population but the problem is that it is still too difficult to mobilize all the troops since the infrastructure is still bad in fect there are still many area that is still hard to deliver food or electricity .
thailand have multiculturalism too in the south most are malay in the northerneast are issan (they are thai peaple but more similar to laos , in the center many are chinese dicendent and in the industry zone eastern-center are khmer ,in the northern there are million of myanmar minority that came to live in thailand not to mention about 2million myanmar that came to work in thailand seeking a better life and jobs.
PS.in my opinion singapore is the best candidate but they are too small
Man you have improved your pronunciation a lot! Congrats!
Looking forward to Part 2
another excellent video
Nice work... Best wishes
amazing video as always shirvan!, can you do maritime southeast asia next?
Very good as usual
I'm a simple guy, I see Caspian report video, I like.
Can’t wait for part 2
This channel is awesome
great video!
Thailand and laos are probably two most important countries in indochina. First, Thailand has ability to shorten the marine trafic from indian ocean to gulf of thailand. This shortened trafic will benefit Vietnam, myanmar and Philippine. The second important country is Laos. Laos although landlocked can connect 5 countries toghether. Its central position can create great benefit for banking snd trading.
Hi I have been a long time subscriber to the channel. You have been great in providing such rich content in geo politics. Could you please create one for sri Lanka too.
Salam dude. Mashala on the channel and the videos. I was wondering if you could do something about my motherland, Crimea/Qirim. Sagul
great. very informative
Wonderful and heartwarming story.
Hi Shirvan. Absolutely love your videos but I have one tiny little criticism... any chance you could use different music occasionally? The calming piano is nice but starts to grate after a while. Using different music could give each video its own character as well.
awesome, thank you
Great channel
I'm looking forward to part 2
Most of your infos are true, and unbiased. I like it!
Great video brother but due to low energy in voice it sounds dull and also music.Overall very comprehensive and informative video.
Excellent video! One thing... I found the GDP numbers to be different from those shown at 10:28. For example, I found Thailand's GDP per capita to be $5,907 instead of $17,870. I also tried PPP. And the other countries seem different as well. Any idea why?
This vid also made me understand why china wants Tibet.
ALL RIVERS ORIGINATE THERE!
Also there are lots of Buddhists there (China and all of Southeast Asia) they want control over that religion badly.
@@Thor-Orion not control bruh... But to cleanse it, u must be knowing, they are communist🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@RajnishKumar-rh4ru It don't have any matter with communist, the matter is the ambition bureaucracy. (i guess ?)
@@RajnishKumar-rh4ru Secondly, the 'communist' thing you learn in school compare 'China Communist Party' may be a different thing. One is idea (which invent in last century), The present 'communist' is a whole noveau thing.
Do you create the maps by your self or where do you find them? - great video btw
Best one, Shirvan
Pie chart to represent gdp per capita lmao
Yeah he should have used a bar chart. But great video so who cares.
Agreed love the channel and the vid, just thought it was funny
he considered the region southeast asia and is making comparisons
*+LEGIOII BRITTANICA* Haha, thanks, I was soo confused about that. I couldn't really register it as GDP, the pie chart messed with me mind.
LEGIOII BRITTANICA you again nice to see you here :D
Well-Done & request an update of part 1&2
You should do a video on the US - europe relationship. it feels like old aliences are shifting a little bit, and trade war is an excuse to gain poletical concessions. love to hear you thought on that subject!
i knew nothing about the region, but i do now! thanks!
A new one eh?I'm ready
i tried to put "zawhol" in translate but couldn't find anything. what language is the word with which you end your videos?
Best geopolitical channel on CZcams.. Even better than BBC..
As always a great video! Could you make one about the geopolitics of Brazil?
Raphael Sauer Mercosaur looks promising with Brazil leading. It has the same car plates which ASEAN can’t even do and has a parliament. I think that Brazil’s foreign policy will be affected by its elections.
Can you make a video on Gopolitics of Mexico or North America as a whole, Please. By the way congratulations for your videos, are always interesting.
Nice, very interesting...
I just want to know about the maps used. What is that software. I can see terrains, mountains, vegetation.
Finally geopolitics overview of south east Asia
I think this quote from the Thai/Siamese king Rama III at his death in 1851 perfect symbolises the political situation of Indochina during the 19th century, "Our wars with Burma and Vietnam were over, only the threats of the Westerners was left to us. We should study their innovations for our own benefits but not to the degree of obsession or worship.".
The situation right now in Indochina is completely different, long gone are the days when thousands of European and American soldiers were stationed in the region, now it appears that old local rivalries have reasserted themselves immediately after the Vietnam War with China invading Vietnam in 1979, Vietnam invading Cambodia in 1978, Thailand having border wars and skirmishes with Laos, Burma/Myanmar and Cambodia with the latest one happening as recent as 2011.
There might be a Balkan style conflict
if the france could return laos and cambidia to thailand what will happen.....
Lanna Regions are not that close to laos but it is a good things for thai and laos to united as a country since we are all tai ,but laos alone is too weak no sea port and now the chinese are invading laos because of the corrupted gov.
LAOS in term of cultural and tradition and it people are very close to thai but the gov are close to vietnam and china since they are communist and china give a lot of money to the gov.
laos will be an eletricity hub of asean and thailand is the most industralized and logistic hub of asean what would happen if we are united and remember thailand importe most of it eletricity so if we are united laos it will benefit us both
true but it also because of thailand invest the most in laos afther china www.investlaos.gov.la/index.php/resources/statistics
laos GDP per capita is doing well is because of it small population
and look at the import and export partner of laos
atlas.media.mit.edu/en/profile/country/lao/
Finally!
Excellent video, unfortunately I was expecting a really detailed video about Myanmar... However I do appreciate the attention to said country. When you release part II I'll donate $50.
Do a geopolitical and or combination of understanding mentality of Brazil and I'll again offer 500.
CaspianReport Shirvan to what extent do you think relations between Vietnam and the U.S. will grow?
T WE until china is no longer a threat.
Vietnam would be allied with US against northern big bro China, like China was allied with US against northern big bro China in Cold War...
CaspianReport Shirvan you should do a review of the book "THE WORLD WAS GOING OUR WAY: THE KGB AND THE BATTLE FOR THE THIRD WORLD" using uncovered soviet secrets from THE MITROKHIN ARCHIVE and authored by Christopher Andrew and Vasili Mitrokhin, authors of The Sword and the Shield.
What are some of the conclusions that it arrives upon?
well done shirvan
Really appreciate these reports but would love to get some links to your soruces to confirm your reports, thanks!
Good video. Keep in mind, however, that the capital of Myanmar Nay Pyi Taw is new, existing only since 2005. And by that time, the military regime had run largely out of steam. The 20th-century fighting happened from the old capital of Rangoon (Yangon). It appears that the new capital was placed in the center to better control the territory, and also to make foreign invasion more difficult. After all, in 2003, the Generals worriedly looked at the Iraq invasion and wanted to secure themselves. The capital is designed in such a way - with wide open spaces - that rioting and urban guerrillas are near-impossible. Yet to this day the city is largely bereft of any real city life, with the populace choosing to flock to the ever-expanding former capital on the coast.
CaspianReport with the new report that Trump was considering an invasion of Venezuela last year, can you make a video updating us on the crisis in Venezuela and how other countries in the region might respond (such as Colombia with their new president) and their potential consequences.
T WE there's no benefits for usa by invading venuzuala!
Haruka Inoue *cough ... OIL!!! ... cough*
Trump maybe wanted to scare the Venezuelian government and appear "tough on dictatorship", but that didn't work and actually reinforced the Maduro's control.
There's also no benefits to forcing an unarmed populace to have to retake their capitol and no proper democratic process is guaranteed after the coup. It's hard to say which would be better - foreign intervention vs civilian coup but the USA is looking into it.
T WE Usa buys oil from Canada! Oil is not the reason always
Thailand always play both side.
During the Cold War, although Thailand remain a major ally with the West and especially the US upfront, there is a "secret diplomatic mission" between Thailand and China.
In the later year of the post-WW2 military dictatorship, two children (Wanwai ans Sirin) of PM Plaek's (Phibun) personal advisor and close friend, Sang Phathanothai, was sent to live with Premier Zhou Enlai.
"Phibun's government openly pro-western and anti-Chinese, Sang and Phibun devised a strategy to establish a backdoor informal communication channel with the Chinese government. They agreed to send two of Sang's children to be brought up under the auspices of Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai as his wards. A daughter aged eight and a son aged twelve secretly travelled through Burma to Beijing... Sang's daughter, Sirin Phathanothai, would later write a book, "The Dragon's Pearl," about her experiences growing up among China's elite." (from Wikipedia)
Today, Thailand have a similar strategy through the personal mission of Princess Sirindhorn, who regularly visit China (total of 20 official visits; she even studies at Beijing University at one point; and already visit all provinces of China). While Thailand business sector have relations with both the West and China
Well, I would say that we do everything to save our v*rginity like in ww2 japan would get us as a puppet if were joining axis side so we have ro cause japan wanna go deal with malayas and british raj in ww2
but they are already Thai.

People watching CaspianReport is about top 2% on CZcams as far as geopolitical knowledge goes. I love history and geopolitics and have read a lot of reports for fun for the last 20 years. CaspianReport have by far the most detailed, objective and realistic/sane/logical analysis on CZcams. Reminds me of RAND. Wendover Productions is good but sometimes got it wrong. The Infographics Show is poorly researched. VisualPolitik EN is pretty biased and the rest are often insane such as suggesting ISIS working with Iran, etc.
I agree, relatively speaking... Although it isn't without bias. At least he did some reading and research, can't say the same at all for all the others you mentioned.
This might be a bit off-topic for your channel, but could you make a tourism video for Azerbaijan? Maybe you could put it on the Patreon page?
Do a video on southern southeast asia please. Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei! Their geopolitics will be interesting!
Nah! you gotta be kidding me. Singapore is a sovereign nation. We try to be close to both USA and China but not let them affect our politics. This could be seen by allowing US aircraft carriers to dock in Singapore Changi Naval Base to serve as a counterweight to China. Singapore also share very close ties to Taiwan. And China is not very happy about it. In fact, a few years ago, China confiscated our tanks that were berthing in Hong Kong because it is coming back from a joint military exercise with Taiwan! KNOW YOUR SHIT BEFORE SAYING SINGAPORE IS UNDER CHINA INFLUENCE! WE ARE A SOVEREIGN NATION. WE ARE SMALL BUT WILL NOT KOWTOW TO BIGGER NATIONS! Years ago, we caned an American citizen. The president of USA use political pressure to urge us to not do so. BUT WE TOLD THEM WE ARE A SOVEREIGN NATION AND YOU CAN'T BULLY US!

You gotta hand it to the Vietnamese, they fought against France, US, China and Cambodia all within a century and won?!
ASEAN has so much potential! 50 Years, and so much progress have been made. I hope there will be more cooperation and understanding in this regional economy. May Asean strengthen their relationship between members. Unity in Diversity. "one vision, one identity, one community"
Thailand is awesome place, great place to live
From indian, best wishes to vietnam and burma.
Namaste brother
From chinese, best wishes to laos and cambodia.
@Ritesh Vizz and @pee chaichum What about Thailand ?
Do video on geopolitics of Pakistan please!!!! Love your videos keep it coming brother.
Are you able to share some of the sources you used for this video? thanks.
where did you get your source re cambodia and asean collective security policy? :)
An eye opener as usual but where did you get the estimates of Cambodia's GDP of $4,000? I can't seem to find those figures
here you are www.imf.org/external/datamapper/PPPPC@WEO/WEOWORLD/KHM/VNM
Yaqub Mahmoud it's in PPP terms
The Invincible thank you
PissMenn thanks I see it now
ppp
Amazing!! I'd LOVE it if you made a video on Pakistan's perspective... that would be an interesting video
how does a plateu protect the capital of Thailand. I understand mountains being protective, but a plateau? i am not see ing it
Chinese needs to stop bullying everyone with their fishing techniques
Do episode on Panama!
I notice you don't use language like 'client state', 'colonialism', 'foreign intervention' when speaking about African countries, where it is most apt.
CaspianReport and his white guilt.
I have a solution called not watching
Please, may somebody tell me what does he say on the 8.30 minute?? I hear something like "political fold lights..." maybe. Thanks!
Eddy Dim Sum “fault-line “
Oh, OK.. thanks!
A Relatively More Relevant, Informative And Well Narrated Shor Visual Report On The Indo China Sun Region's Geo Politics With A Brief Relevant Backdrop Of Its Turbulent History. Rather More Realistically Educative Also, In Its Nature And Content. Very Nice To Observe, With So Many Thanks To Share. May God Bless Us With Knowledge And Guidance, For Peace, Harmony, Security And Prosperity. With Thanks And Regards. SNR. (FFP). ...
Hi don't know why but bell icon is not working on this page for me.
caspianreport never disappoints. cool video to make would be the last decade in Europe: how the financial crisis and wave of immigration lead to the new rise of nationalism, alt right, Brexit etc. (doesn't have to be just Europe) But would be great to see the broader view of the whole situation and what lead to the change of public mood etc
Do a video on Northeast India??
"Threats within and without" - the without does not work here in this context. Better to say internal and external threats. Good video and analysis.
