  • The Grande Tour Episode 10.
    Day 5: 13th July 2023
    The FOURTH video from this day:
    Having travelled from Grand Junction (Episode 7), hopped over to Cimarron Canyon Rail Exhibit (Episode 8) and had a guided tour of Ridgway Railroad Museum (Episode 9), here I am arriving in the beautiful town of OURAY.
    Billed as "The Switzerland of America", this is town is surrounded by Alpine natural beauty and is filled with Victorian-American charm.
    I have a good look around the town and climb to Cascade Falls, a beautiful waterfall, where I get a stunning view across the town and the valley in which it is situated.
    (I do leave the footpath and walk a very dangerous-looking ledge. Do NOT follow my footsteps!)
    Of course, I was there as Ouray was a point on the historic Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad.
    If you'd like to support me after this very expensive trip and for the future, there is a "Super Thanks" function near the 'Like' button. Not expected, but would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
    This is part of my amazing SOLO historic railroad-based trip between Salt Lake City and Denver, filled with interest, fun and adventure.

      I've seen a few recent pictures posted by Ouray Brewery on Facebook. They've had to close (again!) a few days to save staff taking risks getting in. As beautiful as places like this are, I can imagine the challenges citizens face.

    I was watching this through my fingers… was 100% expecting a mountain rescue episode after seeing that path! 😮
    Such a lovely looking town. Classic old American buildings. Shame for you that the brewery was shut.
    Absolutely stunning scenery.

    Nice climb for some good exercise to build up an appetite. Some of those paths look tight. Waterfall, glad you did not try to climb through it.

      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Yeah the official path is narrow and slanted, so not actually much different from where I "accidentally" went.

    That's my kind of nature ramble, and yes, I've invented paths and trails as well, much to the distain of HM the Wife. I got stuck in a small place on Ohio once and the natives were amazingly friendly and helpful. Seems like you found the same.

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Making your own path has got to be done sometimes.
      That so nice of the natives you met! Yes, I met many really nice people along my way.
      Thanks! 👍

    If visiting go to the hot springs especially in the evening, we did with a full moon and snow on the mountain tops , very special.

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Před měsícem

      Ohh, the lady at my hotel said "Whaaat? You're not visiting the hot springs???"
      The thing is, every day I was on a tight schedule. I'd typically get to my hotel, freshen up, get out to dinner, back to hotel and backup footage from the day, sleep. Then next morning, up, breakfast, and off on the next day's mission.
      So sadly, I just didn't have time. I wanted to do the walk up Cascade Falls, and that's all I had time for.
      So I'll have to say...... Next time 🤞

    Simon,
    I spent a few years in CO.
    Cascade Falls, that's a "scramble" at 8500 to almost 9/10 k feet in elevation . Props my modest man .

    One of the nearby places I watch trains has a piles of old spikes laying around near the tracks. Perhaps I should make some coat racks! Is this the trail that upset your mom? Great video Simon. 😊

      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Oh yeah, any spare spikes will make nice feature items.
      Yep, I put a little bit of this on Facebook on the day and she was horrified 🤣 This full version looks so much worse 🙈

    Fun fact: the Million Dollar Highway is absolutely gorgeous to drive along, but it is unknown whether "Million Dollar" refers to the value of the scenery, the cost to build the road, the amount of life insurance you should have if you try to drive it, or the amount of fine that should have been leveled against Otto Mears for thinking it was a good idea to put a road there!

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Před měsícem +1

      Hmmm... yes. I've heard that's how much it cost to build per mile, but yes there are a number of ideas.
      As nice as it may be, I wasn't going to pay a million dollars to drive it 😂

  • @hallkbrdz
    @hallkbrdz Před 4 měsíci +2

    As a Colorado native we always pronounced it You-Ray, fun to see what others do. Though it's not near as confusing to pronounce as Saguache (Suh-Watch) in the San Luis Valley. That one always tripped up new weathermen.
    Did you go up the tight canyon path between the rocks?

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Oh interesting! I've mostly heard it pronounced closer to "Ooh-ray", but near the time I was there I heard a few say "You-ray", so that what I mostly said when I was there, (see episode 7 when it's my destination from Grand Junction) and then afterwards I'm back saying "Ooh-ray". So you get both with me 😂
      I would never have guessed that pronunciation for "Saguache".
      Another one is "Raton". I have a model locomotive with the name, and I'd never have thought of how people actually pronounce it. I have a video on that 🤣
      I was on a tight schedule so I didn't manage to looked down the canyon, sadly. I'll have to visit again!
      Thanks for you comment!

    • @hallkbrdz
      @hallkbrdz Před 4 měsíci

      @@ThatBIGTRAINGuyRaton would be Ruh-Tone. Or at least that's the way we pronounced it in the SLV.

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@hallkbrdz Yeah I'd have never guessed that, with it having no "e" on the end. "Rah-tun" was my main guess, but oh well. Haha!
