    He must have had the same textbook as me for German at school- Deutsches Leben. There was indeed a chapter- Jakob die Rabe- about Jakob the raven. Good old Jakob- ravens like the smaller version- the crow are just a barrel of laughs- it's their job.

    He's kept a stronger Scouce accent in German than in English, I think. That sentence is preserved from his school days!

    When we were at school, some of us went on an exchange trip to Germany. Monty Python were really big so we ended up learning the German for things like "My hovercraft is full of eels" (mein Luftkissenboot is voller Aale). Nowadays I live in Germany but haven't been in many situations where the phrase has been useful :-)

      Drenwickification This comment is so old, but by the odd chance that you’re still interested, the first word of his sentence is Jacob. However, since the German language is a phonetic language and follows strict phonetic rules, it would sound as if he were saying “Yacub” in English.

    I as a German actually didn't understand it because he said a word incorrectly. When he was explaining and telling us the English translation I immediately got it though.

    I got to choose whether I studied French or German at my school (in England) and what persuaded me to do German was the Beatles going to Hamburg, I want to be able to visit all the Beatles tours there. and I'm glad I did because I'm doing really well in German lessons at the moment.

      They got their first gigs in the clubs in Hamburg. Hamburg is in German. Now why would you think the British would be compelled to learn the language of the enemy they helped anguish? Does that make ANY sense?

    I think I remember reading that it was George who translated ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’ and ‘She Loves You’ into German ? 🤔

      It was "Camilo Felgen", who helped them translate "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" into german versions.

      :-) he often mentions it when he is doin gigs in Germany. Last time, 2016, in Düsseldorf, he mentioned "Jakob der Rabe...." again, and wondered, what unuseful things one learns at school....

      Languages often feature foreign sounds--sounds that one is not use to making. German has notoriously robust vowels. My mouth hurt the first time I learned it.

      Sure. If one thinks that all you need to do is replace words of one language into another. Translation won't help if you're dealing with an idiomatic expression, a use of preposition that doesn't make sense to you.
