    These crossings cross public roads, depending on the size of the convoy, would depend on the level of control. Smaller convoys will cross when safe to do so, larger convoys with slower moving vehicles such as tracked vehicles may have a military police control at the crossing. Night crossings definitely controlled with more caution.

    In the mid-80s, I served at a garrison, covering all of Salisbury Plain and this sort of movement (at night), across a public road, was pretty straightforward for me: stop before the crossing, headlights - off, hazards & blue light - on and let the armour cross; any "Muppet" who disregarded this (if they survived) had their insurance company to contend with; only had 1 incident with an owner of a Renault - what a flopper!

      I remember an incident the other side of Westdown Camp, north of Tilshead - when the 14th/20th were crossing the A360. A woman was doing 80+ down the road from Devizes in a Sierra - and suddenly found herself in the back seat, under the engine. The Chieftain hardly felt the bump - I went past as Wilts FB were cutting the car apart, to get her out. This was somewhere around 1984 or 5..

    • @markwright3161
      @markwright3161 Před rokem

      On the other hand parked too far apart leaves every single vehicle a target undefended. Parked together they can defend as one. Not every vehicle with have a small quantity of everything they need, a couple might be mainly long distance communication equipment, another equipped for traversing rough terrain (thinking of the mobile bridge vehicles), one here is carrying a telehandler. That obviously can't be shrunk down to a mass produced item for every vehicle to carry, and it's weight obviously means it can't also carry the same quantity of munitions, etc to defend it as a lone vehicle. If that telehandler was some other form of equipment being transferred between bases or somewhere, be it military equipment you don't want falling into the opposition's hands, aid, or whatever, the surrounding vehicles need to be close to it to defend it, and if an attack takes out the right couple of vehicles in a space out formation, the whole convoy is stuffed anyway, so parked as one offers the best defense.
      Of course, you need to remember that in a combat situation, or other situation where there's deemed to be a high risk of attack, they'll either not stop moving or be in a covered area, camp, etc. They won't be parking casually in the middle of open ground. The green cross code is very low on priorities in that situation, so any road they need to cross will be done without stopping, although it could be scouted by drone or similar before any vehicles reach it to determine risk, etc. There isn't much risk of hitting a roadside bomb when stationary, so the spacing is only really a concern when in motion, and even that's dependent on the information they have. If static hidden threats are the risk, like roadside bombs, etc, then spacing out with the most heavily armoured vehicles leading is a way to go, but protecting something or someone they're transporting will require a close formation to prevent the 'cargo' being isolated at any time. If they're stranded in the open because a main vehicle have been immobilised, then a close formation is again the easiest to defend. If you're 1 metre from your next set of eyes you're a lot better off than if you are 10 metres away from them.

    Follow Jesus Christ today
    John 3:16-21
    16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
    Mark 1.15
    15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
    2 Peter 3:9
    The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
    Hebrews 11:6
    6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
